Please offer your thoughts

I would appreciate comments and suggestions on any contributions I make. I am learning.Cullen328 (talk) 03:22, 3 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

Nice work on Jules Eichorn. He's been needing an article for a while.   Will Beback  talk  06:28, 31 July 2009 (UTC)Reply
If I may suggest, now that you've posted the Eichorn article the draft below might be deleted. It's your talk page to do with as you like, but it's a bit hard to edit around.
As for formatting and pictures, a good way to learn is to look around at other articles to see what you think looks best. It can be helpful to break up long blocks of text into subsections. Perhaps it'd be possible to split the biography into two or three eras. Other than that, the formatting is usually kept fairly plain. As for photos, it's easy to upload them: the trick is in finding photos with appropriate licensing. If you have any personal photos then those'd be fine. There are might be pictures of the peaks he did first ascents on in the Wikicommons. File:Cathedral Peak.png is a so-so pic of Eichorn Pinnacle.
As before, feel free to ask if you have any questions. There are several editors here who are mountaineers or just admirers of the Sierra, so you're in good company.   Will Beback  talk  21:13, 31 July 2009 (UTC)Reply
PS: Many editors create "sandbox" pages for drafting articles. For example, User talk:Cullen328/Sandbox.   Will Beback  talk  00:17, 1 August 2009

Your climber biographies

Hey Jim, just wanted to say welcome and thanks for your contributions to the Sierra Nevada climbing history articles. You're filling a niche that's been missing here, I look forward to working with you. --Justin (talk) 11:54, 27 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

I'll second that. Nice work on Allen Steck and welcome to Wikipedia. I don't know who you are planning to write up next but if your taking requests I think Peter Croft (climber) could really use a page. If you ever have any questions please ask. Thanks again for your great additions.--OMCV (talk) 02:25, 29 August 2009 (UTC)Reply
Thanks Justin and OMCV. I am beginning work on Tom Frost and Glen Dawson. Comments on Norman Clyde would be welcomed. I will defintely read up on Peter Croft, OMCV. I am still "learning the ropes" in Wikipedia, to use a climbing analogy, and have all sorts of things in mind. My biggest challenge right now is getting permission to use images. My next biggest challenge is hiking to the top of Mt. Whitney with my wife in ten days - she's never been above 12,000 feet except for the train ride up Pikes Peak. As she's 56 and developing arthritis in her toes, it will be an accomplishment if she (and I) complete the Class 1 feat. Jim Heaphy (talk) 02:34, 29 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

Request of Help on "Just the Facts" Tone

edit

Hi Jim,

I am very new to Wikipedia. I got your feedback on the draft article located under PhoCoHaNoi. Thanks so much for your comments. I would greatly appreciate if you would spare some valuable time to highlight those parts from the draft that I need to pay close attentions to regarding the aspect that you raised. I know it would be a long shot to ask if you would even consider providing specific examples by directly editing them on the draft.

Lastly, I still do not know on how to submit the revision for review. I do not see any obvious buttons or pull-down menus from the Sandbox setting that would be able to allow to submit the article for review.

Thank you so much.

PhoCoHaNoi

Hello, PhoCoHaNoi. I am not going to edit the draft myself, because I want this to be a learning exercise for you. Here are a few examples of unacceptable wording:
  • "celebrating the 73-year history of outstanding men and women"
  • "pioneering contributions"
  • "sustained leadership and strategic vision"
  • "Exceptional services to innovation ecosystem"
  • "stimulating small business innovation, meeting the Air Force and DoD R&D needs, broadening participation in innovation and entrepreneurship, and boosting commercialization"
  • " So, as Dr. Pham looked back now, he brought systems-theoretic science and control engineering principles, together with teamwork and interdisciplinary to bear fruition in solving warfighter engineering problems, various areas of specific focus for increased activities in space control autonomy and space domain awareness."
It is not the job of a Wikipedia editor (you) to praise a person. Every trace of this non-neutral language must be removed. A Wikipedia article should never say "Person A is great!" Instead, it should say "Reliable source C reports that Expert B says that Person A is great", along with a reference to Reliable source C.
As for how to submit your draft, I will explain that when the draft complies with the neutral point of view. Cullen328 Let's discuss it

Sending Messages to Other Editors

Hi Jim. I will deeply appreciate anything that you can do to help. How can I find out about other editors and send them messages? I recently looked for an article about The Italian Coffee Company that I had read years ago. However, I could not find it. I believe that this article should be available. I am a new editor and I have a big learning curve ahead of me. Maybe you can post to my talk page. I am user Mojosa17. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Question from Mattyzeeeee (13:51, 19 July 2024)

edit

Hi! I just have a question about a wiki page for the Australian Citizens Party that was written by an oppositional politician years ago. Everytime the actual members try to change it to properly describe their party, this guy and some other obvious followers object their revision, call it obvious vandalism, and its back to being a slanderous description again instead. I am curious, what can they do to stop this guy from continuously doing this? It says all sorts of crap, like they are conspiracy theorists and climate denialists which couldn't be further from the truth. Is it cos this jerk started their write up that he has power over everything that gets said on there? Seriously tho, someone needs to be held accountable for the bullshit that they have had to put up trying to fix their page. Talk to anyone on the Australian citizens party and u will find out they aren't the party described. I know this probably isn't the right avenue to follow this up, but it's the only line of contact I could find that would hopefully get to a real person. PLEASE HELP these guys get this monkey off their back! Thanks in advance for any help may give them.. BTW... their page link is this.. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Australian_Citizens_Party# --Mattyzeeeee (talk) 13:51, 19 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Mattyzeeeee I saw this as I watch this talk page. How do you know who is a member of the party? The lead in this version read like the party manifesto[https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Australian_Citizens_Party&oldid=1222748161 or Facebook page, It uses the word "our" which is clearly unencyclopedic, and language such as "Under the Crown, corporations, banks and other lackeys of the City of London and Wall Street have been profiting from the exploitation of Australia’s natural resources, privatisation of our essential services, deregulation of our industries and through their hold over the political process to protect their speculation within our banks." which we would never use. Lackeys? This is not the party's page and they have no rights over it. Are you a party member? Doug Weller talk 14:18, 19 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
Mattyzeeeee, the Neutral point of view is a core content policy on Wikipedia, and an article about an organization such as a political party should summarize what reliable sources fully independent of the party say about it. The proper place to make specific proposals to improve the article should be made at Talk: Australian Citizens Party, where no one has commented since 2021. One thing is certain. The article will not be controlled by members of that party. Cullen328 (talk) 18:18, 19 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

Nandipha Magudumana

edit

Hello Cullen328, following is a draft of Nandipha Magudumana's legal issues. You instructed me on this discussion to present the draft to you before moving it to the article. I tried to narrow down the content as much as I can as there's way more to the story. I literally spent over 4 hours working on this, please help me make this work.

Draft

Nandipha Magudumana is facing prison time for allegedly aiding Thabo Bester escape from the Mangaung Penitentiary.[1] Magudumana is incarcerated and investigated for aiding and abetting a prison escape, fraud, murder, corruption and violating bodies,[2][1] as she allegedly stole three bodies from morgues in Free State.[3] On 7 April 2023, Magudumana, Bester and a Mozambican national were apprehended in Arusha, Tanzania,[4] heading towards the border of Kenya.[5] On 13 April, Magudumana and Bester landed on a private jet at the Lanseria International Airport after there were deported by Tanzania.[6] Since then, she has been detain at Kroonstad Women's Prison in Free State.[1] On 17 April, the four accused: Magudumana, Magudumana's father Zolile Sekeleni, Integritron CCTV technician Tebogo James Lipholo and former G4S prison warden Senohe Matsoara appeared in Bloemfontein High Court where Sekeleni was granted a R10,000 bail and the murder charge against him was dropped on conditions that he had to report Port Edward police station at least once a week and he was prohibited from contacting any of the witnesses, while Matsoara, Lipholo and Magudumana remained in custody as their bail until their bail application was set for 3 and 4 May 2023.[7] DNA profiling tests were conducted, and on 21 April 2023, the South African Police Service reported that the burnt remains found in Bester's prison cell belonged to Katlego Bereng Mpholo, who went missing in March 2022.[2]

Magudumana then appeared in Bloemfontein Magistrate's Court on 11 and 13 May 2023, but both dates were postponed to 16 May to gather further evidence.[2] Magudumana file for bail and argued that her arrest was unlawful,[8] she went on to argue that "The nature of the evidence upon which the State relies is of a very poor nature and is unsubstantiated".[9] On 29 August 2023, Magudumana told the court that she was detained by Bester against her will and she was forced to flee the country, however the allegations were disputed because she allegedly fetched Bester from KwaZulu-Natal after the escape, and they were later spotted together shopping in Sandton.[10] On 11 September 2023, Magudumana's was denied bail as Magistrate Estelle de Lange said that she was a flight risk.[3] In early November 2023, the Bloemfontein High Court dismissed Magudumana's bail appeal. Acting judge Melissa Jordaan stated that Magudumana played the main role in Bester's prison escape and that when the pair was arrested in Tanzania, Magudumana was found with an unstamped passport, proving that Magudumana is a potential flight risk.[11]

dxneo, I do not approve of is facing prison time in an article about a person who has not been convicted. I think this material is far too detailed, and it should be condensed to two or three sentences. Your proposed content reads like you are making the prosecution's case for them, and I would encourage you to be careful to avoid that kind of tone. Cullen328 (talk) 01:59, 27 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

While I certainly don't think that bloodofox's first reaction should have been to run to ANI, I gotta say that "userpage clearly espouses neopaganism baloney" isn't really a great thing for me to read as I perused ANI this morning. Unlike myself, bloodofox doesn't actually state they are neopagan in any way on their user page - the fact that they are interested in Germanic paganism and folklore does not necessarily have any bearing on what their own religious views are. I mean, I'm a practicing Roman reconstructionist (i.e. neopagan) and yet a large chunk of my contributions are to medieval Christian bishops. Also - would you have said to a Jewish editor "userpage clearly espouses Jewish baloney" or to a Muslim editor "userpage clearly espouses Islamic baloney"? I have a great deal of respect for you in general Cullen, but that bit really did not sit well with me. Ealdgyth (talk) 12:26, 7 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

You are right, Ealdgyth. I was overly sarcastic and dismissive. I apologize to you and to Bloodofox. Cullen328 (talk) 17:42, 7 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
No worries... we can all have bad days - and I will admit I'm a bit raw this week too - had to put my oldest mare to sleep on Monday and it's made my week The Suck, for sure. Thank you for the apology, although it really wasn't necessary. Ealdgyth (talk) 18:08, 7 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

Thank you both!!! I came here to say much the same thing, only to see that Ealdgyth had got here first, and you'd apologized. I really didn't expect to see you dismissing anyone's religion out of hand (or conflating a list of ancient Germanic topics with neopaganism, but it was the religious dismissiveness that shocked me.) Yngvadottir (talk) 10:22, 8 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

I'm going to go ahead and jump in here and highlight that if @Cullen328: had made those blatantly discriminatory comments about any "major" religion his account would have been nuked out of orbit without a second thought, apology or not.

We need some changes on Wikipedia. Or at least a transparent hierarchy of what religions are acceptable for Wikipedia users to openly insult and discriminate against and which are not. :bloodofox: (talk) 22:17, 8 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

Bloodofox, please note that I agreed that I made a mistake and I apologized. Cullen328 (talk) 22:25, 8 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Cullen328:, thank you reconsidering your comments. I appreciate it. Although I don't think we have crossed paths before on the site before, I can see from the work you're doing that you're a great editor. I wish we had encountered one another here under happier circumstances. :bloodofox: (talk) 22:11, 9 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

Question from Derek J Moore (10:52, 8 August 2024)

edit

Hello Cullen. Quick question. I had a speedy delete of an article I was composing in my Sandbox. Is that normal practice? --Derek J Moore (talk) 10:52, 8 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hello, Derek J Moore. Yes, this is normal. Your sandbox was deleted for "unambiguous advertising or promotion". The policy language is at WP:G11. Promotional phrases like drive research and innovation and especially undertaking audacious research projects to enable global competitiveness are not permitted anywhere on Wikipedia. Cullen328 (talk) 16:29, 8 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thanks Cullen, I certainly do not believe such hyperbole. I do not buy the hype of higher education. It would have been modified in the sandbox before publication. Just surprised that people are looking at my sandbox. Isn't this where all the rough work gets done? Derek J Moore (talk) 19:47, 8 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
(talk page stalker) Derek J Moore, editors who patrol Special:RecentChanges and its derivative feeds will see edits made on any page on the project, including user sandboxes. Certain patterns of text may also trigger a logged entry by an edit filter, some of which have been designed to spot things like promotional or advertorial language. As you may imagine, the English Wikipedia is a tempting target for marketers and SEO types.
I'm not an admin, so I can't see the contents of your deleted sandbox, but it sounds from your comment just above that you may have been copypasting from your sources? Since all non-deleted revisions of all Wikipedia pages are publicly visible, we can't just copypaste text here and then modify it as we go: this is almost always a violation of the source's copyright licensing. In other words, user sandboxes are not before publication: if you have saved text into your Wikipedia user sandbox, it has been published, in the operational definition chosen by the site owners' legal department. Folly Mox (talk) 12:55, 10 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
Hello Folly Mox. Thank you very much for the comprehensive reply. I was not aware of Special:RecentChanges and I can see how that text combination would have triggered an alert. Derek J Moore (talk) 16:32, 10 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Folly Mox see my thanks above. I am still getting the syntax right. Explanation is appreciated Derek J Moore (talk) 16:36, 10 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

Cloud899, yes, assuming that the person is notable. There is an essay about this very thing, Wikipedia:Write the article first. You do not need the author disambiguator in the title, because there is no article about another Ashlan Chidester. Cullen328 (talk) 19:15, 12 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
