A question about copyrights

Hi Doniago.
I know next to nothing about copyrights, including how the issue applies to Wikipedia.  I would like to know at least the minimum I would need to know in order to quote a few sentences from a copyrighted book.  Would the following be sufficient?

  • Identify the name of the book and its author right in the article immediately before or immediately after quoting the material      and
  • Include a standard type reference identifying the title and author of the book, as well as the page number(s) ?

For example:

There are many ways in which a book may be organized.  As John Smith points out in A Book about Books, "A book may be about one topic or it may be about more than one topic.  A book about one topic may have that topic subdivided into two or more sub topics.  Likewise a book about multiple topics may have one or more of its main topics subdivided into two or more subtopics."[1]

I realize that this is not the best style, but would it at least keep me out of copyright violation trouble?  If not, what would be the minimum necessary?  Thank you for your help.

You're really asking the wrong person about this. The best guideline I could suggest is WP:COMPLIC. Cheers. DonIago (talk) 14:02, 2 December 2015 (UTC)

Hi Doniago.  Thank you for the linked reference.  I read it and it did help me, although probably not in the way you intended.  I know that "WP:COMPLIC" stands for "WP:Compatible license(d)," but I think it should stand for WP:COMPLICATED!!  I read the material and realized that the issue of copyrights, as it applies to Wikipedia, is a lot more complicated than I'd expected. And I've decided that the most applicable part for me is "If in doubt, assume you cannot use it."  I hope that, eventually, I'll have enough understanding of copyright issues to be able to properly make appropriate use of copyrighted material in Wikipedia articles in a safe and legal way.  But for now I think I better just avoid the issue altogether.  But thank you anyway for helping me realize I'm not yet ready for that particular aspect of Wikipedia.

Verifiable Edits

Hey I haven't been on the editing end of Wikipedia for a while and I found your message on my page. I went through and found all the verified data for the Dharma Initiative page and added the citations it needed. All the info was out there but I just needed to include it in my edit. Thanks for the tip! SuperAnth (talk) 16:01, 11 December 2015 (UTC)

You're welcome! Glad I could help! DonIago (talk) 16:22, 11 December 2015 (UTC)

Thriller (Michael Jackson album)

I don't feel confident about editing a featured article. I'd appreciate someone looking at this.— Vchimpanzee • talk • contributions • 19:40, 16 December 2015 (UTC)

I think recent edits by a different editor have addressed this; if not, may I recommend asking at the article's Talk page? DonIago (talk) 20:01, 16 December 2015 (UTC)

From Here to Eternity

Hi Doniago, I got your message about original research. No worries, I have sources and will put it back later with the appropriate cites. Cheers, TheBlinkster (talk) 14:53, 18 December 2015 (UTC)

Thanks! DonIago (talk) 15:45, 18 December 2015 (UTC)

Amazon Women in the Mood

Please note that, per WP:RS/IMDb, IMDb is not considered a reliable source and should not be used in citations. Thanks! DonIago (talk) 14:16, 18 December 2015 (UTC)

  • That's fine. I sort of assumed as much but didn't realize the specific rule. I just think that fact should be included in the article somewhere and, for whatever reason, I couldn't find a better citation. Skudrafan1 (talk) 22:10, 18 December 2015 (UTC)

PATH Rolling Stock

The edit I made to PATH (rail system) which you have deleted was NOT new information. The edit was simply a rewording and a relocation of existing CITED text. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.44.106.191 (talk) 17:09, 24 December 2015 (UTC)

Especially as you left no edit summary when making your change, I think it's understandable that that was unclear; you're welcome to re-add the information with an appropriate summary, though I don't think including a supporting citation would be a bad idea.
