Andrew:

I had to get out and get some leaf peeping pictures, so I combined that with trying to get the few places that don't have pictures.

To find the Ernest Hemingway Cottage was a real challenge. It was my third trip. I finally found it doing some detective work. I knocked on the door and it looks like it was shuttered for the winter, so I went ahead and photographed it. The address and the GPS coordinates are all wrong. Not even close. My question for you is now I know where it is, should I correct the location? I am thinking this was done deliberately, so people can't find it and show up at the door. I am not sure how many places are National, Michigan and Landmark sites in Michigan, but this is one. It always bugged me that the only photos were the old black and white ones.

I stopped at the Chicago Club in Charlevoix. The manager denied me permission to enter and told me that there was no historic listing, even when I showed him the print out of the Wiki page. He challenged me to find the listing citation. How would I do that?

I had talked with Laura Ashley at the MI SPHO years ago and she helped me. I reached out to her, but I haven't gotten any response. Is there an archive of these listings somewhere. If I was to go to the Michigan Archives in Lansing, would they be there?

I am nuts. I drove miles down dirt roads, then two tracks where the mud holes wanted to swallow my vehicle to get to the Port Cheney Cemetery near Roscommon. It is basically a clearing in the middle of nowhere with very few graves. And then the historic home in Roscommon. Now a brand new Dollar General parking lot.

I took a lot of pictures, so you will see activity from me for some time.

DYK for The Durant

On 26 November 2018, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article The Durant, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that The Durant (pictured) in Flint, Michigan, was opened as a hotel in 1920, vacated in 1973, acquired by the Genesee County Land Bank in 2005, and reopened as an apartment building in 2010? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/The Durant. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, The Durant), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Old Photo

Andrew:

Before I head south for the winter, I am doing a little work on the historic sites. Last week, I went to the MSHPO offices in Lansing and pulled files on about 20 sites that baffled me. A lot of them I looked at are gone. They also gave me answers to other sites' location I couldn't find. I had their permission to copy any of the things in the files. So, there are two pictures of sites that have been demolished. One of them is the Big Prarie Grange Hall you looked for in an earlier talk. Even though they are gone, I felt that it would be important to put them on the site, so people can see what they were.

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Big_Prarie_Grange_Hall.jpg -this site is in Newago County https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:St._John%27s_Lutheran_Church-Lake_City.jpg - this site is in Missaukee County

I took my camera into the MSHPO offices and took photos of the applications, maps and of the few photos of these structures. I still have others that I haven't done anything with, that I will wait to see how these go. I am a bit confused as to proceed, since these photos were taken by unknown people who where looking at registering the sites. The last time I tried this, the photo was put into a fast deletion. I have an aversion to being spanked.

AFD about Michigan highways and parks

Hi, i wonder if you could please comment at ongoing Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of state trunkline highways in Michigan serving parks, regarding List of state trunkline highways in Michigan serving parks. I suggest in the AFD that it makes sense to cover, somewhere, the co-evolution in Michigan of parks and highways, which I project happened similarly to how such co-evolution happened in New York State. I believe you are likely to know about history of both many parks and highways in the state. If you do comment there, please feel free to mention being invited by me to do so.

I did not create the list-article myself, but relatedly I created Category:State highways in Michigan serving parks.

By the way, I do much admire your near completion of coverage of NRHP listings in the state, and with "Start"-level coverage; I have been watching Michigan's performance within wp:NRHPPROGRESS with interest. cheers, --Doncram (talk) 14:30, 1 May 2019 (UTC)

Andrew:

I got the hunting bug again and went to the Upper Peninsula to fill in the missing photos, mostly for the State Historic Sites. I know you are an editor and I want to bring an error to your attention.

In the National Historic Site records there is an entry for the Kinross Township Hall. The submission is in error. Both in the Listing and the article. The building does not exist. It is gone. The GPS coordinates and address are not accurate. The picture is totally inappropriate.

https://www.google.com/maps/@46.2766713,-84.515258,3a,75y,311.48h,79.85t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sh3stTLompPhgddVY42GAvQ!2e0!7i3328!8i1664?hl=EN

What is interesting is Google Streets show the building. So it was there in 2008.

Wingerham52 (talk) 15:34, 23 June 2019 (UTC)

Kinross Hall

The building is not the same. I have been there several times over the years and it has been demolished. There is an old farmhouse and a place across the street I thought might be it. I had taken pictures of all the structures in the area. There were only two structures on the road a year or so ago.

During my searching, I found the Google Street image of the historic building. Knowing what it looked like I went back there a few weeks ago and saw the brand new house that was built. Alas, the historic structure is gone. It was just a couple of lots away from the new house. The person changed the address, the GPS coordinates to put the new house in. I actually turned in the driveway and looked at it. It is totally brand new. It is not a renovation. If you use the Google image to place it, it is not where the NRHP office puts it, nor the brand new house. That house has been built since I was last up there. In any case, that is not the historic structure by any means.

As you know, these historic structures disappear without any knowledge to the historic offices. I found a Dollar General parking lot where a MI historic home was.

I had noticed that you got a lot of the national places in the UP. I was trying to fill in the MI historic places. I spent weeks trying to research the trip and I still couldn't find some of them. I spent some time in Lansing doing research on these and I can say that the state employees who work there don't have a clue.

Kinross Hall

Andrew:

I just can't see where you see any resemblance to the town hall. It may be built in the same spot, but I was sitting in this guys driveway looking at this home. It is completely new. And yes, people tear down old structures and rebuild over them.

I was up there a year or so ago and the building was already demolished. I had driven up and down the road several times looking for what would be a historical building, and not finding any. And after about 1,200 finds, I can see a historical site a long ways away. I only went back when I had seen that Google Streets recorded the actual building. Thinking that I missed it before, I thought I would check it out again.

And what is weird is this road and area have very modest and mobile homes. This new house is a far cry above the adjoining properties.

My contention is whatever was done, this is not in anyway shape or form a National Historic Site. It should be removed.

Wingerham52 (talk) 17:44, 24 June 2019 (UTC)

Andrew:

I hadn't seen that any action was taken of that matter, so I tried another route. There is another issue and that involves you.

I can relate how frustrating it is to arrive at an address and finding nothing. It has happened many times for me.

In Iron County, there is the Donald Mackinnon house. It is both a National and Michigan historic building. I presume it is gone. You placed a picture of the grass where it once stood. I have difficulty seeing how that is relevant to the listings. Showing nothing is better than grass. I have seen a large number of your pictures and that is only one I have found that is questionable. You may have a specific reason to do this with this listing, but I am not sure what it is.

Michigan churches

I've long enjoyed your work on Michigan historic sites and am hoping that, at some point, you might have an opportunity to add photographs to fill in some of the image gaps at any of the following that may be of interest:
