In Wikipedia_talk:Articles_for_creation/Murray_polygon, is the asterisk in expressions like supposed to represent ordinary multiplication? If so, that is uncouth. In TeX one can write

etc. The use of an asterisk was adopted as a workaround for situations when one is limited to the characters on the keyboard and cannot use the letter x (as when one writes 3 x 4 = 12 instead of 3 × 4 = 12). That happens in computer programming languages. To use an asterisk that way when one has sophisticated typesetting software available is to eat mashed potatoes with your fingers when silverware is available. Michael Hardy (talk) 00:45, 27 September 2013 (UTC)Reply

I agree. In my defence, I was trying to follow the original notation - in a computer journal - perhaps a bit too closely. Anders Sandberg (talk) 09:00, 28 September 2013 (UTC)Reply

Proposed deletion of Verrill surface edit

The article Verrill surface has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Does not pass WP:GNG, as there are no hits for this in Google scholar nor MathSciNet. It's not even possible to determine who it's named after (although Helena Verrill seems like a possibility)

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Half-exponential function edit

I have done a bit of editing on Half-exponential function. In particular, I italicized variables in non-TeX mathematical notation and conformed to the usual conventions concerning quotation marks and italics in the references.

I think it is a mistake (and I have changed it) to start an article by saying "In real analysis". Those initial words should tell the lay reader that some aspect of mathematics is what the article is about. "In algebra" or "In number theory" or "In geometry" or "In calculus" does that. "In real analysis" does not. "Analysis" means what psychiatrists do, and "real" is opposed to fraudulent.

You left the article without any links from other articles. I've added it to the list of exponential topics and as a "see also" item to the article titled Exponential function. If you know of others that should link to it, you should add those. Michael Hardy (talk) 16:34, 22 May 2014 (UTC)Reply

But I am afraid, that article contains a big overstatement; see its talk. Boris Tsirelson (talk) 20:03, 22 May 2014 (UTC)Reply
Irrespective of the above, now I recall where did I see Anders' name; here I had the pleasure to use your images! Boris Tsirelson (talk) 20:10, 22 May 2014 (UTC)Reply
