Virginia Tech Hokies Football Seasons FLC

Thanks for the helpful review! It's always nice to get a substantive critique, and I think I've addressed your concerns. Feel free to take another look, and if there are places where you think the article needs another citation for something that isn't covered in the list itself, throw down a fact tag and I'll replace it with a cite when I get a chance. Thanks again for taking the time to review it. If you ever need a reviewer yourself, drop me a note and I'll be happy to help. JKBrooks85 (talk) 03:23, 24 July 2008 (UTC)

Concern

Thanks for your concern. At the moment we have five or six lists a day being nominated. We have a few contributors (you are a major one) who offer excellent criticism on each list. Very few contributors !vote. While I'm keen to avoid promoting lists which aren't ready, the Hokies list (for example) had sufficient support for promotion, in my opinion. If not the case then I'm sure I'll be reminded of it very swiftly. A 20-list backlog is something which we must avoid and because the ten-day minimum stay has been reinforced, backlogs will become inevitable with 5/6 lists being added every day. You and Scorpion have similar opinions in this regard, and I understand that. I'll reconsider my position as FL director. Thanks for your note. The Rambling Man (talk) 18:05, 24 July 2008 (UTC)

Secondly, I take my reviews of these lists very seriously and would not wish to promote something I'm not happy with. After all, that's the point of me & Scorpion0422 being directors. Otherwise, it just goes back to the way it was months and months ago when average lists (yes, including some of my own for sure) made it through and we had a giant backlog which stopped people nominating and reviewing (I think there were three or four regular reviewers back then). Ultimately the directors have the responsibility of deciding when promotion is appropriate. You may note that I still thoroughly review virtually every candidate, so I'm not promoting lists for the hell of it. The Rambling Man (talk) 18:56, 24 July 2008 (UTC)
You think citation problems are being overlooked? Check out Mark Lanegan discography (the FLC and my archives). And Queens of the Stone Age discography. I think I'm doing more than anyone else in areas I'm not familiar with to check citations. With a magnifying glass. Anyway, point made. I'll do my best to avoid premature promotion, but I will end up failing/archiving lists quickly because FLC should not be a repository for PR wannabes. The Rambling Man (talk) 20:07, 24 July 2008 (UTC)
I think one problem we have right now is a large number of non-native English speakers (US contributors exempted of course!) and when they nom several lists of the same nature, it's a real challenge to balance AGF with pragmatism. Anyway, I take your point, I'll look more seriously at the quick-fail and try to be more lenient for those lists a day or two overdue. The Rambling Man (talk) 20:21, 24 July 2008 (UTC)

Major League Baseball Rookie of the Year Award

Hi Czych. Your comments at the FLC for the above list are still outstanding and I think they're valuable enough to prevent promotion. However, Milks Favorite Cookie has gone AWOL since 23 July after a failed RFA. Do you think you'd be prepared to implement your own suggestions or find someone who would, e.g. maclean? Broncos seasons

Do you have anymore feedback to give on the list before I renominate it? Buc (talk) 16:42, 28 July 2008 (UTC)

Blue Jays

Hi Czych. I've attempted to remedy the objections you have against the Blue Jays list. I've linked all seasons and coach names, and when sorting by #, the repeated tenures appear together now which I think seems logical, but if you disagree then I'll happily move it back out - if you make it numeric order then it'll sort identically to term which would imply that the # col should be unsortable. If you could have one last look at it and decide if you're happy to support, that'd be great. The Rambling Man (talk) 07:50, 29 July 2008 (UTC)

I'm not going to post this message on the nomination page because I don't think this issue deserves revocation of my support; however, I do want to make sure that you are familiar with this paragraph from WP:LINK:

Do not make too many links. An article may be overlinked if any of the following is true:…

(deletion mine)

A link for any single term is excessively repeated in the same article, as in the example of overlinking that follows: "Excessive" typically means more than once for the same term in an article. The purpose of links is to direct the reader to a new spot at a point where the reader is most likely to take a temporary detour due to a need for more information; this is usually on the first occurrence of the term, although the subsequent linking of an important item distant from its previous occurrence in an article may occasionally be appropriate in a table or in a subsection to which readers may jump directly, either within the article or via a section-link from another article.

KV5Squawk boxFight on! 12:42, 29 July 2008 (UTC)

KV5, on a sortable table, for the linking to be guaranteed to be "usually on the first occurrence of the term", all instances should be linked. In worst case scenarios, long, chronological, sortable tables could sort in reverse chronlogical order and your one link (which was at the top) is now no longer visible. That's why sortable tables link, link, link. The Rambling Man (talk) 13:00, 29 July 2008 (UTC)

Philadelphia Phillies managers

Now that the discussion has closed, I will be trying to make fixes to the article in a push for a second nomination. However, I would still appreciate some clarification on one point. As I understand your first unresolved point, you stated that sentences simply cannot start with "Of...". I beg to differ on this issue. The Bedford Handbook, a reputable and well-respected writing style guide, states that "a complex sentence is composed of one independent clause with one or more subordinate clauses." Using "of" to start an initial prepositional phrase, otherwise known as an adverb subordinate clause, is grammatically correct, and an example is given in the book ("If you scatter thorns, don't go barefoot."). It is also written in the same book that "to give unequal emphasis to two or more ideas, [one should] express the major idea in an independent clause and place any minor ideas in subordinate clauses or phrases." I will not presume to make assumptions about your reasoning; however, I would like to understand your point of view on this issue. KV5Squawk boxFight on! 16:39, 4 August 2008 (UTC)

What I wrote adheres exactly to the rules for subordinate clauses. The word "manager" may seem repetitive, but it was added in response to an earlier review because the numbers were previously next to each other. KV5Squawk boxFight on! 18:40, 4 August 2008 (UTC)

As you entered the first contest, you may be interested in taking a look at the new one, which will have different rules. Disputed non-free use rationale for File:13 Movie.jpg

Thank you for uploading File:13 Movie.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this file on Wikipedia may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the file description page and adding or clarifying the reason why the file qualifies under this policy. Adding and completing one of the templates available from Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your file is in compliance with Wikipedia policy. Please be aware that a non-free use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for files used under the non-free content policy require both a copyright tag and a non-free use rationale.

If it is determined that the file does not qualify under the non-free content policy, it might be deleted by an administrator within a few days in accordance with our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions, please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you. —Angr 12:12, 17 February 2009 (UTC)

New FL criteria discussion: Final phase

Hello, I think we've hammered out a good revised Featured List criteria here. If this passes, there will be quite a few FLs (my estimate is somewhere between 50 and 75) that could soon be delisted just because of 3b. With that in mind, I'd like to get comments and opinions from all FLC regulars and everyone else who has participated in the discussion before it's implemented. Could you look at this FLC? Your concerns have been addressed, Thanks—Chris! ct 18:42, 8 April 2009 (UTC)

that doesn't change the fact that tables in wikipedia use wikitable - Please show me that policy that requires it. WP:ACTOR uses a different style of table in its recommendation for filmographies. WP:FILM has not disallowed it in the awards lists that have been created. If you want to bring up the article for delisting, feel free, but there is no policy that I have found requires plain wikitable be used and if you had an issue with the table being used, then you should have brought that up in January. It passed FL using the table, it was discussed and passed with it. Does WP:BRD mean nothing to you or do you usually just revert back without discussing it? You removed absolutely all color in the table heading with change you made, leaving it plain and unattractive. Wildhartlivie (talk) 23:16, 12 April 2009 (UTC)

You actually weigh in at FLC with reasoning like "it is stupid"? That's not quite civil. There is nothing in the criteria for FLs that mandate the use of a specific table style either. Essentially, you don't like it and find it unattractive, that's subjective as well. Unless there is policy or criteria that mandates the table you put in, there is no valid reason that it use it. Wildhartlivie (talk) 00:08, 13 April 2009 (UTC)
It makes the border around the table appear darker, thus more congruent, with the dividing lines between each type of award in the table. I had a similar discussion at one point about how a table viewed on someone else's computer. Apparently it doesn't show a difference with some browsers but does so with others. What browser do you use? Wildhartlivie (talk) 06:32, 13 April 2009 (UTC)
Yes, I use Firefox. IE started crashing my computer a year or so ago and I've dumped it completely. I know a lot of tables look much differently depending on the browser. Myself, I think they look better on Firefox, but I'm sure others see it as the opposite. I have to say it takes a lot more insertion into the wikitable to get the color into the titles line of the table - an entry for each column vs. one entry at the line break about the titles! Wildhartlivie (talk) 06:54, 13 April 2009 (UTC)
That would be an issue if the colors were problematic for those with color-blindness, sure. I ran my colors through the tools to check for it, and it posed no problems. Meanwhile, there is the Golden Globe Award for Best Original Score FL. Although I know you supported the passing in 2007, those colors actually physically hurt my eyes. I have a vision disability (not related to color) and some combinations overwhelm them. That's a case where I think the color isn't necessary, the winners are already bolded. Personal preferences I suppose. Wildhartlivie (talk) 07:25, 13 April 2009 (UTC)

FLRC

Hey. Thanks for your note. I was a little surprised to see that I'd been nominated and subsequently elected FLRC director, particularly with my recent massive absence and then the on-going Arbcom in which I am likely to be berated for not pursuing correct dispute resolution methods. I have to admit that my real-life commitments combined with a heap of chagrin at the utter debacle in the date delinking Arbcom which will see us lose several good editors forever has forced me to reconsider my wiki-commitment. I never ever forwent my commitments to FLC as a director, nor did I underestimate my responsibilities as a bureaucrat, but since it's apparent that editors who have contributed massively to this project, free of charge, can be judged, sentenced and executed, leaving the project with a serious net loss, I'm thinking hard about all my commitments. Post-Arbcom "decision" delivery (theoretically end of May, but the case has been on-going for some five or so months...), I'll re-evaluate and let the community know.
