It's all great test of patience of course, but hopefully there is progress. As a rule we are good at picking up on style and I fear fairly weak on substance. Perhaps for next April Fool's I'll come up with a GA on a completely invented island or similar. It might take quite a while for anyone to notice. No or at least not yet - all of the ones they have done are here. Most of the "mountains" in Pennsylvania are either actually dissected plateau (Allegheny Plateau) or very long ridges (60 km long or more, Ridge-and-Valley Appalachians). Speaking of the latter, I am trying to teach myself more geology for the neverending FAC and learned reading "Roadside Geology of Pennsylvania" that "The Caledonian Mountains of Great Britain, eastern Greenland and northeastern Scandanavia were originally contiguous with the Appalachians." so I'll say hello to some of your cousins Ruhrfisch _><>°^° 19:56, 21 April 2008 (UTC)

What's H Smith? Anyway, the source is the Sabhal Mòr database (http://www.smo.uhi.ac.uk/gaidhlig/faclair/sbg/lorg.php), the place name for Foula having been provided to them by Dr Iain Mac an Tàilleir of the Scottish Place Name Soc (he's the chap who provides the Scottish Government with the official Gaelic names of places), not sure how you'd reference that though. I'm afraid my Gaelic is all but non-existent. I can find Foula and I can see that Dr T is Faic Tùsan No 49, but when I choose 49 it just takes me to a page of 'A's with no obvious way forward. How do I connect Foula with 49? Ben MacDui^Talk/Walk 21:55, 3 April 2008 (UTC)

No problem, it's tricky maneuvering a site not in a language you can read :b I don't think there is a way of creating a link that has Foul Fughlaigh and 49 Dr T on it by default (or even directly to the Foula entry), the website doesn't work like that. What you're getting when you click on 49 is a list of all the entries provided by Dr T (starting with the A's). I'd just link it to the site and leave people to figure it out. I found my comment, here: User_talk:Mais_oui!#RE:BSW. I'm really sick to the teeth of wikipedia and all its daft editors. If one was actually going to nanny every crank on this site, you wouldn't have time for a life let alone do anything productive on the site. And the thing about crackpot fringe theories is that proper academics never respond to them, so you never get easy to cite debunkings. Orkney and Shetland seem to be one of the biggest magnets of all for this madness. I've heard everything, from Picts who stay'd there only in the summer, to Scandinavian oghams and now to English before they ever existed. Help?

I'm tidying up a page (Usurbil) at the moment that someone ran through Babelfish... Ive added an infobox and I'd like to add a label for % of Basque speakers (as the Basque and Spanish versions have) but I just can't get it to work. I've currently added it as a footnote but that doesn't work very well... you couldn't give me a pointer on how to add a label for Density of Basque Speakers to such a box? Thanks. Yes they are 'pre-set'. The 'subst' unsets it and allows you to manipulate it, but it can get quite tricky. I think you would be better off asking at Template talk:Infobox Settlement. Ben MacDui^Talk/Walk 18:33, 17 April 2008 (UTC)

Big, grey and very fearful

You're right, it is "am Fear ..." rather than "an Fear". I think the article should mention the Yeti thing in passing, because although some people think it represents the same phenomenon (whatever that is!), it's not the most populat theory. Westerners tend to see yeti and sasquatch as animals, rather than guardian spirits/genii loci (sp?) as am Fear Liath is, and sasquatch amongst the Indians. --MacRusgail (talk) 13:50, 20 April 2008 (UTC)

Why did you revert my edits? They weren't questionable changes. The way it is now (with your revert) has a political sentence mixed with a geography statement. A quick glance at the Archive Summary and talk page will show you that there have been screeds of discussion about the wording of the lead. In my view, the only way to avoid constant edit wars on this page is for users to propose and discuss controversial changes before they are implemented. No, it was about Paul Lister and his plans to reintroduce various types of megafauna back into the country. The stuff I found interesting was the claim that only 5 centuries ago the Highlands were covered in forest (though that's not exactly what medieval sources say in my own knowledge). RE:Evil Empire

What do you think of Scotland in the Iron Age? Bit wooly, but gives more chronological flexibility and reduces the chance of overlap if you move on to other topics. Creates a clear division between other prehistoric topics, such as Scotland in the Bronze Age, where factors like the Romans aren't so conveniently present. Proper coverage in any case would involve discussing a longer earlier period as the Roman era won't make sense otherwise. This is a very complicated and deep subject btw. What kind of resources do you have for it if I may ask? :) You've got the brains to deal with it no doubt, the biggest problem might be resources. Well part of the problem with the Iron Age is knowing when it begins. At least the Romans had the decency to arrive and leave in some sort of organised and verifiable way. Template help

I saw your recent edits to Template:Europe topic and I am hoping you can help with a small but irritating technical problem. We use an assessment template for WikiProject Scottish Islands - Template:WPSI. It comes with a 'comments' section, but there is an annoying glitch. The talk page of an article without a comment on the template (e.g. Whisky Galore) works fine. When you click on the "leave comments here" link it takes you to Editing Talk:Whisky Galore/Comments to leave whatever message may be required. However, for an article with a pre-existing comment e.g. at Talk:Lunga, Firth of Lorn clicking on the "edit" button in the WPSI template takes you to a "Server not found" error page. If you can fix this, tell me how to fix it, or suggest someone who might I'd be very grateful. Ben MacDui^Talk/Walk 11:18, 9 May 2008 (UTC)

Why not have the rating discussions on the regular talk page of each article? That way, anyone reading the discussion page will find it and may be more likely to participate. As it currently stands, a user has to click on a tiny link in a footnote of a notice box, which may reduce the number of participants. I look forward to your reply. Didn't spot your reply because the message alert feature of Wikipedia only works if you reply on the other person's talk page. Didn't expect that you'd require a request to reply on my talk page with every single post in the same message thread. To expedite a conversation, it is best to reply on each others' talk pages. Otherwise it just circumvents the alert feature. I almost never check back on threads, and returned here to report on my progress: I went ahead and fixed the template by removing transclusion - it makes little sense to transclude the comments in fine print - vision gets worse as you get older, so older (and wiser) Wikipedians won't even be able to read the comments. It forces a refresh of the page (and all nested pages) from the database itself, thereby purging the server cache - or something like that. :) It's mainly intended for pages hosting nested pages that get updated or worked on often, as different users may see different versions unless you "purge the cache". I added it while working on the page. It will be useful if anyone wants to further improve the template, or update the ratings. Bio nomenclature

You're wading into an old, bitter debate here. This matter remains undecided because, basically, we're all too stubborn to change our habits. It is probably the biggest dispute in the Tree of Life WikiProject. There are various lengthy and ultimately unproductive discussions lying about, but at the moment it's the smaller projects (e.g. WP Birds) that decide the capitalisation. Basically at the moment, it's capitalise common names for birds, undecided for mammals, reptiles and amphibians (many of both), and don't capitalise for plants, etc. Most of the projects have their own conventions on their pages. Note, however, that Ceratophyllum demersum is not a bryophyte but a flowering plant. There are two separate groups of plants kown as "hornworts". One of these is a grop of bryophytes, but the other (Ceratophyllum) is a flowering plant. Worlds End State Park

At this time of year a large yellow orb sometimes appears in the skies above Scotland and the local custom is to venture outside to enjoy this unusual phenomenon. Nevertheless, I will try to take a look sometime this week. Ben MacDui^Talk/Walk 12:17, 25 May 2008 (UTC)

Skye GA nomination on hold

Hi MacDui, I reviewed Skye and put it on hold until the climate section can be expanded somewhat. Other than that it is a very good article, although I made some more suggestions for improvement (that do not need to be done to reach GA). You have a week to make the improvements, although I think they should be fairly easy to do. Please ask if anything is unclear or if you feel this is an unfair assessment. This article has come a long way since you became involved, congratulations on that. I will try to give it a thorough going over in the next few weeks before holidays intervene. Skye map

Hi MacDui, would this be useful? I did not label it yet - what should be labeled? I also tried to focus mostly on Skye itself, should other islands be included? Ruhrfisch _><>°^° 18:46, 16 June 2008 (UTC)

Looks great! Also very helpful as the shape is so odd that I fear the descriptions are confusing without a labelled map. I think the labels could be:

Peninsulas :Trotternish,Waternish, Duirinish, Minginish and Sleat

Villages: Portree, Broadford and Kyleakin

Surrounding islands - probably not necessary, and there may not be room for Raasay, which is the largest neighbour

Cuillin Hills - although again there may not be room as they would be in the same place as Minginish.

OK, I got a bit carried away and added all of the named peninsulas and villages in the article, as well as the named islands. If it is too busy, I can remove things (and you may need to WP:BYC to see the new version). Once it is OK, I will upload it to Commons and delete it here. Just a heads up

I thought you might like to know that the Awards Center page has been deleted, along with its newsletter.  :(

So, where do we go from here?

To new and even more interesting projects, of course!

As announced in the newsletter, I've been preparing to co-coordinate a large collaboration/competition called Around the World. It was going to be run at the Awards Center, but since that no longer exists, the collaboration will be hosted somewhere else.

Around the World will begin July 15th as planned - it's location will be announced soon.

It'll be a blast. In the competition, participants will be helping to develop over 200 pages (drafts, which will be moved to article space once they are ready), using advanced tools to edit every single one of them!

This is going to be interesting.

And the event shall have awards which are being created specifically for it as we speak!

If you would like me to keep you informed of this and other interesting collaborations I'll be working on and/or organizing in the future, please drop me a note on my talk page, and I'll be happy to keep you in the know.

Trouble with lichen

Unfortunately, I don't know anyone on Wikipedia who might be able to help with lichen nomenclature. I can only recommend that you contact either Scott LaGreca (I don't have his current professional address) or Chicita Culberson (at Duke University).
