I don't think we ever met, but my name's Mitch. I used to work on hurricane articles often. My writing wasn't the best, so I stopped for a while. I've been watching some of your work. I am very impressed. :) - As a question, would you like to take on an 80s Atlantic storm request. I am sure Hurricanehink will go nuts, but it seems that more and more articles are popping up. I wrote three of the articles for storms in the 1982 Atlantic hurricane season - this would make an excellent Good Topic if you'd like to write Beryl (which used to have an article) and Ernesto (a fishspinner. I don't have the link, but the JMA best tracks for 2002 are at 2002 Pacific typhoon season#Tropical Storm Changmi. Go to the reference for the section and you will get all the bets tracks since the JMA only has wind and pressure and location. Sorry but this is the best I can do. This is the monthly newsletter of WikiProject Tropical Cyclones. The Hurricane Herald aims to give a summary, both of the activities of the WikiProject and global tropical cyclone activity. Storm of the month

Cyclone X

Deep Depression ARB 02 caused the 2008 Yemen floods. On October 19 the IMD noted that an area of low pressure which located to the south east of Salalah, Oman had intensifed in to a tropical depression and was assigned the number ARB 02. On October 21 IMD updated the system to a Deep Depression while it lay 700 km south of Salalah, Oman near the east coast of Somalia. It lost its strength while crossing the Gulf of Aden due to entry of dry air and land interaction as it passed close to the northeastern coast of Somalia. It later was downgraded to a Depression, named TC 03B by the JTWC. On October 24 it made landfall on the south-eastern coast of Yemen, leaving at least 26 civilians and six soldiers dead while trapping hundreds of people due to flooding and torrential rainfalls. The latest figure of casualties is of 184 persons dead and 100 others missing, mostly from the region of Hadhramawt, where the storm made landfall. A total of 733 houses were destroyed in the governorates of Hadhramaut and Al Mahrah, while 22,000 people were displaced. The Yemeni Government declared the two aforementioned governorates as disaster zones.

Other tropical cyclone activity

• Atlantic Ocean– In the Atlantic, four tropical cyclones formed this October. Tropical Storm Marco formed in the Bay of Campeche on October 6. It made landfall on October 8 and is one of the smallest Atlantic tropical cyclones since 1988. Tropical Storm Nana formed October 12 in the middle of the open Atlantic. It had no impact anywhere and dissipated October 14. Hurricane Omar formed October 13 and dissipated October 18. Eventually peaking as a Category 4 hurricane, Omar passed through the Lesser Antilles twice, including once near peak intensity. Fortunately, it caused only one indirect death. Tropical Depression Sixteen formed on October 16 and dissipated two days later after making landfall. It killed 16 to 20 people in Central America.

• Eastern Pacific Ocean– In the eastern north Pacific, three tropical cyclones formed this October. Hurricane Norbert formed October 3 and dissipated October 12. The strongest storm thus far this season, Norbert is the first hurricane to strike the west coast of the Baja California Peninsula since 1968. Eight deaths have been blamed on the hurricane.. Tropical Storm Odile formed October 8 and paralleled the coast of Mexico before dissipating on October 12. Tropical Depression Seventeen-E formed on October 23 and dissipated the next day without impacting land.

• Western Pacific Ocean– In the western north Pacific, two tropical cyclones formed. Tropical Storm Bavi formed October 18 in the open Pacific. It never came near land and dissipated three days later. Tropical Depression Twenty Two-W formed on October 13 in the Gulf of Tonkin and made landfall on October 15. It dissipated inland the next day.

• North Indian– In the northern Indian Ocean, two cyclones formed. Besides Deep Depression ARB 02, which caused flooding that killed 184 people in Yemen, Cyclonic Storm Rashmi formed October 25 and made landfall three days later. It killed two people.

• South-West Indian – The 2008-09 South West Indian Ocean Season got off to an early start with two pre season zones of disturbed weather. The first zone of disturbed weather formed on October 6 and did not develop any further. Whilst the second zone of disturbed weather formed on October 16 and developed in to Moderate Tropical Storm Asma.

Project News
A discussion concerning sandboxes for next year's articles has begun. Please consider working on sandboxes so they will be ready to publish. As tropical cyclones can form at any time in the western Pacific and northern Indian Oceans, these two season's should be made ready for cyclones by December. Ideally, due to the possibility of pre-season storms, the eastern Pacific and Atlantic seasons should also be ready by then, but they should at least be ready by the northern-Hemisphere antipeak in late February and early March. Seasons for the years 2010 to 2015 should be given the name "Post-2009 {ocean name} {cyclone term} seasons", as in "Post 2009 Atlantic hurricane seasons".

A category for tropical cyclone articles of very-low importance has been introduced. Although discussion is still ongoing, a rating of very-low-importance will generally be given to weak cyclones that do not have impact or set any sort of record.

Typhoon Ele Advisories

Hi there Cyclonebiskit,

I see that you have been having a few problems finding Public Advisories for Hurricane Ele (2002) whilst it was in the WPAC. Since 2000 The JTWC have archived all their advisories for WPAC Typhoons and NIO Cyclones in the folder named Guam Stuff. The JMA Archive their WWJP25 Advisories which might help you out in a folder named Tokyo.

Hernan protection

I have protected the Hurricane Hernan (2008) article for three days because of the edit warring there. Please take discussion to the talk page. You reverted six times on that article in an hour and eleven minutes. I suggest you read up on the three-revert rule if you aren't already familiar with it because your actions at the article clearly exceeded three reverts. Quick question in doing a quick glance again at the article: Is there another way to phrase this line: "The storm never approached land during its lifespan, and no damage or casualties were reported."? Technically, unless the hurricane remained stationary, it was always approaching land. Hypothetically, if the hurricane was 1,000 miles offshore and moved 30 miles to the northeast, it was then 30 miles closer to whatever was up in the northeast area, so, in essence, it approached the land. Can you find a statistic somewhere that says something along the lines of "Hernan never came closer than XXX miles from land after reaching hurricane strength"? I don't know if that's possible to track down. Yes, I know it's a picky thing, but, that's what I am :) Metros (talk) 23:57, 2 November 2008 (UTC)

I apologize for the late response. If you ask me, Cyclonebiskit, you were being modest when you sent me your initial response. You said you weren't a great writer, when four of your articles were listed as GA-class the day after they were written (and I'm excluding a fifth one, Karina). If you really aren't a great writer, you're definitely good enough for my taste. :-) Anyway, I was thinking we could do Hurricane Olaf (2003) as a hardcore tutorial, before I create Hurricane Marie (2008) as sort of a practice test.

As for you, Yellow Evan, I would prefer if you stayed out of this. Yea, looking good so far. Few comments. See if there is any information from the discussions/other areas for the storm histories of each storm. Also, since you're providing the overview for the whole season (and now the season article is not technically split between each storm), you should keep in mind that you are writing almost a met. history for the entire season. That means you should note any unusually long breaks from activity, any monthly records, and, importantly, whenever more than one storm is active at the same time. What's the link? I don't know that much about Fair Use, but if it's the sort of thing where it's for educational use, there's no free equivalent available, and it really accompanies the text well, then it should probably be good. I'm not sure. You're uploading on en.wp, not commons, right? I've never been that good with fair use, especially with the new format for the upload page. Timelines

Congratulations on your second FL, Cyclonebiskit! I'm a tad curious; advisories for Atlantic and EPac storms before 2004 are not available, and yet a timeline for 2003 is featured. How do you do make featured timelines for hurricane seasons that do not have advisories available for their storms (i.e. 2003)? Could you please show me how by using a timeline for the 2002 Atlantic hurricane season as a tutorial? Heh, let me first say that I'm hardly the most ideal admin candidate. I got the tools because people know me, and (I believe) I've created a positive image for myself that people can trust. Most admin candidates take the route of being a regular in reverting vandalism, reporting people for blocks, etc. etc. That isn't my style, but that is how most admin candidates get the mop. I personally dislike the idea of admin teaching. Really, the best way to be qualified to be an admin is to be well-rounded and well-connected.

The first part (well-rounded) is at the discretion of the editor. It shouldn't be a facade; if you decide to go to AFD's and rv like crazy all of the sudden, then that isn't really who you are as an editor. At the same time, to be well-connected you have go outside of the article space and share your input. Myself? I built up a reputation without realizing it. I created well-written articles and helped our project grow, at the same time of doing some minor chores I didn't even think of. The longer and more substantially you edit, the more you learn, and the more people know about you.

Take writing FAC's, which was my route. If you get a small, inconsequential storm to FA status, and only two people support it with little horrah, then the experience won't do that much. On the other hand, if you do something significant (sadly Tropical cyclone is already featured), then you will get a lot of credence for that. If ten people support that FAC, then chances are those ten people will remember you. The result multiplies when you do it again. A smaller, but still noticeable impact, is using the talk pages. And yes, AFD and reverting vandalism are certainly good credentials to backup your adminship bid.

So, to long-windedly answer your question, I'll be your mentor if you still want me to be, and I'm honored you asked me. You seem to be on your way, so I'll ask you the big questions that all prospective admin candidates are faced with.

1. What do you think are the best contributions you have made?
2. Have you had any conflicts since becoming an editor?
3. Why do you want the admin tools?

I'm not so sure you need the admin tools, and I'm not sure if you've convinced yourself either. If you want to go the route of saying that you want to be an extra person someone can go to, then you are bound to get some opposes. If it's about the power of blocking, then that is the typical route for admins. That means you really need to brush up on policy, since it's somewhat competitive. For example, if someone reverts a page three times in a 24 hour period, what do you do? Needless to say, that edit war on Hernan might cost you a bit, meaning you have to demonstrate appropriate warning next time. Become very familiar with the warning templates.

Also, regarding Yellow Evan, there is a relevant discussion about him on WP:ANI#User:Yellow Evan. Feedback from project users would be helpful.

Oh, and yea, I meant what article are you proudest of?

TD numbering

There's a chance that 1969 used a similar system in the NHC maps/numbering system that 1970-1973 did, in that the missing TDs were eastern Pacific formations. The problem is, the TDs in the eastern Pacific were not numbered in the map series that year, and the eastern tropical Atlantic was generally left unanalyzed in the map series. NHC is quite aware of the numbering problems, but has not worked at resolving the situation either. There just hasn't been much of a demand for a TD climatology over the years. I have an excel file at work that is my best guess at how all the various TDs/nondeveloping systems formed in sequence in the late 1960s and early 1970s based upon all available sources. Keep in mind the tracks within that file were created by a hurricane specialist annually after the fact between 1968-1987, who then retired in 1988, and they were only recently digitized. The whole numbering fiasco likely won't be solved until the reanalysis is complete through that year. The UNNAMED systems in that file were systems they recognized after the fact, which were written up in the annual summary articles, but not acknowledged in real-time, so the only source for those are the annual articles. As for the second ST, check for a portion of a system recognized in real-time which was subtropical while it had winds of 35+ knots. If only I was a doctor... There are also potential issues of TDs being recognized in real-time differently than they were after the fact, which plays with the "order" of the pseudo-ATCF numbers, sometimes throwing them out of order. Are you sure you followed the directions correctly? Mibbit.com is the site. When it sais "IRC:", to the right of that is a window that scrolls, which by default says "Mibbit webirc".
