File copyright problem with File:Rhodes University.jpg edit

Thank you for uploading File:Rhodes University.jpg. However, it currently is missing information on its copyright status. Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously. It may be deleted soon, unless we can determine the license and the source of the file. If you know this information, then you can add a copyright tag to the image description page.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their license and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thanks again for your cooperation. ww2censor (talk) 03:10, 3 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Did you know you can just type ~~~~ instead of manually entering your name and the date? It's much quicker and links to your user and talk pages will be automatically added. --Schuhpuppe (talk) 21:36, 18 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the advice, I know now. I am sorry; I am new to Wikipedia and its mark-up language. For some reason though there is no hyperlink to my userpage or is that simply because Wikipedia blocks the hyperlink so that only I do not see it? --DiscipleOfKnowledge 23:51, 18 June 2010 (UTC)

License tagging for File:Carte Blanche (TV series) logo from 2010.jpg edit

Thanks for uploading File:Carte Blanche (TV series) logo from 2010.jpg. You don't seem to have indicated the license status of the image. Wikipedia uses a set of image copyright tags to indicate this information; to add a tag to the image, select the appropriate tag from this list, click on this link, then click "Edit this page" and add the tag to the image's description. If there doesn't seem to be a suitable tag, the image is probably not appropriate for use on Wikipedia.

For help in choosing the correct tag, or for any other questions, leave a message on Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. Thank you for your cooperation. --ImageTaggingBot (talk) 17:05, 3 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

Proposed deletion of Saleem Badat edit

The article Saleem Badat has been proposed for deletion because under Wikipedia policy, all biographies of living persons created after March 18, 2010, must have at least one source that directly supports material in the article.

If you created the article, please don't take offense. Instead, consider improving the article. For help on inserting references, see Wikipedia:Referencing for beginners or ask at Wikipedia:Help desk. Once you have provided at least one reliable source, you may remove the {{prod blp}} tag. Please do not remove the tag unless the article is sourced. If you cannot provide such a source within ten days, the article may be deleted, but you can request that it be undeleted when you are ready to add one. Hi D.O.K,

I have tried to do some justice to that story, but as I live in the US all I have is internet sources. Could you have a look (supposing you can decipher my strange tongue)? Shouldn't there be a page on this topic on the en.wiki too?

Speedy deletion nomination of Luma Arcade edit

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Luma Arcade requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about an organization or company, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hang on}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion, or "db", tag; if no such tag exists, then the page is no longer a speedy delete candidate and adding a hang-on tag is unnecessary), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, you can contact one of these administrators to request that the administrator userfy the page or email a copy to you. Cntras (talk) 11:09, 16 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

Hello. In case you didn't know, when you add content to talk pages and Wikipedia pages that have open discussion, you should sign your posts by typing four halfwidth tildes ( ~~~~ ) at the end of your comment. You could also click on the signature button   located above the edit window. This will automatically insert a signature with your username or IP address and the time you posted the comment. I see your userpage indicates that are a Rhodian. I wonder if you might be willing to help out with a query that has come up at Wikipedia:WikiProject_Resource_Exchange/Resource_Request#An Occasional Paper? It seems to be for a rather rare work that originated at what now is the SAIAB, though I have my doubts about some of the cataloguing details. Would you be willing to do a bit of digging to see if it still exists there? It would help clear up the last remaining request from 2009. Cheers, LeadSongDog come howl! 21:27, 2 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

I did a search and think I might have found what your are looking for. Speedy deletion nomination of Afawfw3fweg edit

A tag has been placed on Afawfw3fweg, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a redirect to an article talk page, file description page, file talk page, MediaWiki page, MediaWiki talk page, category talk page, portal talk page, template talk page, help talk, user page, user talk or special page from the main/article space.

If you can fix the redirect to point to a mainspace page, please do so and remove the speedy deletion tag. However, please do not remove the speedy deletion tag unless you are fixing the redirect. If you think the redirect should be retained as is for some reason, contest the deletion by clicking on the button that looks like this:   which appears inside of the speedy deletion ({{db-...}}) tag (if no such tag exists, the page is no longer a speedy delete candidate). Doing so will take you to the talk page where you will find a pre-formatted place for you to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. You can also visit the the article's talk page directly to give your reasons. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this. --Djc wi (talk) 04:03, 21 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

Jobs created during South African presidential terms edit

Noticed that you are working on an article on "Jobs created during South African presidential terms." Just wanted to say that as an economist that whilst it relatively easy to tabulate the actual numbers created it is a very tricky thing working out how many of those jobs government created. However I am sure you know that already. Anyway, on that note I thought you might be interested in a show that National Public Broadcast Radio in the US did on that subject very recently. It well done and I think a must listen to for any one interested in the subject. You can listen to the show here: http://www.thisamericanlife.org/play_full.php?play=435&podcast=1 --Discott (talk) 21:22, 21 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

Very interesting! I think you are quite right, quantifying the jobs that the government has created is difficult because perhaps we can only calculate this in terms of how they facilitate job creation, so maybe creating a tax-free zone stimulates start-up growth and in turn job creation, for example. Ahh, but I am just a pseudo-economist, what do I know? This is probably not the place but I must say that I have grave concerns for our political economy and our long-term prosperity as an emerging market. I was reading this article [1] and I must say that I was pretty disconcerted. Personally, I blame the goverment's uncompetitive economic policies. What do you think? --User:DiscipleOfKnowledge (talk) 16:16, 22 May 2011 (UTC)Reply
Sorry for not getting back to you sooner. The writer of the article you reconmened is right about SA being at an economic crossroads. I must admit that I am not that optimistic about us finding the right rout, largly because of politcal reasons. Although I am reluctant to blaim the ANC for our relative lack of economic performance (as some thing like the economy is some thing so much bigger than any political group or the government in a country but is rather a group effort by everyone) it is hard not to land at lease some of the blame at the door step of a political organisation that has been in a position of such hegimonic polical control for so long as the ANC in South Africa. But on the other hand we do have a curious mix of political interests (across SA's political spectrum) that the ANC is only a part of that has also created this and in many ways the ANC has done a relatively good job trying to get as many of them to get along as possible. Is there more the ANC could do... yes. Is there more that everyone else could do... yes. Is it the case that relative to SA's wealth and the eduction of unskilled workers that they are paid at a rate that hurts the copetivivness of SA's economy... yes. Is it the case that we are a highly and unsustanably unequal society... yes. Is it nessersery for everyone to work together and compramise to make it happen... yes. As they say in public policy: policy must be good politics before it can become good policy. The problem we have is that we have yet to find an effective economic policy that would also be good politics... but then again that is the story of many countries. Either way, this is a very complicated issue with no easy answers. However there is much we can learn from countries like Barbados, Brazil, Scandinavian countries and yes even China. --Discott (talk) 14:42, 6 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

You've already done a bunch. No reason not to go for FA. I would go in stages. Get the thing to GA first. TCO (talk) 21:52, 20 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

Yes! It may take a while but eventually it will get there. I think A class would be the first stage but perhaps we could even skip this stage and get a peer review for it when we are happy with it. You may want to look at some of the existing featured articles in biology to get some idea of what a FA article should look like. There are a lot of fungi that are featured, or maybe I am looking at the wrong section. Nevertheless, they provide good examples. --User:DiscipleOfKnowledge (talk) 22:04, 20 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

I have taken a bio article featured, painted turtle. There are definitely people who know more...but I have a good feel for what is involved. The issues are much more FA versus non-FA, than animal versus plant.

Whatever you want to do to get traction makes sense. But I seriously advise you that "content is king". WE (you) need to get the references and read them and put more "meat on the bone". After that, I undertand well how to work on format, prose, even organization. But we need the material first. Article needs more detail and length.TCO (talk) 22:09, 20 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

Can do. The next few days I are going to get real busy. But after that I will have several weeks to devote my attention to this article. I have many books at home and will do a thorough perusal and will include what I find. Cheers for now! --User:DiscipleOfKnowledge (talk) 22:14, 20 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

Dichapetalum cymosum edit

I see you have decided to help get Dichapetalum cymosum to GA or FA. The Internet Archive (http://www.archive.org/) is a good source of online books on just about any subject. Easily searched by google with something like "Gifblaar site:archive.org"[2] or "Dichapetalum cymosum site:archive.org"[3]

When you follow the link from google, click on See other formats and select Read online or the PDF

Here are some quick links to specific pages in books that mentions gifblaar or Dichapetalum cymosum:

  • Report of the Committee Appointed to Inquire into and Report upon the Fluoridation of Municipal Water Supplies. 1961. p. 28.
  • Alexander, Jerome (1948). Life, its nature and origin. New York, Reinhold Pub. Corp.
  • Schwimmer, Morton; Schwimmer, David (1955). The role of algae and plankton in medicine. New York, Grune & Stratton.{{cite book}}: CS1 maint: multiple names: authors list (link)
  • Marloth, Rudolf (1917). Dictionary of the common names of plants with list of foreign plants cultivated in the open. p. 30.

Try the searches, you will find many more. --NJR_ZA (talk) 22:19, 20 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

I see this thing gathering steam. Have a good feeling! TCO (talk) 22:22, 20 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

Non-free rationale for File:Mybroadband screenshot.png edit

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:Mybroadband screenshot.png. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under non-free content criteria, but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia is acceptable. Please go to the file description page, and edit it to include a non-free rationale.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified the non-free rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. It's actually worse than that. The license terms of it are not acceptable (not just "not a tag that the bot could parse"). They do not allow certain uses of the image that wikipedia policy requires be permitted, so the file got deleted per WP:CSD#F3. DMacks (talk) 05:25, 3 October 2011 (UTC)Reply
I don't understand. That was a [CC licensed image http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/3.0/]. How is this policy prohibiting its inclusion? --User:DiscipleOfKnowledge (talk) 06:34, 3 October 2011 (UTC)Reply
It is "non-commercial only" and "no derivative works". Each of those makes the image fail Wikipedia:Image use policy (especially the [[Copyright and licensing section). There is also an explicit statement about these two particular requirements in the image-uploading screen. DMacks (talk) 06:42, 3 October 2011 (UTC)Reply
Now that is unfortunate. I guess Jimbo and his crew know better. Thanks for explaining this to me. --User:DiscipleOfKnowledge (talk) 06:46, 3 October 2011 (UTC)Reply
You're welcome. It was quite contentious when the policy was written, and indeed definitely a more restrictive definition of "free to use" than many are used to dealing with on other websites. DMacks (talk) 06:49, 3 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

Responding to RFCs

Remember that RFCs are part of Dispute Resolution and at times may take place in a heated environment. Please take a look at the relevant RFC page before responding and be sure that you are willing and able to enter that environment and contribute to making the discussion a calm and productive one focussed on the content issue at hand. See also Wikipedia:Requests for comment#Suggestions for responding.

Greetings! You have been randomly selected to receive an invitation to participate in the request for comment on Talk:Greek genocide. Should you wish to respond to the invitation, your contribution to this discussion will be very much appreciated! However, please note that your input will carry no greater weight than anyone else's: remember that an RFC aims to reach a reasoned consensus position, and is not a vote. In support of that, your contribution should focus on thoughtful evaluation of the issues and available evidence, and provide further relevant evidence if possible.

Orphaned non-free image File:Rhodes University.jpg edit

Thanks for uploading File:Rhodes University.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described in the criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Skier Dude (talk) 04:56, 1 December 2011 (UTC)Reply

Don't you have anything better to do besides being a tool? Are you really going to do your very best to undo what I spent quite a lot of time doing based on some effing technicality? Jeezuz, man. Fine, delete the damn thing, delete the whole fucking encyclopedia for all I care. You deletionist pricks are the most pedantic, obstructive, truculent wankers on Wiki, and I really could not be bothered to try and resolve any more of these time wasting disputes. --User:DiscipleOfKnowledge (talk) 15:19, 2 December 2011 (UTC)Reply

Edits to the ANC article edit

What the hell happened here and here? I mean, at least the vandalism which replaced parts of the article with black bars was clever - but this? I'm not going to leave you the usual template warning about vandalism because you're a longstanding editor who knows the rules. - htonl (talk) 11:53, 8 December 2011 (UTC)Reply

My friend, I am truly sorry for this. I should not have allowed my disillusionment and personal differences to compromise the encyclopedia. Although those edits gave my heart great satisfaction, it undermines the work that you are doing. So, sorry. I am going to take a break from editing and will return when I am in a better state of mind. I have never been laid and don't have a girlfriend so I don't have anything better to do. I am a sad, sad, little man and should probably get therapy. I shall return soon.

Proposed deletion of Polyfill edit

The article Polyfill has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Unreferenced article about a neologism. No evidence provided that this term is notable.

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Non-free rationale for File:Sunday Times Front Page August 8, 2010.jpg edit

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:Sunday Times Front Page August 8, 2010.jpg.

Thank you. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 12:51, 13 February 2012 (UTC)Reply
