Conflict of interest in Wikipedia edit

Hi Dolcevikasf. I work on conflict of interest issues here in Wikipedia, along with my regular editing, which is mostly about health and medicine. Your edits to date are all about Twist and are promotional. I'm giving you notice of our Conflict of Interest guideline and Terms of Use, and will have some comments and requests for you below.

  Hello, Dolcevikasf. We welcome your contributions, but if you have an external relationship with the people, places or things you have written about on Wikipedia, you may have a conflict of interest (COI). Editors with a COI may be unduly influenced by their connection to the topic. Editing for the purpose of advertising or promotion is not permitted. See the conflict of interest guideline and FAQ for organizations for more information. We ask that you:

  • avoid editing or creating articles about yourself, your family, friends, company, organization or competitors;
  • propose changes on the talk pages of affected articles (see the {{request edit}} template);

Comments and requests edit

Wikipedia is a widely-used reference work and managing conflict of interest is essential for ensuring the integrity of Wikipedia and retaining the public's trust in it. As in academia, COI is managed here in two steps - disclosure and a form of peer review. Please note that there is no bar to being part of the Wikipedia community if you want to be involved in articles where you have a conflict of interest; there are just some things we ask you to do (and if you are paid, some things you need to do).

Disclosure is the most important, and first, step. While I am not asking you to disclose your identity (anonymity is strictly protecting by our WP:OUTING policy) would you please disclose if you have some connection with Twist, directly or through a third party (e.g. a PR agency or the like)? You can answer how ever you wish (giving personally identifying information or not), but if there is a connection, please disclose it. After you respond (and you can just reply below), I can walk you through how the "peer review" part happens and then, if you like, I can provide you with some more general orientation as to how this place works. Hi Jytdog my name is Vika and I am trying to edit the accuracy of the article that was posted about the company i work for (Twist Bioscience is my current employer) I am disclosing that I am linking within Wikipedia and also to factual external sources (crunchbase). I am also contributing to other medical science and pharma areas of wikipedia, mostly within the domain of hte companies I previously worked for (medivation, pfizer and genentech). Please let me know if I am doing something incorrectly, thank you.

Thanks for replying! Quick note on the logistics of discussing things on Talk pages, which are essential for everything that happens here. In Talk page discussions, we "thread" comments by indenting - when you reply to someone, you put a colon in front of your comment, which the Wikipedia software will render into an indent when you save your edit; if the other person has indented once, then you indent twice by putting two colons in front of your comment, which the WP software converts into two indents, and when that gets ridiculous you reset back to the margin (or "outdent") by putting this {{od}} in front of your comment. This also allows you to make it clear if you are also responding to something that someone else responded to if there are more than two people in the discussion; in that case you would indent the same amount as the person just above you in the thread. I hope that all makes sense. And at the end of the comment, please "sign" by typing exactly four (not 3 or 5) tildas "~~~~" which the WP software converts into a date stamp and links to your talk and user pages when you save your edit. That is how we know who said what. I know this is insanely archaic and unwieldy, but this is the software environment we have to work on. Sorry about that. Will reply on the substance in a second... Thanks for your patience, and sorry for the delay. OK, so in Wikipedia you are a "paid editor" with respect to Twist. You also have a conflict of interest. Under the WP:PAID policy of Wikipedia, you were obligated to disclose that, and I appreciate you doing so.

To finish the disclosure piece, would you please add the disclosure to your user page (which is User:Dolcevikasf - a red link, because you haven't written anything there yet). Just something simple like: "I work for Twist Bioscience, managing digital platforms for them; part of my job is making people aware of Twist. I have a conflict of interest with regard to that company and related topics" would be fine. If you want to add anything else there that is relevant to what you want to do in WP feel free to add it, but please don't add anything promotional about the company or yourself (see WP:USERPAGE for guidance if you like).

I added a tag at Talk:Twist Bioscience, so the disclosure is done there -- we ask people with a conflict of interest to disclose both on their userpage, and at the talk pages of articles they work on. Once you disclose on your user page, the disclosure piece of this will be done.

As I noted above, there are two pieces to COI management in WP. The first is disclosure. The second is a form of review, similar to the way papers are reviewed before they publish. This piece may seem a bit strange to you at first, but if you think about it, it will make sense. In Wikipedia, editors can immediately publish their work, with no intervening publisher or standard peer review -- you can just create an article, click save, and voilà there is a new article, and you can go into any article, make changes, click save, and done. No intermediary - no publisher, no "editors" as that term is used in the real world. So the bias that conflicted editors tend to have, can go right into the article. Conflicted editors are also really driven to try to make the article fit with their external interest. If they edit directly, this often leads to big battles with other editors.

What we ask of editors who have a COI or who are paid, and want to work on articles where their COI is relevant, is:

a) if you want to create an article relevant to a COI you have, create the article as a draft through the WP:AFC process, disclose your COI on the Talk page with the Template:Connected contributor (paid) tag, and then submit the draft article for review (the AfC process sets up a nice big button for you to click when it is ready) so it can be reviewed before it publishes; and
b) And if you want to change content in any existing article on a topic where you have a COI, we ask you to
(i) disclose at the Talk page of the article with the Template:Connected contributor (paid) tag, putting it at the bottom of the beige box at the top of the page; and
(ii) propose content on the Talk page for others to review and implement before it goes live, instead of doing it directly yourself. Just open a new section, put the proposed content there, and just below the header (at the top of the editing window) please the {{request edit}} tag to flag it for other editors to review. In general it should be relatively short so that it is not too much review at once. Sometimes editors propose complete rewrites, providing a link to their sandbox for example. This is OK to do but please be aware that it is lot more for volunteers to process and will probably take longer.

By following those "peer review" processes, editors with a COI can contribute where they have a COI, and the integrity of WP can be protected. We get some great contributions that way, when conflicted editors take the time to understand what kinds of proposals are OK under the content policies. (There are good faith paid editors here, who have signed and follow the Wikipedia:Statement on Wikipedia from participating communications firms, and there are "black hat" paid editors here who lie about what they do and really harm Wikipedia).

But understanding the mission, and the policies and guidelines through which we realize the mission, is very important! There are a whole slew of policies and guidelines that govern content and behavior here in Wikipedia. Please see User:Jytdog/How for an overview of what Wikipedia is and is not (we are not a directory or a place to promote anything), and for an overview of the content and behavior policies and guidelines. Learning and following these is very important, and takes time. Please be aware that you have created a Wikipedia account, and this makes you a Wikipedian - you are obligated to pursue Wikipedia's mission first and foremost when you work here, and you are obligated to edit according to the policies and guidelines. Editing Wikipedia is a privilege that is freely offered to all, but the community restricts or completely takes that privilege away from people who will not edit and behave as Wikipedians.

Thanks so much for a detailed explanation! I agree and will follow the direction to do the disclosure as well as peer review change process. I can do so tomorrow from desktop, mobile is a bit hard to manage. I also have a few questions re minor edits (for example, I edited the list of products only by adding links to corresponding Wikipedia articles). Thanks for your reply and for being willing to work through this stuff. As I am sure you know, the Twist article was created by Julie Saeger Nierenberg whom Twist paid to write it. Julie was unaware of the stuff above, and directly created the article - she did not put it through WP:AFC like she should have. (A mistake - she just didn't know what she was supposed to do). I had started to have the same conversation with her, that I am having with you, but she stopped replying, so I was unable to finish the conversation.
When working on these COI matters, I generally work through the whole conversation with someone before I turn to work on the actual article. Things generally just go more smoothly when people understand what is going on, and why. So.. I haven't really addressed the Twist article yet and nobody has worked on it yet either - it remains an unreviewed piece of Twist's marketing in Wikipedia.
Since you are here now, I will go ahead and work it over. It will probably end up looking pretty different than it does now.
But yes, when you want to see any changes, please propose them on the article Talk page.
Please make sure that those changes are aimed at Wikipedia's mission -- to provide the public with accepted knowledge -- and that they comply with the policies and guidelines. Also, I agree abut Julie, she posted the initial article but I can respond on her and my behalf, it is easier for you to work with one person. The objective for the article is to be unbiased and non promotional. I use wikipedia myself quite a bit (for research) and want to be sure it continues to stay a factual and unbiased source of information. Please edit as you see and I will propose changes (only internal linking to relevant scientific articles such as NGS, CRISPR etc) once you are done. Let me know if this completes COI process. i am trying to hyperlink the website in the main company box. Every single company has it hyperlinked. I don’t know where that link went and why you are warning me about “spamming”. I have read the guidance and am not displaying negligence. Here is what I abide by:

What was not clear is that it applies not just to content but to everything I.e. even if I see a typo, I cannot edit. I have to request it. Finally, I saw your "to avoid scrutiny" comment - what is that in reference to? The page was created following Wikipedia guidelines on Companies. Plus, all the clinical trial information that you removed in quite a disservice for people who actually try to find this info since clinicaltrials.gov is a vast mess, narrowing this to which ones are in what area provides facts that are helpful. It is common as dirt for bad-faith, scrutiny-evading paid editors to create an article under one name, have it speedy deleted for violating one or more policies, and then re-create it under a variant of the name. You created this as Verastem, it was speedy deleted, and you re-created it under Verastem Oncology.

I dit NOT was the article to be "speedily deleted" and in fact it was deleted for the wrong reasons. I seriously question all the conflicting info I am getting from wiki editors. At this point, Verastem is referenced all over the place, the article you have in draft has all the facts including negatives about failed studies, and NO color from corp lingo, you also have trial info from the government FDA source. This is my last reply. You have not come even close to "following the rules" - I explained above that you should put new pages through AfC and suggest changes on the relevant talk page. Your contribs, and those of the IP you have used, show that you have been completely ignoring that.
The COI management process is not complicated and is clearly explained above and in the relevant policy/guideline documents that have been linked above. You have to care enough about your reputation - and that of your employer -- to try to follow that process.

Hey, it's been a year, and I've been editing biotech pages here and there with no issues. it is only when I try to get a new page, so you can think whatever you want but there is no BS. @jytdog In regards to "no pipeline" please takke a look at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Juno_Therapeutics and many more. Pipeline is one of the standard sections. Are there rules around that? I've edited multiple pipeline sections for the companies I never worked for to make them accurate and provide sources. Should I not do that?

  Hi, and thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. It appears that you tried to give Draft:Verastem Oncology a different title by copying its content and pasting either the same content, or an edited version of it, into Verastem Oncology. This is known as a "cut-and-paste move", and it is undesirable because it splits the page history, which is legally required for attribution. Instead, the software used by Wikipedia has a feature that allows pages to be moved to a new title together with their edit history.

In most cases, once your account is four days old and has ten edits, you should be able to move an article yourself using the "Move" tab at the top of the page (the tab may be hidden in a dropdown menu for you). This both preserves the page history intact and automatically creates a redirect from the old title to the new. If you cannot perform a particular page move yourself this way (e.g. because a page already exists at the target title), please follow the instructions at requested moves to have it moved by someone else. Also, if there are any other pages that you moved by copying and pasting, even if it was a long time ago, please list them at Wikipedia:Requests for history merge. Thank you.
