Stephens City FAC

Others have asked about an economy section. At the time, I was unaware of US Census information was available. With that information now in hand (well, on the internet) I have constructed an "Economy" section. I would like your opinion on that section as you have brought up points on the FAC already. I don't think peer review is the right forum for resolving disputes. As the peer reviewer, you state what you think needs fixing in an article. If the nominating editor chooses to ignore what you say, that's up to him/her. PR is not a judgemental process. In this case, I agree that the chosen structure causes difficulties with the chronology, and you have pointed this out. I don't think there is much else you can do in this respect, though there are other faults with the article that you could mention, if minded. Brianboulton (talk) 22:47, 29 July 2010 (UTC)

I'm not sure what the "Wikipedias Comics Participants group site" is, or where to find it, but if this is some sort of group project I imagine you will find help there. Meanwhile, here are a couple of tips for free:-

• Citations need to give specific support to statements made in the article. For example, the statement "In the late 1970s, while continuing his work in the field of advertising, Harris completed his Bachelor of Science degree in Communications (evening studies) through Empire State College in New York" is not supported by a cite to the College's website. There are other cases of the same.
• Wikipedia pages, e.g. Hyperrealism (painting), cannot be cited as sources by other Wikipedia articles.

I repeat: citations must support information given in the article. If you want to cite your father's attendance at Empire State College, you need to find a page that confirms his attendance. That is the general principle of citation. Likewise, the statement that "Harris continued his lifelong passion to paint Still Lifes and Portraits with oils—moving further towards developing his style of hyperrealism" needs a citation to a source supporting that fact, not to a definition of hyperrealism. As a final tip, you should not refer to your subject throughout as "Harris"; that is not encyclopedic. That really I all the help I can give. Brianboulton (talk) 09:09, 2 August 2010 (UTC)

Re: Greenland map request

I have only been looking at diffs of my talk page and so missed your map request until a short time ago. I would be glad to try and make a map, but cannot really read the details on File:NansenGreenlandrevisedMap.jpg‎ - do you have a higher resolution scan? More importantly, could you tell me what features need to be labeled? I think that two paths in two colors would be very possible. How detailed does the planned route line have to be? Would a straight line across Greenland between the start and end points work? Any preferences for the three colors for the three lines (the Fram map has red, green, blue, purple, and yellow)? Red, green and blue would probably be easiest, perhaps blue for the ocean journey, red for the plan, and green for the actual trip? The journey line should be not quite straight; on leaving Umivik Nansen initially struck out north-west for Christianhaab, then changed direction after a few days when he realised that Christianhaab could not be reached in the time available. The journey line should reflect this, but it isn't necessary to show other details. I'm happy with your choices of colours for the lines. Thanks, but I wouldn't bother creating a better resolution for the old map; once your new version is uploaded, the old won't have any function as far as I can see. I watch your page and am fine with having the discussion here, thanks. I can follow the book map for the actual journey lines (both on sea and across land). Yes, the projected journey should be a straight line. Since the interior was unexplored they had no way of knowing what they would actually encounter, so they assumed (hopefully) the shortest distance between two points! Brianboulton (talk) 20:26, 1 August 2010 (UTC)

The map is as always excellent. Just a couple of suggestions:-

• I think the green line should continue along the fjord to Godthaab, otherwise the impression may be given that the party didn't make it.
• Would it be possible for the beginning of the blue line to be broken, to differentiate between the voyage in Jason and the journey in open boats up and down the coast? The broken part of the line should end above the "e" in "Sermilik". All explanation will be given in the caption.

I hope these amendments won't present too much difficulty. If the broken blue line is problematic another colour (yellow?) might be used instead. Brianboulton (talk) 16:33, 7 August 2010 (UTC)

I continued the line along the north shore of the fjord to Godthaab - the journey line in the original map ended at the fjord, so I originally followed that. I also made the blue line dotted as far as the "e". SInce your excellent articles often are translated into other languages, I also made an unlabeled version which could have lables added in other languages. Tosca at TFA/R

I'm uncertain if you noticed, but I put up Tosca in the nonspecific slot at TFA/R, where it has attracted modest support.

If you are ever minded to return to Puccini (obviously were are both busy with other projects), I rather think Gianni Schicchi would be fun to do. It probably would not be a hugely long article, I did some work on it a long time ago although it is little more than a stub (for all the opera nuts around WP, the state of the articles is appalling), and I think references and images would not be an insurmountable problem. Possibly a freebie audio file of the only aria anyone ever mentions could be found. Perhaps late in the year, if it appeals to you? Tosca TFA noted. What was the last TFA opera? If it was G&S that doesn't count. As to Gianni Schicchi, it could no doubt be done, but if I am to participate, the question is when? My schedule (as always, not immutable) is Nansen (current), followed by L'Orfeo, then most probably Evelyn Waugh, then Pietro Mascagni, then (I thought) Nixon in China. Schicchi is a tiddler, and could perhaps be fitted in between Waugh and Mascagni, October/Novemberish. Progress depends on how much relief I can get from reviewing duties. Now that Ealdgyth is back, I am sharing sources reviewing at FAC, but PR is getting seriously gridlocked and I have to help out there. And I have a couple of holidays coming up... Associated articles now, the '58 election and WP has no coverage of his parents, brother (who was quite a character) and only limited coverage of his wives. When reviewing sources, I am not able to support or oppose, since I am not looking at other parts of the article. The "sources OK" is a health check that all FACs must have, regardless of the number of supports they get. Likewise, you need an "images OK" report. Supports normally come for content reviews, which have been lacking so far on this nomination. I will put a note on the WP:FAC talkpage, asking for comments on the article's content. H.R. Gray

I made the suggested changes to the H.R. Gray page, per your notes. I cleaned up the references a bit and repurposed many of them, as well as cleaned up the flow of the sections by adding a History section and reorganizing the language in each section. In addition, I removed many of the H.R. Gray references, since they were not necessary in the first place. I changed the heading titles to reflect Wikipedia standards, as mentioned, as well as took citations out of the headers.

You've probably done enough to justify removing the tag, but there seems to be quite a lot more you can do to improve the article. For example, removal of bullet point style; proper formatting of references (incidentally you should not use other Wikipedia articles as sources); prose/spelling check ("memeber"). The present GAN looks in a confused state; it is not actually clear if the reviewer has formally withdrawn and he/she seems to have little idea of the procedure. Hi, Brian. I've had another look at Wikipedia:Peer_review/Fred_Shero/archive1 and Fred Shero and think Fred Shero is as far from GA as ever. Am I being too hard? My concerns are:

• IMO there's still much stuff that is superfluous.
• The article's starting level of prose is so poor that I fear |Mo Rock...Monstrous has no hear it. If so, the usual method I recommend (try as many attempts as possible on the same 10 sentences, and see what works best; then try another 10 sentences) looks unlikely to work. -Philcha (talk) 10:32, 14 August 2010 (UTC)
