Ok, thanks, especially for links. Brandmeister

Hi! English, Latin and Polish is one of the more exotic combinations of secondary languages I've ever seen :D Of course, I assume Polish wasn't *too* difficult to learn for you as a Russian? I have a Polish girlfriend (who speaks German and English fluently), and she has this Russian fetish; apparently all things Russian are either really cute or really funny to her. Her parents (who were rather active in the resistance movement of the 80s ;p) don't like that idea very much, but basically they're just amused.

You say you like good science fiction; I haven't read any science fiction in a long while (unless you count H. G. Wells and Vonnegut). What would you recommend to me?

--Bringa 13:09, 27 July 2005 (UTC)

Yes, I think when you know any Slavic language it's easier to study Polish. But many words with similar pronunciation have different meanings. It's because not many Poles like Russian language:) I improved language when I was in Krakow for about 8 months. I like especially "technical" SF (recommend William Keith "Warstrider" [in 4 volumes], Aldous Huxley "Brave New World" or Tom Godwin "Mother of Invention") and don't much like socialistic SF. New articles

Dear Brandmeister, don't forget to announce new Russia-related articles here. Best wishes, Ghirlandajo 09:23, 9 August 2005 (UTC)

Ælia Capitolina additions

I see you made extensive additions to this article, but did not supply any sources. Please review the Wikipedia guidelines on citing sources. What specifically makes me wonder about your additions is that "the Madaba Map" is cited, whatever that is, and then it says "shown above"...and there's no map shown above! Did you cut and paste these additions somewhence? If so, this must be cited. Regards, Tomer TALK 21:40, August 15, 2005 (UTC)

I cited http://www.bibarch.com/glossary/MI/ColoniaAeliaCapitolina.htm but missed that sentence while checking. Now it's OK. Brandmeister 17:14, 19 August 2005 (UTC)

wonder-working

Dear Brandmeister, you have deleted a link for wonder-working icons from Our Lady of Kursk. I think it would be a nice idea to make an article about "чудотворные иконы", to enlist them, and finally to make a separate article for each of them. (An article with a list is better in this case than a one more category I think. But maybe I'm not right). What do you think about it? Or maybe you know the better translation for "чудотворная икона"? Arseni 20:26, 3 September 2005 (UTC)

Yes, I think we should create, but it seems that "miraculous icon" is more relevant in e.g. Google. However other terms of that type such as "равноапостольный" is too hard to translate :) Brandmeister 19:48, 4 September 2005 (UTC)
I think such terms as 'равноапостольный' should be borrowings from Greek, so we should look for a Greek term. Shoudn't we? Arseni 09:13, 5 September 2005 (UTC)
Actually I don't know - it seems that transliterations are often used. In that case I've noticed one English ("ranking with the apostles") and one Spanish ("el igual de los apóstoles") translation which are equivalent. Brandmeister 19:27, 5 September 2005 (UTC)

Glucuronic acid pathway image and text

Hi, I just noticed that image:Glucuronic.png was copied from [1], as was much of the text on glucuronic acid. Do we have permission to use that image and text? Thanks, AxelBoldt 19:55, 18 September 2005 (UTC)

Yes, see below in this link: "Permission is granted to freely copy this document in electronic form... On the WWW, however, you must link..." I think if we put the link into the article it will be OK. Brandmeister 20:02, 18 September 2005 (UTC)

Lovozero Lake references

Hi - Thanks for creating the article on Lovozero Lake. Can you add a "references" section with links to where the material came from (perhaps http://www.grida.no/ecora/pdfb/rfrs/rfrmurm0202.doc?). Note that straight copy and paste from other websites should generally be avoided, although using websites for factual material is fine. -- Rick Block (talk) 20:22, 18 September 2005 (UTC)

I translated from the Soviet Encyclopedia (БСЭ) on the whole, but the annual fluctuations and the average period of water renewal are taken from that link. Brandmeister 20:35, 18 September 2005 (UTC)

Image Tagging Image:Version 2.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Version 2.jpg. I notice it currently doesn't have an image copyright tag, so its copyright status is therefore unclear. Please add a tag to let us know its copyright status. (If you created/took the picture then you can use {{gfdl}} to release it under the GFDL. If you can claim fair use use {{fairuse}}.) See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use. If you have uploaded other images, please check that you have tagged them, too. Note that any unsourced and untagged imaged will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thanks so much. --Michael 07:15, 1 October 2005 (UTC)

Now it may be under the fair use, as the website is apparently copyrighted. Brandmeister 10:20, 1 October 2005 (UTC)

Oleg Lundstrem

Where did you see an announcement of his death? I cannot find in on 'net. mikka (t) 22:11, 14 October 2005 (UTC)

In "Yandex. News". Apparently the announcement will spread soon. Brandmeister 09:58, 15 October 2005 (UTC)
Sorry, what is a correct form of his surname? In Russia he is spelled as Л'ундстрем (federal) or Лундстр'ем (Kazan pronounciation), but not Лундстрём --Untifler 18:11, 15 October 2005 (UTC)
Я это знаю точно, т.к. Олег Лундстрем познакомил моих бабушку и дедушку :)
Это вроде шведская фамилия, т.е. по-моему "ё" должно быть. Но где правильное ударение - точно не знаю. Brandmeister 10:33, 16 October 2005 (UTC)
Да, это известный факт, но практически везде его фамилия пишется и произносится через "е", да и сам он произносил её так. Даже если там и ё, то почему там перечёркнутое о - шведский же использует о-умляут, а перечеркнутое о- это в датском. --Untifler 14:50, 16 October 2005 (UTC)

Recategorising haematology

Just wondering why you are suddenly recategorising all sorts of haematology articles. What makes you think that anaplastic large cell lymphoma is a "blood disorder"? JFW | T@lk 16:22, 12 January 2006 (UTC)

I saw Villamor N et al. Anaplastic large-cell lymphoma with rapid evolution to leukemic phase (1999) and Bayle C et al. Leukaemic presentation of small cell variant anaplastic large cell lymphoma and it eventually has a heterogeneous character. Brandmeister 16:37, 12 January 2006 (UTC)

As both articles indicate, it is not normally a blood problem. JFW | T@lk 17:46, 12 January 2006 (UTC)

I have to agree with JFW here...as I am finding out as a medical student, the nature of many disease states is extremely complex, and such bold recategorization is probably better left to an expert in the field.--Jfurr1981 22:59, 12 January 2006 (UTC)

Image:Romul Avgustul.gif copyright

Hi. Maybe you need to add more copyright informations to Image:Romul Avgustul.gif. --Panairjdde 14:00, 30 January 2006 (UTC)

The site gives no copyright info on image and no name for artist. I've added {Non-free fair use in} tag just in case. Brandmeister 15:45, 30 January 2006 (UTC)
I don't think this is compliant with WP policies. You are adding an image you don't know anything about. Maybe it would be better to remove it? --Panairjdde 16:03, 30 January 2006 (UTC)
It's also possible to temporarily put {Don't know} tag as experienced editor should help determine the status of image or delete it within a week. Brandmeister 16:10, 30 January 2006 (UTC)

This media may be deleted.

Thanks for uploading Image:Madaba map.jpg. I notice the 'image' page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is therefore unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use {{GFDL}} to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media qualifies as fair use, please read fair use, and then use a tag such as {{Non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

You were kind enough to support the FAC candidacy of my article on Katie Holmes, for which I am grateful. You are mistaken [2]

Now the term is used mainly in the Commonwealth of Independent States (except Estonia where the term is officially forbidden and Uzbekistan which prefers to use the term World War II

1. Estonia has never been a member of Commonwealth of Independent States, thus there can be no talk of 'with the exception of Estonia'.

2. The term is allowed in Estonia (we do not have any censorship here), but native Estonians simply do not use the term coined by the Soviet authorities. Of course, our inhabitants of Russian origins continue using such phrases, as they find those suitable.

I would be grateful if you removed these erraneous and misleading notions. Constanz - Talk 15:47, 9 March 2006 (UTC)

Thank you for giving the source, it is reasonable to take in consideration that such nonsense is published. I haven't bothered myself with reading these yet, but I may assure you that whatever their claims of 'forbidden use', this is pure nonsense. One fourth of the population of Estonia probably continue using the terms and they have every right for that. Constanz - Talk 13:27, 10 March 2006 (UTC)

Image copyright problem with Image:Detsl.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Detsl.jpg. However, the image may soon be deleted unless we can determine the copyright holder and copyright status. The Wikimedia Foundation is very careful about the images included in Wikipedia because of copyright law (see Wikipedia's Copyright policy).

The copyright holder is usually the creator, the creator's employer, or the last person who was transferred ownership rights. Copyright information on images is signified using copyright templates. The three basic license types on Wikipedia are open content, public domain, and fair use. Find the appropriate template in Wikipedia:Image copyright tags and place it on the image page like this: {{TemplateName}}.

Please signify the copyright information on any other images you have uploaded or will upload. Remember that images without this important information can be deleted by an administrator. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me, or ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Oh, and I tried to babelfish the source info so I could apply a copyright tag without bothering you, but babelfish kept on erroring out. --Hetar 04:21, 11 May 2006 (UTC)

Terminology

"Okrug" is translated for higher-level divisions, such as federal districts and autonomous districts, because it is common practice and obviously makes sense. For lower-level divisions, translation is often impossible or harmful. Selsoviet, for example, can be translated in a number of ways, many of which would include the word "district". Normally this is not a problem if one is talking just about selsovets, just about raions, etc., but when such ambiguous terminology is employed across the whole hierarchy , it becomes confusing to both readers and editors and eventually leads to inconsistency and chaos. I've been working on Russian administrative divisions for over a year now, and although I did a great deal and standardized quite a lot, there is still plenty to do. As all Wikipedia articles are interrelated, and none really is meant to be standalone (which is why we have categories), it is much preferrable to utilize consistent terminology across the board. I am very willing to compromise when a compromise obviously benefits the readers, but in this case I just don't see that it does. The term "district" is used so often because when an administrative division type is looked at individually, that term is usually the first that comes to mind. Compare one administrative division type to another, and it's only natural to one district, say, "administrative", and the other "municipal". Now try to fit that into the bigger scheme (administrative divisions of the whole country from both modern and historical perspective), and you will be lost in "districts" in a very short time. I hope this makes sense to you—please let me know if I confused you to death.

Now, as for "Tsentralny" vs. "Central"—I am not against the latter at all. The reason why I prefer using the former, however, is because administrative okrugs of Moscow are on the same administrative level as raions of other federal subjects, and the names of those are transliterated, not translated. Why? Because the names of raions are not always translatable. See a discussion at Talk:Pavlovsk (disambiguation). For consistency sake, I transliterated the Moscow administrative okrugs' names, so I would be able to bundle them with raions for disambiguation purposes. Very selfish, but efficient, and I intend to keep it that way until the project is completed. Of course, like you said, redirects (either way) will work fine.

Hope I addressed your concerns. Please let me know if you need further clarification. I believe that if you look at the bigger picture you will understand why the naming scheme I use is what it is. Cheers!—Ëzhiki (ërinacëus amurënsis) • (yo?); 20:25, 11 May 2006 (UTC)
