Oxford Wikimania 2010 and Wikimedia UK v2.0 Notice edit

Hi,

As a regularly contributing UK Wikipedian, we were wondering if you wanted to contribute to the Oxford bid to host the 2010 Wikimania conference. Please see here for details of how to get involved, we need all the help we can get if we are to put in a compelling bid.

We are also in the process of forming a new UK Wikimedia chapter to replace the soon to be folded old one. If you are interested in helping shape our plans, showing your support or becoming a future member or board member, please head over to the Wikimedia UK v2.0 page and let us know. We plan on holding an election in the next month to find the initial board, who will oversee the process of founding the company and accepting membership applications. They will then call an AGM to formally elect a new board who after obtaining charitable status will start the fund raising, promotion and active support for the UK Wikimedian community for which the chapter is being founded.

You may also wish to attend the next London meet-up at which both of these issues will be discussed. If you can't attend this meetup, you may want to watch Wikipedia:Meetup, for updates on future meets.

We look forward to hearing from you soon, and we send our apologies for this automated intrusion onto your talk page!

House of Bishops edit

I am just wondering, how is this not encyclopedic? Would a listing of past meetings be appropriate? Bearian (talk) 16:53, 13 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

In two or three ways, I would suggest: (1) it said "The next meeting ... is taking place March 13-18, 2009" - given that it was written on 11 March, it was almost immediately going to become out of date. (2) Ref WP:NOTCRYSTAL, "All articles about anticipated events must be verifiable, and the subject matter must be of sufficiently wide interest that it would merit an article if the event had already occurred" - would the meeting be notable in its own right? (3) The article was about Houses of Bishops in general. It might be more relevant in an article about the American House of Bishops (ie in General Convention of the Episcopal Church in the United States of America), in the same way that the aricle on the General Synod of the Anglican Church of Canada includes both past venues and the date of the next one. Thanks re Frome & ? other Somerset potential GAs edit

Thanks for your edits to Frome, Somerset & related pages. They have improved the articles (& dealt with some of my poor prose). Would you be interested in looking at Midsomer Norton which has also been nominated for GA? Are there any of the others described at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Somerset#? Blues and twos content edit

There is really too much to be able to fit it in the Emergency vehicle lighting article - plus the content from Blues and twos relates to sirens as well. Can I suggest that you try to work some of your excellent additions to the explanations in Emergency_vehicle_lighting#United_Kingdom into Blues and twos? I would do it myself but seeing as you put the work into it I don't want to go and mess up the structure. ninety:one (reply on my talk) 17:47, 5 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

You're quite right, but the detail that's needed to go into an adequate explanation justifies it being in a separate article - maybe move Blues and twos to Emergency vehicle equipment in the United Kingdom? Then it could include the equipment carried as well, which would pad it out a bit. Possibly even Emergency vehicles in the United Kingdom? Either way, Emergency_vehicle_lighting#United_Kingdom could be reduced to a summary, with a {{main}} link to wherever the content is. ninety:one (reply on my talk) 18:15, 5 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

Somerset heritage at risk & cats edit

Hi, Looks like you are doing some good work on heritage/listed buildings at risk particularly Mendip - Thanks. Just a quick thought: you have added the cats Category:Grade II listed buildings in Somerset, Category:Listed buildings at risk in Somerset etc to village articles eg Holcombe, Somerset & Witham Friary. I have been advised in the past not to add building specific cats to village articles & only add them when the article is about the specific building. What do you think?— Rod talk 14:42, 21 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

Hi Rod. I wasn't sure about that. I noticed that Orchardleigh Estate had Grade II and Grade II* categories attached, although in fact the article covers several buildings (incl a Grade I church), so I sort-of assumed that it was Ok by extension. The difficulty (especially for the Grade IIs and the neglected buildings, such as those on at-risk registers) is whether the buildings are sufficiently notable in their own right to justify a whole new page. I think you've been creating new articles for lots of churches and other things, so would you recommend creating new pages for these buildings? Thanks. DavidWard talk 17:18, 21 March 2011 (UTC)Reply
Hi David, The accepted norm seems to be Grade I & Grade II* are inherently notable and worth their own article. Grade IIs are if there are enough reliable sources to write a decent article & each is judged on its won merits. Most of the churches I've done have been I or II* with others in the care of the Churches Conservation Trust which tend to have reports about them which can be used as sources. If you need any help let me know.— Rod talk 18:08, 21 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

Proposed deletion of Michael Pitt (local government officer) edit

The article Michael Pitt (local government officer) has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Lacks notability, as indicated by single reference the supports none of the substantive content of the article

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Europe 10,000 Challenge invite edit

Hi. The Wikipedia:WikiProject Europe/The 10,000 Challenge has recently started, based on the UK/Ireland Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge. The idea is not to record every minor edit, but to create a momentum to motivate editors to produce good content improvements and creations and inspire people to work on more countries than they might otherwise work on. There's also the possibility of establishing smaller country or regional challenges for places like Germany, Italy, the Benelux countries, Iberian Peninsula, Romania, Slovenia etc, much like Wikipedia:The 1000 Challenge (Nordic). For this to really work we need diversity and exciting content and editors from a broad range of countries regularly contributing. If you would like to see masses of articles being improved for Europe and your specialist country like Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The Africa Destubathon, sign up today and once the challenge starts a contest can be organized. This is a way we can target every country of Europe, and steadily vastly improve the encyclopedia. We need numbers to make this work so consider signing up as a participant and also sign under any country sub challenge on the page that you might contribute to! Thank you. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 05:47, 6 November 2016 (UTC)Reply
