Legend of the Rainbow Warriors

Hi Corbie,

I've been researching the basis of this article for the last several hours. While I now believe that I stand somewhat corrected in that you were right that the Rainbow Tribe's claim of having a belief system that has "fully legitimate" Native American roots, is dubious at best, I still think that the article relies way too heavily on Michael Niman, whose observations, while of some value, are quite erroneous on some points. He claims that the foundational tract for the "Tribe" is a Christian tract. That is clearly erroneous. I bought a copy of the tract and skimmed through it. Nowhere does the tract mention the crucifixion, and it claims that the physical resurrection of Jesus was a hoax perpetrated by the Romans. Not exactly "Christian."

There can be no doubt that Michael Niman hasn't "done his homework" on this point, and quoting him in the article to this effect (that the tract is Christian) needs to go. In fact, it appears that in all probability Niman is most probably a Rainbow Tribe member himself, apparently taking an active part in their annual gatherings for the last 20 years or so, and he may be advocating for his own position within the group through his publications.

I can agree to continue to allow the "tone" of the article to "hint strongly" that the Native American basis of the Rainbow Tribe theology is quite flawed, but I see no reason not to also include the voices of Native American authors who would support the Rainbow Tribe's essentially harmless spirituality. The Rainbow Tribe is not "racist" in the sense of advocating hatred between races. They preach non-violence and the unity of mankind, and use a sort of homemade eclectic version of Native American shamanism to justify their preaching. I suppose you can call that racism if you may wish, but I will call it a well intended, but slightly unusual form of humanism, with a little oddly mixed spirituality stirred into the brew.

Whether one uses the cause of "humanism" or of "spirituality" to justify their desire to be peaceful and helpful to their fellow man, makes no difference to me. In either case Wikipedia need not act disparagingly and mockingly towards the movement. It need only point out facts, and can point out facts on both sides of the debate without doing any harm to anyone, and possibly do someone some good. If the article is able to show its impartiality, the Rainbow Tribe folks who may be lost in their odd theology, may tend to read the article a little more seriously, than if the entire article is written like a tract and a diatribe against them.

The Niman bit about them really being "Christians in disguise" needs to go.

Thanks,

Scott P. (talk) 07:14, 7 October 2017 (UTC)

PS: One more thing that strikes me about this article is Wikipedia's inherent "racism," if you will, towards native peoples, that seems to me to be subconsciously demonstrated throughout this article. Please let me explain. I have attempted to do my best, to view this article through the eyes of a Native American, in the hopes of maybe making Wikipedia more helpful for Native Americans. Through such eyes, this is how I see the article as it is currently written: The article reads as a bunch of young white dudes debating amongst themselves what they believe a true "Native American" ought to be. I don't see a single bona fide Native American author or voice being cited or authentically "accurately" expressed as a reference in the article!
You are certainly correct that there are indeed Native American authors who abhor what the Rainbow Tribe is doing, but none of them are cited in the article and I see no reason why these anti-Rainbow Tribe Native American authors couldn't be cited. So should the pro-Rainbow Tribe Native American authors be cited as well. The Rainbow Tribe is neither all good, nor all bad, and in my not so humble opinion, while according to current WP policy, we can certainly "judge in favor of" the anti-Rainbow Tribe authors within the article, that doesn't mean that we also have to "silence" the pro-Rainbow Tribe Native American voice, only that we need to allow "precedence" to the anti-Rainbow Tribe voice.
Scott P. (talk) 16:12, 7 October 2017 (UTC)
PPS: By the way, I would call Wikipedia's systematic subconscious preference for citing European type authors as "subconscious ethnocentric bias," not "racism." Two very different things when considering underlying intentions, no? Scott P. (talk) 16:34, 7 October 2017 (UTC)
The Legend of the Rainbow Warriors article is not about the hippie group, The Rainbow Family, it's about the fakelore itself, which has been traced to that book as the source. So you misunderstand when you write that Niman is calling that particular hippie group, "Christian." The book and the legend have Christian underpinnings, as opposed to Indigenous ones; the point of the fake prophechy is anti-Indigenous and evangelical. The issue is not whether it fits your preferred subset of Christianity, but that the legend does not have an Indigenous origin. There are some legends that have similar names and motifs (a rainbow, for instance), but those legends do not contain the central, harmful message that white people will replace Indigenous people in their own lands and cultures. That is the essence of the fakelore prophecy.
Re-read the article about the Legend again, on its own merits, without mistakenly assuming the book was written about the hippie group. Members of Wikiproject Indigenous work on the article, myself included, and Indigenous writers are quoted in the article. Also, if it takes you over thirty edits to compose a message on someone's talk page, please compose that message offline before posting it on a Wikipedian's talk page. Your edit here resulted in thirty email notifications. This has the effect of spamming an editor's inbox and may be perceived as disruptive editing. - CorbieV 17:26, 7 October 2017 (UTC)

Scott P. Hi! Indigenous person here. Please don't speak for my community. Especially in attempting to defend large scale appropriation. Thx. Indigenous girl (talk) 17:31, 7 October 2017 (UTC)

Yep. - CorbieV 17:55, 7 October 2017 (UTC)
Striking my earlier comment about adding more "Rainbow Family" content to the fake Prophecy article. There's no reason to cater to lack of reading comprehension. The fake prophecy applies to all sorts of groups. The specific groups that have their own issues are addressed in those specific articles. - CorbieV 17:54, 7 October 2017 (UTC)

Scott P. You said,"I see no reason why these anti-Rainbow Tribe Native American authors couldn't be cited" did you even look at the sources? Why do you assume this fake myth has anything to do with the Rainbow Family? They are two distinct articles. Why should fake sources be included? How is that remotely beneficial to indigenous peoples? Indigenous girl (talk) 18:27, 7 October 2017 (UTC)

Clarification on discussion in the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women Wiki page

Your comment was moved to the appropriate section on that same Talk page. The edit you want to make are the same as made by another editor in August 2016. The only difference between your comments and the previous editor's comments is that you cite a CBC article and the previous editor cited a BBC article. The content of both the CBC article and BBC article are the same. The section that this argument occurred in is titled "Dispute over number of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women". I have verified with the Native Women's Association of Canada's website the information that they cited in 2016. So, what is the new point of view to this argument that you would like to bring?DivaNtrainin (talk) 21:30, 22 October 2017 (UTC)

If you want to discuss blocking, let's do it on your Talk page. Before you start lecturing anyone on [Wikipedia:Blocking policy|Wikipedia's blocking policy], then read about it first. Since you have been spending more time criticizing my behaviour then talking about the topic at hand (i.e. Missing and murdered Indigenous women), it reminds me of the tactics of Donald Trump. Seriously, this is EXACTLY what he does. Distract you with personal attacks rather than discuss the topic at hand. It makes me even wonder. Do you even care about Missing and murdered Indigenous women, because if you did, you would spend more time talking about how to improve the Wikipedia article, then lecturing someone about a policy that you don't even know about.DivaNtrainin (talk) 23:23, 25 October 2017 (UTC)

This message is being sent to let you know of a discussion at the Wikipedia:Dispute resolution noticeboard regarding a content dispute discussion you may have participated in. Content disputes can hold up article development and make editing difficult for editors. You are not required to participate, but you are both invited and encouraged to help this dispute come to a resolution. Please join us to help form a consensus. Thank you! Robert McClenon (talk) 22:24, 28 October 2017 (UTC)

The filer never notified anyone and the DR was closed. The editor has engaged in tendentious editing, personal attacks, and misrepresentation of their actions. The flawed DR was more of the same. - CorbieV 18:16, 29 October 2017 (UTC)
Your silence is being taken as consent for my suggestions. If I don't get some feedback, one way or another on the Talk:Missing and murdered Indigenous women page, then I will start editing the page tomorrow. You can still provide feedback, but at this point, it can be argued that consensus has been reached, and I will start editing as per OwlsMcGee suggested.DivaNtrainin (talk) 23:20, 28 October 2017 (UTC)
Silence is not consent. No one is required to drag this out with you. You are a tendentious POV-pusher.
Owls McGee did not suggest either continued discussion, nor did they support your edits. We agreed the text with both figures is sourced to WP:RS standards, is relevant, and should stand.
You simply repeated yourself on the talk page. You offered zero compromise. No one agreed with you. You are still editing against consensus. No one is required to repeat themselves endlessly.
Consensus is to include both figures in lede. You are the only one who wants to exclude all but the police figures.
Read the sources and the talk page again more carefully. Read WP policies again more carefully. You are grossly misrepresenting all of the above, as you have in the past, and you have been blocked in the past for doing exactly what you are doing now. Personal attacks and edit-warring are not an attempt to reach consensus. Nor is endlessly repeating yourself and badgering others in an attempt to wear other editors down. Removing the warnings from your page is further disruption, not clearing your slate. - CorbieV 18:16, 29 October 2017 (UTC)

ANI Experiences survey

Beginning on November 28, 2017, the Wikimedia Foundation Community health initiative (Safety and Support and Anti-Harassment Tools team) will be conducting a survey to en.wikipedia contributors on their experience and satisfaction level with the Administrator’s Noticeboard/Incidents. This survey will be integral to gathering information about how this noticeboard works - which problems it deals with well, and which problems it struggles with.

The survey should take 10-20 minutes to answer, and your individual responses will not be made public. The survey is delivered through Google Forms. The privacy policy for the survey describes how and when Wikimedia collects, uses, and shares the information we receive from survey participants and can be found here:

ArbCom 2017 election voter message

Hello, CorbieVreccan. Voting in the 2017 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23.59 on Sunday, 10 December. All users who registered an account before Saturday, 28 October 2017, made at least 150 mainspace edits before Wednesday, 1 November 2017 and are not currently blocked are eligible to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2017 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 18:42, 3 December 2017 (UTC)

Whether "Squaw" is a racist term

I changed the opening of the Squaw article to include the idea that it is seen by some as racist. The word has a non-racist etymology. It has been deemed to be racist by some in recent years. But that does not change its origin, nor does it automatically include all uses of it. The position that it is a racist term is held very strongly by some, but that does not automatically make all uses of it racist. Pete unseth (talk) 22:45, 7 December 2017 (UTC)

St. Joseph's Indian School

Hi Corbie,

I would like to disagree with you about my changes being deemed as promotional. I am in fact, a bit of a critic of their fundraising. But, I have looked into this school and the wikipedia page is biased without including the full story...even the history is incorrect. So, I was trying to flesh out the entire controversy. I am new to this and am unsure how to add the new info, fix the clearly wrong parts, and add the references needed to allow show. Can you tell me how to make the changes in the most constructive way possible? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Historian1868 (talkcontribs) 02:12, 19 December 2017 (UTC)

Question on Frybread Barnstar Award

Hi Corbie, I am a student completing research contextualizing the Dakota Access Pipeline protests. I saw that you gave Gandydancer the Frybread Barnstar award in September of 2016 for their contributions to the article. I am wondering how you were able to do this. Can any contributor of the article give the award, or were you specially able to give the award because of your long and impressive history contributing to Wikipedia? I appreciate whatever help you may have for me. Thank you! Hgaba (talk) 14:47, 12 January 2018 (UTC)

There used to be an official wikiproject for approving barnstars, but it became cumbersome. Still, reading up on barnstars on WP will give a sense of the history of them. I made the award for Indigenous articles, and would like it to be used by members of the North American Indigenous wikiproject. - CorbieV 16:42, 12 January 2018 (UTC)

  • The autoconfirmed article creation trial (ACTRIAL) is scheduled to end on 14 March 2018. The results of the research collected can be read on Meta Wiki.
  • Community ban discussions must now stay open for at least 24 hours prior to being closed.
  • A change to the administrator inactivity policy has been proposed. Under the proposal, if an administrator has not used their admin tools for a period of five years and is subsequently desysopped for inactivity, the administrator would have to file a new RfA in order to regain the tools.
  • A change to the banning policy has been proposed which would specify conditions under which a repeat sockmaster may be considered de facto banned, reducing the need to start a community ban discussion for these users.

  Technical news

  • CheckUsers are now able to view private data such as IP addresses from the edit filter log, e.g. when the filter prevents a user from creating an account. Previously, this information was unavailable to CheckUsers because access to it could not be logged.
  • The edit filter has a new feature contains_all that edit filter managers may use to check if one or more strings are all contained in another given string.

Sorry, I'm not good with this.

But here: http://www.imdb.com/name/nm2080328/bio?ref_=nm_ov_bio_sm and here: http://www.pechanga.net/content/eastern-band-cherokee-indians-says-wind-river-and-yellowstone-actress-not-enrolled-nor-desce are my sources.

I didn't feel like the original statement gave enough information. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Krilloilbob (talkcontribs) 02:58, 11 March 2018 (UTC)

OK, since IMDb isn't sourced, and anyone can edit it, on Wikipedia we add IMDb down in the external links section, but it can't be used as an WP:RS-level, inline, "reliable source." The Pechanga article is already cited as a source in the article, as it's one of the places the official Cherokee statement that she is not Cherokee was published. The only mention of Taiwanese therein was their quote from the inaccurate New York Times article. Given the misinformation already found in the Times article, I would not rely on anything in that article for this topic. The Pechanga and Cherokee responses had to be written largely in response to the misinformation in that article. It seems the New York times writer did not do due diligence, and most likely simply repeated the misinformation in her press kit, or something similar. It's not the only time something like this has happened, unfortunately. I am not an expert on her career or family, and only came in to fact-check on the Cherokee claim. I don't know if anyone has done research on her father. - CorbieV 22:37, 11 March 2018 (UTC)

Your revert hardly needs to go the talk page because it is well cited within the article in the last paragraph of the Name section. I thought you should know in case you missed it. Cheers ww2censor (talk) 21:17, 27 March 2018 (UTC)
