Hello

I don't think we ever met, but my name's Mitch. I used to work on hurricane articles often. My writing wasn't the best, so I stopped for a while. I've been watching some of your work. I am very impressed. :) - As a question, would you like to take on an 80s Atlantic storm request. I am sure Hurricanehink will go nuts, but it seems that more and more articles are popping up. I wrote three of the articles for storms in the 1982 Atlantic hurricane season - this would make an excellent Good Topic if you'd like to write Beryl (which used to have an article) and Ernesto (a fishspinner. If you'd like - I want to help collaborate with that with you. I believe that you are excellent in article writing and you need a good test :) - Mitch32(UP) 22:05, 29 October 2008 (UTC)

I saw :) - Ernesto remains when you're done, then if we want, we can get Debby and Chris to GA as well.Mitch32(UP) 21:45, 30 October 2008 (UTC)
Well, I ran it over with Hink. He is actually interested in seeing you finish Beryl. On the other hand, he gave grim outlook for Ernesto. I have both watchlisted, so in case something comes up. Chris & Debby need major work apparently.Mitch32(UP) 15:29, 1 November 2008 (UTC)

Can you expand Cyclone Elisa (2008)? I can't because my computer can't read the RSMC Nadi and JTWC bulletins. It doesn't matter when you expand it because I know you are getting a lot of requests.--Kirk76 1854 Atlantic Hurricane Season 20:42, 30 October 2008 (UTC)

Can you also do Hurricane Ele (2002)--Kirk76 1854 Atlantic Hurricane Season 20:55, 30 October 2008 (UTC)
I don't have the link, but the JMA best tracks for 2002 are at 2002 Pacific typhoon season#Tropical Storm Changmi. Go to the reference for the section and you will get all the bets tracks since the JMA only has wind and pressure and location. Sorry but this is the best I can do. (By the way, are you from the Howard Thorton School in New Rochelle the reason I am asking was that on Wednesday, I checked News 12 in the morning and it was the only school closed Also you do not have to respond to the question in the parenthesis)--Kirk76 1854 Atlantic Hurricane Season 23:16, 30 October 2008 (UTC)
The JTWC best track is at google search Unisys and go to Unisys tropical data. Then go to 2002 typhoon season best tracks.--Kirk76 1854 Atlantic Hurricane Season 23:18, 30 October 2008 (UTC)

Just take it to WP:WPTC/A, start a section for the article, and wait for people to comment/support an upgrade to A-Class. There's an unwritten rule that A-Class requires the support of about 3 or 4 editors at that page. Cheers, –Juliancolton Tropical Cyclone 21:28, 31 October 2008 (UTC)

Sounds good. Karina actually has a better chance at FAC than Erick did, mostly because of how much more info it has. –Juliancolton Tropical Cyclone 21:33, 31 October 2008 (UTC)
Here's an image that looks rather different than the one in the infobox. Unfortunately, with such a minor storm, finding good satellite images is often quite the task. –Juliancolton Tropical Cyclone 21:40, 31 October 2008 (UTC)

Tropical cyclones WikiProject Newsletter #22

Number 22, November 2, 2008

The Hurricane Herald

This is the monthly newsletter of WikiProject Tropical Cyclones. The Hurricane Herald aims to give a summary, both of the activities of the WikiProject and global tropical cyclone activity. If you wish to change how you receive this newsletter, or no longer wish to receive it, please add your username to the appropriate section on the mailing list. This newsletter covers all of October 2008.

Please visit this page and bookmark any suggestions of interest to you. This will help improve monitoring of the WikiProject's articles.

Storm of the month

Cyclone X

Deep Depression ARB 02 caused the 2008 Yemen floods. On October 19 the IMD noted that an area of low pressure which located to the south east of Salalah, Oman had intensifed in to a tropical depression and was assigned the number ARB 02. On October 21 IMD updated the system to a Deep Depression while it lay 700 km south of Salalah, Oman near the east coast of Somalia. It lost its strength while crossing the Gulf of Aden due to entry of dry air and land interaction as it passed close to the northeastern coast of Somalia. It later was downgraded to a Depression, named TC 03B by the JTWC. On October 24 it made landfall on the south-eastern coast of Yemen, leaving at least 26 civilians and six soldiers dead while trapping hundreds of people due to flooding and torrential rainfalls. The latest figure of casualties is of 184 persons dead and 100 others missing, mostly from the region of Hadhramawt, where the storm made landfall. A total of 733 houses were destroyed in the governorates of Hadhramaut and Al Mahrah, while 22,000 people were displaced. The Yemeni Government declared the two aforementioned governorates as disaster zones.

Other tropical cyclone activity

  • Atlantic Ocean– In the Atlantic, four tropical cyclones formed this October. Tropical Storm Marco formed in the Bay of Campeche on October 6. It made landfall on October 8 and is one of the smallest Atlantic tropical cyclones since 1988. Tropical Storm Nana formed October 12 in the middle of the open Atlantic. It had no impact anywhere and dissipated October 14. Hurricane Omar formed October 13 and dissipated October 18. Eventually peaking as a Category 4 hurricane, Omar passed through the Lesser Antilles twice, including once near peak intensity. Fortunately, it caused only one indirect death. Tropical Depression Sixteen formed on October 16 and dissipated two days later after making landfall. It killed 16 to 20 people in Central America.

Project News
A discussion concerning sandboxes for next year's articles has begun. Please consider working on sandboxes so they will be ready to publish. As tropical cyclones can form at any time in the western Pacific and northern Indian Oceans, these two season's should be made ready for cyclones by December. Ideally, due to the possibility of pre-season storms, the eastern Pacific and Atlantic seasons should also be ready by then, but they should at least be ready by the northern-Hemisphere antipeak in late February and early March. Seasons for the years 2010 to 2015 should be given the name "Post-2009 {ocean name} {cyclone term} seasons", as in "Post 2009 Atlantic hurricane seasons".

A category for tropical cyclone articles of very-low importance has been introduced. Although discussion is still ongoing, a rating of very-low-importance will generally be given to weak cyclones that do not have impact or set any sort of record.

Editorial
This month, our usual editor, Hurricanehink, has been on a semi-wikibreak until further notice. I am filling in as editor and distributor on an interim basis. The newsletter will continue as normal during that time. Thank you. Miss Madeline | Talk to Madeline 00:49, 2 November 2008 (UTC)

Articles

You seem to excel at creating articles for non-notable or minor storms, so I am here to request that you make articles for Tropical Storm Estelle (2004) and Hurricane Howard (2004). Also, I have hopes of making an article for Hurricane Tina (1992), but I can't until I know how to write an "instant GA" (like Tropical Storm Kika (2008) or Tropical Storm Lidia (2005)). Congrats on them, by the way! --Dylan620 (Homeyadda yadda yaddaOoooohh!) 11:44, 2 November 2008 (UTC)

Typhoon Ele Advisories

Hi there Cyclonebiskit,

I see that you have been having a few problems finding Public Advisories for Hurricane Ele (2002) whilst it was in the WPAC. Since 2000 The JTWC have archived all their advisories for WPAC Typhoons and NIO Cyclones in the folder named Guam Stuff. The JMA Archive their WWJP25 Advisories which might help you out in a folder named Tokyo.

Good Luck in expanding the article

Jason Rees (talk) 18:01, 2 November 2008 (UTC)

Oh no - Do you know if the advisories will open in your Mac? (check this by opening one of the advisories of the JTWC on one of the articles from this year) Jason Rees (talk) 18:22, 2 November 2008 (UTC)

Fuck - i dont know what you can do then, unless i C&P them in to a sandbox and put them in a sandbox and link them back to the advisories and you use what you need. Jason Rees (talk) 18:38, 2 November 2008 (UTC)

Ok Good Luck Jason Rees (talk) 19:02, 2 November 2008 (UTC)

Yep Jason Rees (talk) 19:17, 2 November 2008 (UTC)

JMA ATCR 2002. is located Here The actual TCR for ELE begins on page 48 but theirs quite a bit of data in the whole of the ATCR that might be of use to you. Jason Rees (talk) 19:40, 2 November 2008 (UTC)

Hernan protection

I have protected the Hurricane Hernan (2008) article for three days because of the edit warring there. Please take discussion to the talk page. You reverted six times on that article in an hour and eleven minutes. I suggest you read up on the three-revert rule if you aren't already familiar with it because your actions at the article clearly exceeded three reverts. Thank you, Metros (talk) 18:16, 2 November 2008 (UTC)

Quick question in doing a quick glance again at the article: Is there another way to phrase this line: "The storm never approached land during its lifespan, and no damage or casualties were reported."? Technically, unless the hurricane remained stationary, it was always approaching land. Hypothetically, if the hurricane was 1,000 miles offshore and moved 30 miles to the northeast, it was then 30 miles closer to whatever was up in the northeast area, so, in essence, it approached the land. Can you find a statistic somewhere that says something along the lines of "Hernan never came closer than XXX miles from land after reaching hurricane strength"? I don't know if that's possible to track down. Yes, I know it's a picky thing, but, that's what I am :) Metros (talk) 23:57, 2 November 2008 (UTC)

Actually, one such timeline was sent to GAN a while ago. It was failed because it was a list, and GA is intended for articles. But who knows? It might be able to pass. I apologize for the late response. If you ask me, Cyclonebiskit, you were being modest when you sent me your initial response. You said you weren't a great writer, when four of your articles were listed as GA-class the day after they were written (and I'm excluding a fifth one, Karina). If you really aren't a great writer, you're definitely good enough for my taste. :-) Anyway, I was thinking we could do Hurricane Olaf (2003) as a hardcore tutorial, before I create Hurricane Marie (2008) as sort of a practice test.
As for you, Yellow Evan, I would prefer if you stayed out of this. I am in no way stopping you from editing; it's just that I would like just Cyclonebiskit and I to work on Olaf and Marie because we will be using them as my tutorial articles. --Dylan620 (Homeyadda yadda yaddaOoooohh!) 16:18, 4 November 2008 (UTC)

Re:

Hey, thanks. I figured that was you, since I saw you move the Louisiana hurricanes page from the old user sandbox to your sandbox. It's good to see you've phoenixed from that old name into a productive editor! ♬♩ Hurricanehink (talk) 19:31, 4 November 2008 (UTC)

If it hadn't been for that, I would've been totally shocked. Maybe save that project for the off-season ;) Heck, I might join you and work on Texas hurricanes during the off-season. ♬♩ Hurricanehink (talk) 19:42, 4 November 2008 (UTC)
Yea, it seems like the format is having text now. Louisiana would probably have to be split up by a few time periods, looking at how busy it is. But seriously, you shouldn't try too hard to get it done within or week, or you'll get Wikibonked again. ♬♩ Hurricanehink (talk) 19:49, 4 November 2008 (UTC)
So it sounds like you need to get all of the fish storms out of your system, so you can work on an article of bigger importance ;) There's still a few dozen EPAC fishies that have both TWO's and the discussions. But seriously, good luck with Ele and helping out Dylan. I wouldn't worry much about Louisiana. It would be nice to have eventually, but it's not a top priority. ♬♩ Hurricanehink (talk) 20:00, 4 November 2008 (UTC)

Re: 2005 PHS

Yea, looking good so far. Few comments. See if there is any information from the discussions/other areas for the storm histories of each storm. Also, since you're providing the overview for the whole season (and now the season article is not technically split between each storm), you should keep in mind that you are writing almost a met. history for the entire season. That means you should note any unusually long breaks from activity, any monthly records, and, importantly, whenever more than one storm is active at the same time. Good luck with the article. ♬♩ Hurricanehink (talk) 15:39, 14 November 2008 (UTC)

I would try and use a collection of NCDC, newspaper sources, and possibly Mexican government reports. ♬♩ Hurricanehink (talk) 21:58, 17 November 2008 (UTC)
Well, that and the newspaper reports would probably come from a good Google search. ♬♩ Hurricanehink (talk) 22:03, 17 November 2008 (UTC)
What's the link? I don't know that much about Fair Use, but if it's the sort of thing where it's for educational use, there's no free equivalent available, and it really accompanies the text well, then it should probably be good. Also, I sort of doubt the government is making a lot of money off of the image. ♬♩ Hurricanehink (talk) 22:15, 17 November 2008 (UTC)
Hmm. PDF's aren't working on my computer at the moment, but I know the sort of image you are talking about. Yes, that would qualify as fair use, but you need to talk about the image (specifically talk about Dora's rainfall) in the text. ♬♩ Hurricanehink (talk) 22:31, 17 November 2008 (UTC)
I'm not sure. You're uploading on en.wp, not commons, right? I've never been that good with fair use, especially with the new format for the upload page. Maybe your best bet would be asking here, or just asking another user. Sorry I couldn't be helpful. ♬♩ Hurricanehink (talk) 22:42, 17 November 2008 (UTC)

Timelines

Congratulations on your second FL, Cyclonebiskit! I'm a tad curious; advisories for Atlantic and EPac storms before 2004 are not available, and yet a timeline for 2003 is featured. How do you do make featured timelines for hurricane seasons that do not have advisories available for their storms (i.e. 2003)? Could you please show me how by using a timeline for the 2002 Atlantic hurricane season as a tutorial? This might sound weird, but for me, an FL might be easier than a GA! --Dylan620 (Homeyadda yadda yaddaOoooohh!) 20:42, 15 November 2008 (UTC)

Thank you very much. :-) I'm off to work on the timeline for the 2001 Atlantic hurricane season. Perhaps, if I follow your instructions, it may be my first FL. I came to you for GA and FL help; next, I plan on requesting help from my main tutor, Juliancolton, for FA and FP help. I haven't written any GA's yet, BTW. Re: Possibly

Heh, let me first say that I'm hardly the most ideal admin candidate. I got the tools because people know me, and (I believe) I've created a positive image for myself that people can trust. Most admin candidates take the route of being a regular in reverting vandalism, reporting people for blocks, etc. etc. That isn't my style, but that is how most admin candidates get the mop. I personally dislike the idea of admin teaching. Really, the best way to be qualified to be an admin is to be well-rounded and well-connected.

The first part (well-rounded) is at the discretion of the editor. It shouldn't be a facade; if you decide to go to AFD's and rv like crazy all of the sudden, then that isn't really who you are as an editor. At the same time, to be well-connected you have go outside of the article space and share your input. Myself? I built up a reputation without realizing it. I created well-written articles and helped our project grow, at the same time of doing some minor chores I didn't even think of. The longer and more substantially you edit, the more you learn, and the more people know about you.

Take writing FAC's, which was my route. If you get a small, inconsequential storm to FA status, and only two people support it with little horrah, then the experience won't do that much. On the other hand, if you do something significant (sadly Tropical cyclone is already featured), then you will get a lot of credence for that. If ten people support that FAC, then chances are those ten people will remember you. The result multiplies when you do it again. A smaller, but still noticeable impact, is using the talk pages. And yes, AFD and reverting vandalism are certainly good credentials to backup your adminship bid.

So, to long-windedly answer your question, I'll be your mentor if you still want me to be, and I'm honored you asked me. You seem to be on your way, so I'll ask you the big questions that all prospective admin candidates are faced with.

  1. What do you think are the best contributions you have made?
  2. Have you had any conflicts since becoming an editor?
  3. Why do you want the admin tools?

Cheers. ♬♩ Hurricanehink (talk) 02:54, 18 November 2008 (UTC)

I'm not so sure you need the admin tools, and I'm not sure if you've convinced yourself either. If you want to go the route of saying that you want to be an extra person someone can go to, then you are bound to get some opposes. If it's about the power of blocking, then that is the typical route for admins. That means you really need to brush up on policy, since it's somewhat competitive. For example, if someone reverts a page three times in a 24 hour period, what do you do? Needless to say, that edit war on Hernan might cost you a bit, meaning you have to demonstrate appropriate warning next time. Become very familiar with the warning templates.

Also, regarding Yellow Evan, there is a relevant discussion about him on WP:ANI#User:Yellow Evan. Feedback from project users would be helpful.

Oh, and yea, I meant what article are you proudest of?

Talk:Hurricane Carlotta (2006)/GA1

Just wanted to remind you about Hurricane Carlotta (2006)'s GA review. Yellow Evan has claimed to have retired, and little or no effort has been made to improve the article. Cheers, –Juliancolton Tropical Cyclone 16:28, 18 November 2008 (UTC)

Well, he seems to still be editing, but this post indicates that he will be leaving. –Juliancolton Tropical Cyclone 17:54, 18 November 2008 (UTC)
Actually, I will still be here but will rarely be editing in the mainspace. I will still be watching the project grow and will be logged in most of the time. Cheers. Leave Message ,Yellow Evan home , User:Yellow Evan/Sandbox

Re: Source question

Oftentimes, with enough searching, you can find copies of subscription-only sources elsewhere on the internet, and if not, the hurricane archive might yield the same info. If you'd like, you can point me to the sources you've found, and I'll try to help find free copies for you. Good luck with the article. –Juliancolton Tropical Cyclone 00:49, 20 November 2008 (UTC)

It might be a good idea to include it within the storm history section. Every last detail doesn't need to be written, but it certainly seems like something worth mentioning. –Juliancolton Tropical Cyclone 21:40, 20 November 2008 (UTC)
The Bonnie article looks good so far. Do you plan on adding more impact info? –Juliancolton Tropical Cyclone 21:47, 20 November 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for the barnstar. :-) –Juliancolton Tropical Cyclone 14:14, 21 November 2008 (UTC)

Re: Question about 2008 Global Cyclone season impact table

The page looks good, overall. I'm not sure the storm-by-storm description is need in prose. It's up to you, but it seems slightly redundant to the table. Either way, good luck with the article. Cheers, –Juliancolton Tropical Cyclone 15:35, 20 November 2008 (UTC)

Re: User needing a block

I gave the user a {{verror3}}, which warns on introducing factual errors. I'm not sure a block is needed at the moment, as a few of the accounts edits almost look to be in good-faith. –Juliancolton Tropical Cyclone 16:46, 21 November 2008 (UTC)

On another note, could you throw together a meteorological history for Hurricane Flossie (2007)? I stink at anything more significant than this or this. :) –Juliancolton Tropical Cyclone 17:21, 21 November 2008 (UTC)

Edit warring

Just a heads-up, but you violated WP:3rr on Tropical Depression Sixteen (2008). I'm not going to block you, but please be careful. :-) –Juliancolton Tropical Cyclone 22:35, 21 November 2008 (UTC)

Yeah, it does. The best thing to do when you find yourself in an edit war is to discuss the matter on the talk page. Let me know once you and the IP find a compromise/solution and I can unprotected the article. Cheers, –Juliancolton Tropical Cyclone 22:38, 21 November 2008 (UTC)

2001 Timeline

Re: 2006 PHS

Bug 16085

To keep discussions centralised, I have started a discussion here about the validity of opposes based on a broken timeline caused by Bug 16085. Hopefully we can together establish consensus one way or another. Rambo's Revenge (talk) 12:12, 22 November 2008 (UTC)

Re: Could you..?

Sure, I'll take a look soon. About Kiko, keep in mind that the automated PR review says that every page listed needs a copyedit, as it's just assumed that the writing is never perfect. :-) I wouldn't be too concerned about it, and the lead seems of appropriate length. –Juliancolton Tropical Cyclone 17:02, 23 November 2008 (UTC)

Re: Question about the 2008 ATL season

Yeah, that might be a good idea, depending on how much of the info is sourced. –Juliancolton Tropical Cyclone 02:39, 24 November 2008 (UTC)

The page looks good. I guess now we just wait for the other TCRs. :-) Sorry I didn't see your message earlier. –Juliancolton Tropical Cyclone 02:31, 25 November 2008 (UTC)

Image mapping

I have mapped the image at Timeline of the 2001 Atlantic hurricane season, please check if this has any mistakes, but I hope it doesn't. Also before it can go back to FLC I think GimmeBot has to run to close the old one properly and this won't happen until 0:00 Wednesday. Rambo's Revenge (talk) 16:23, 24 November 2008 (UTC)

For someone that yesterday said "I have no clue how to map images" you did a very good job on Timeline of the 1982 Atlantic hurricane season today! Seems I have become redundant. :)

TD numbering

There's a chance that 1969 used a similar system in the NHC maps/numbering system that 1970-1973 did, in that the missing TDs were eastern Pacific formations. The problem is, the TDs in the eastern Pacific were not numbered in the map series that year, and the eastern tropical Atlantic was generally left unanalyzed in the map series. NHC is quite aware of the numbering problems, but has not worked at resolving the situation either. There just hasn't been much of a demand for a TD climatology over the years. I have an excel file at work that is my best guess at how all the various TDs/nondeveloping systems formed in sequence in the late 1960s and early 1970s based upon all available sources. Keep in mind the tracks within that file were created by a hurricane specialist annually after the fact between 1968-1987, who then retired in 1988, and they were only recently digitized. The whole numbering fiasco likely won't be solved until the reanalysis is complete through that year. The UNNAMED systems in that file were systems they recognized after the fact, which were written up in the annual summary articles, but not acknowledged in real-time, so the only source for those are the annual articles. As for the second ST, check for a portion of a system recognized in real-time which was subtropical while it had winds of 35+ knots. If only I was a doctor... Thegreatdr (talk) 01:15, 26 November 2008 (UTC)

Camille is AL0969. There are also potential issues of TDs being recognized in real-time differently than they were after the fact, which plays with the "order" of the pseudo-ATCF numbers, sometimes throwing them out of order. I followed the numbering they use in-house for ATCF numbers in years prior to ATCF (1990.) =) Thegreatdr (talk) 01:29, 26 November 2008 (UTC)
Thegreatdr provided good information, so it looks like your question may have already been answered; however, it might be a good idea to avoid using depression designations at all. For example, "A tropical depression forms to the southeast of X". –Juliancolton Tropical Cyclone 02:08, 26 November 2008 (UTC)

Yeah, I've driven by the area several times. I might even have a picture of downed trees, so I'll check for that. –Juliancolton Tropical Cyclone 00:20, 27 November 2008 (UTC)
That's a great picture, but I'm not sure about its copyright status. It's not a Government source, so unless it came from somewhere other than the website it's on, it's probably not free-use. –Juliancolton Tropical Cyclone 00:40, 27 November 2008 (UTC)

WPTC IRC channel

I don't know if you've heard of it, but the project has an IRC channel, which is a great place to talk about the project. Julian and I are usually on (Julian more than me). The instant communication is great for dealing with small issues, and talking about stuff in general. If you're interested, a lot of people use Mibbit.com. Just click here; next to IRC: click on the scroll window and find Freenode. Then, put Cyclonebiskit as your "nick", and #wiki-hurricanes as your channel. I hope you stop in some time. ♬♩ Hurricanehink (talk) 03:14, 27 November 2008 (UTC)

I got Kristy's little problems. So what do you think about coming on IRC? ♬♩ Hurricanehink (talk) 04:04, 27 November 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for passing. BTW, I'm on now, but I don't see you. Can you see any of the other members in the channel? You can respond here to avoid the awkward 2 page conversation. ♬♩ Hurricanehink (talk) 04:10, 27 November 2008 (UTC)

Are you sure you followed the directions correctly? Mibbit.com is the site. When it sais "IRC:", to the right of that is a window that scrolls, which by default says "Mibbit webirc". Go down to "Freenode". Then, put Cyclonebiskit (or Jason Rees) as your "nick", and #wiki-hurricanes as the channel. ♬♩ Hurricanehink (talk) 04:23, 27 November 2008 (UTC)

Timeline of the 2001 Atlantic hurricane season

According to this, it's ready for A-Class. Since you were a good help in the article's improvement, I'd like to let you know. I'm off to submit this to WP:WPTC/A. If it passes the A-Class assessment, there will be only one chapter left in the User:Dylan620/2001 AHS Improvement Directory series; improving the timeline from A-Class to FL-Class. --Dylan620 (Homeyadda yadda yaddaOoooohh!) 00:30, 30 November 2008 (UTC)
