It was released on April 13, 2022 by P-Nation and distributed by Kakao Entertainment.[1] An upbeat hip hop and trap song, "Zoom" was written by Jessi, Psy, Bobblehead, and Yumdda and produced by Psy, Yoo Geon-hyung, and Bayb.[2][3]

Background and release edit

In October 2021, Jessi released the digital single "Cold Blooded", in collaboration with the Mnet reality show Street Woman Fighter.[4] In March 2022, P-Nation then announced that she would be coming back with a new single that April.[5][6] The first teaser trailer was released to YouTube on April 11, 2022, followed by a second on April 12.[7][8] "Zoom" was released to digital music platforms as a single on April 13, 2022.[1][2][3]

Composition edit

"Zoom" is an upbeat K-pop and hip hop song, inspired by people's desire to be "photographed and get attention from others", which Jessi called "a sad reality" in an interview with NME.[3] The song was written by Jessi, Psy, Bobblehead, and Yumdda and produced by Psy, Yoo Geon-hyung, and Bayb.[2][3]

The Gaon Download Chart is compiled by the Gaon Music Chart and Korean Music and Content Association (KMCA) on behalf of the music industry, tracking singles downloads in South Korea. It was launched at the beginning of 2010 and provides rankings on a weekly, monthly, and yearly basis.[15][16] The chart is compiled from online data provided by Korean web-based music providers Melon, Bugs, Genie, KakaoMusic, Flo, Vibe, and Soribada.[17] The first number-one song was "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" (2010) by Lee Hyori featuring Ceejay.[18]

Starry Night (Mamamoo song) edit

"Starry Night" (Korean: 별이 빛나는 밤; RR: Byuli bichnaneun bam) is a song by South Korean girl group Mamamoo. It was released on March 7, 2018 as the second single from the group's seventh EP Yellow Flower, the first EP in a series of releases focusing on each member.[45] A dance-pop and Latin-inspired track, "Starry Night" was written by Moonbyul, Park Woo-sang, and Kim Do-hoon, with music and arrangement performed by the latter two. The song peaked at number two on the Gaon Digital Chart and earned the group their first-ever music recording certification, after surpassing 100 million streams according to the Gaon Music Chart.

Background and release edit

In January 2018, Mamamoo released the digital single "Paint Me", a precursor to their upcoming album project titled 'Four Seasons, Four Colors', in which the group would release four EPs, each focusing on one member and a corresponding season.[46] The next month, the group released the first teasers for the first EP in the series, Yellow Flower.[47] "Starry Night" was released as the second single from Yellow Flower on March 7, 2018, alongside the release of the EP itself.[48][49]

On August 7, 2019, the re-recorded Japanese-language version of the song was released as part of the group's debut Japanese album, 4colors, by JVCKenwood Victor Entertainment.[50] On September 15, 2021, an orchestral remix of the song was released as part of their debut compilation album I Say Mamamoo: The Best.[51][52]

Sonically a dance-pop and K-pop track, "Starry Night" is a dance track featuring "Latin-inspired strings."[53] The song is composed in the key of A minor and at a tempo of 124 BPM, running for three minutes and 31 seconds.[49][54]

"Starry Night" was met with positive critical reception upon release, with Hong Dam-young of The Korea Herald calling it "dramatic" and "dynamic."[48] CelebMix stated that it "confirmed and lived up to the expectations of the fans and the critics" in a year when many K-pop acts were experimenting with Latin music."[53]

Commercial edit

A commercial success, "Starry Night" debuted at number two on the Gaon Digital Chart, earning 44.7 million index points in its first week.[55] It remained at that position for four consecutive weeks, before dropping to number four for the issue dated April 7, 2018.[56] The song was the highest-performing song of March 2018, earning 219 million index points in that time frame.[57] It was the 13th highest-performing song of 2018 on the chart and was the fourth highest-performing song by a girl group, with over 818 million index points earned in 2018.[58] The song earned a further 77 million points in 2019.[59] "Starry Night" also peaked at number one on the Billboard Korea K-pop Hot 100 and number eight on Billboard World Digital Songs Sales.[60]

In November 2018, "Starry Night" earned the group their first platinum certification from the Gaon Music Chart and Korean Music & Content Association for surpassing 100 million domestic streams.[61] It was certified for 2.5 million digital downloads in July 2019.[62]

Music video edit

The music video for "Starry Night" was directed by Won Ki-hong.[63] It was shot entirely in New Zealand.[64] Like with their music video for previous single "Paint Me", the music video was posted to both the group's official channel and the 1theK distributor channel.[65][66] As of February 2022, the music video has a combined total of 201.4 million views across both channels.

I Say Mamamoo: The Best (stylized in all caps[67]), sometimes referred to as The Best, is the first compilation album by South Korean girl group Mamamoo. It was released on September 15, 2021 by RBW.[72] The album features 23 tracks, including remixes and re-recorded versions of some of the group's biggest hits. It includes two original tracks, "Mumumumuch" and "Happier Than Ever," with the former being released as the lead and only official single from the album alongside the release of the album itself.

Background and release edit

Following the release of their eleventh EP WAW in June 2021 and their online concert of the same name in August, reports emerged that Mamamoo were preparing a greatest hits album to be released in September. The album, which would mark the first group release after member Wheein declined to renew her contract with record label RBW, was to celebrate seven years as a group.[73] In early September, the group confirmed the album's title, cover, and release date through their social media.[51][74] I Say Mamamoo: The Best was released in full on September 15, 2021.[52]

Promotion edit

Prior to the album's release, Mamamoo performed the two new original songs, "Mumumumuch" and "Happier Than Ever," during their August 2021 online concert, alongside several of the 2021 remix versions included on the album. Compared to their other albums, The Best received minimal promotions and the group opted to not perform on South Korean music programs, as the album was considered a gift to fans rather than an official comeback.[75]

Single edit

"Mumumumuch" was released as the album's lead and only single on September 15, 2021, coinciding with the release of the album itself. The song is a "dance-pop track with a rhythmical bass line that describes just how much they love someone and how having those feelings makes them shine as well." It also "expresses love for their fans and was included in the compilation album as a special gift."[76] In the music video, released on September 15, the four members of Mamamoo "spend quality time together in a lavish hotel suite, where they have drinks, cakes and more" and "perform at a resort, overlooking vibrant purple hills," as per NME.[77]

Critical reception edit

Puah Ziwei of NME described the compilation as a rarity for K-pop groups but maintained that Mamamoo executed the album's concept well, saying that it "largely lives up to the group's legacy." He dubbed the rock version of their 2019 single "Gogobebe" a stand-out track, though he stated that the two new tracks felt "par for the course for K-pop in the 2020s" and "might be viewed in a slightly more positive light" had they been released as standalone singles.[78] On the review aggregator Album of the Year, I Say Mamamoo: The Best holds a user score of 64.[79]

Commercial performance edit

I Say Mamamoo: The Best recorded 6,981 sales on its first day of release, a figure much smaller than their previous 2021 release WAW, which recorded nearly 40,000 first-day sales. Due to the success of the album in digital platforms, fans of the group blamed the group's label, RBW, for not being able to print enough copies of the album to keep up with demand, leading to it quickly selling out on various retailers, though the company made no statement on the matter.[80] The album went on to debut at number eight on the Gaon Album Chart for the 38th issued week of 2021, making it their 14th top-ten album.[81][82] On the monthly album chart for September 2021, the album placed at number 25, selling 29,996 physical copies; it dropped one place to number 26 for the month of October, with 29,159 copies sold for a total of 59,155 copies.[83][84] Globally, The Best reached number one on the iTunes charts in 12 regions.[80] As of January 2022, the album has generated 20.4 million streams on music streaming platform Spotify and more than four million streams on YouTube Music.[85][86]

Lead single "Mumumumuch" debuted and peaked at number 102 on the Gaon Digital Chart and number eight on the Gaon Download Chart, with each of the 23 tracks from The Best entering the Download Chart as well.[87][88]

Beginning in August 2019, Mamamoo participated in the reality-competition show Queendom, in which six trending female K-pop acts competed for their own comeback showcase to air on South Korean pay TV channel Mnet.[94] Throughout the course of the program, Mamamoo released a cover of AOA's 2016 single "Good Luck," a rerecording of their own 2016 single "I Miss You," and the original song "Destiny." "Destiny" was later included on their second studio album Reality in Black.[95] In the finale episode of Queendom, Mamamoo were declared the winners of the competition.[96] The group then announced the release of their second full studio album through their Twitter account on November 1.[96][97][98] "Hip" was announced as the album's lead single on November 8, and it was released alongside the album on November 14.[99]

The Japanese version of the song was released on February 5, 2020.[100]

"Hip" is a pop and dance-pop song with swing and hip hop influences, noted by Billboard as a "powerful, anthemic melody" and "brassy take-down" of the group's haters.[101] The song features the group's four members singing and rapping over a strong and confident beat. Newsweek reported "Hip" as being "about living a life where you don't care about how other people see you" and "convey[ing] the meaning of valuing yourself and living confidently rather than caring about what others think."[102]

Promotion and live performances edit

Mamamoo first performed "Hip" at their album showcase on November 14, 2019, as reported by The Korea Herald.[103] The first televised performance of the song occurred November 15 on KBS Music Bank,[104] followed by performances on MBC Show! Music Core on November 16[105] and SBS Inkigayo on November 17.[106] The group performed "Hip" alongside their Queendom finale song "Destiny" at the 2019 V Live Heartbeat Awards.[107] They then performed at several year-end festivals and award shows, including the SBS Gayo Daejeon festival on December 4[108] and the KBS Song Festival on December 27.[109] On December 5, they performed a remixed version of the song at the 2019 Mnet Asian Music Awards in Nagoya, Japan.[110] With nearly 60 million views and over 1.4 million likes as of September 2021, the official performance video is the most-viewed performance of the ceremony.[111]

The official music video for "Hip" was released on November 14, 2019 through Mamamoo's official YouTube channel.[101][112] The music video went viral and would later become their first to surpass 200 million views, acheiving the feat on December 16, 2020.[113] As of September 2021, the video has amassed over 285 million views and 4.2 million likes, being the group's highest-viewed video.[112] The official performance video for the song was released on November 18 and has 50 million views as of September 2021.[114]

Commercial performance edit

Upon its release to digital retailers, "Hip" peaked atop three domestic real-time music streaming charts and within the top ten of others as other songs from Reality in Black also entered charts.[115] The single debuted at number at number 20 on the Gaon Digital Chart,[116] number two on the component Gaon Download Chart,[117] and number 38 on the component Gaon Streaming Chart[118] for the 46th issued week of 2019. It would go on to peak at number four on the Gaon Digital Chart in its third week on the chart.[119] "Hip" would later go on to be certified platinum by the Korea Music & Content Association (KMCA) for surpassing 100 million streams in November 2020,[120] earning the group their second certification after "Starry Night" in 2018. Elsewhere in Asia, "Hip" peaked at number 39 in Japan, becoming their first top-40 hit in the region, and at number 14 in Singapore.

On November 15, "Hip" debuted and peaked at number 93 on the US iTunes Song chart, spending two days total on the main chart. It was their first song to reach the main all-genre chart. The song also charted on iTunes charts in various other countries, including Canada, where it peaked at number 55 and charted for six days, and in Australia, where it peaked at number 65 and charted for two days.[121] The single debuted at number five on the Billboard World Digital Songs Sales chart, before peaking atop the chart the next week, moving around 2,000 downloads in the United States.[122] This made it the group's first song to top the chart and made them the tenth K-pop act (and fourth female act) to top both the World Digital Songs Sales and World Albums charts, doing so with "Hip" (2019) and Purple (2017), respectively.[123] With nearly 146 million streams on Spotify as of September 2021, it is currently their most streamed song.[124]

Dingga (Korean: 딩가딩가, RR: dingga dingga) is a song by South Korean girl group Mamamoo. It was released on October 20, 2020 as the lead single from the group's tenth extended play (EP), Travel. A disco and dance-pop song, "Dingga" was written by Kim Do-hoon, Park Woo-sang, and Moonbyul and produced by the former two along with Hwasa. The song was met with positive reception and became a top-ten hit in South Korea and on the Billboard World Digital Songs Sales chart.

Background and release edit

Following the release of promotional single "Wanna Be Myself" for Mamamoo's campaign with athletic clothing brand Andar in September, Mamamoo announced the impending release of their tenth EP Travel in November. They revealed that they would be releasing a pre-release digital single titled "Dingga" on October 20, two weeks before the EP itself.[143] Korean media outlet Dispatch reported that Mamamoo's agency, RBW, remarked that with "hard times like this, we are in needs of Vitamin D. As we can’t get enough at the outside MAMAMOO will bring the Vitamin D by music," in reference to the vitamin D sign shown in an October 16 concept photo.[144]

The Japanese version of the song was released to digital retailers on January 20, 2021.[145]

Composition edit

"Dingga" is a K-pop, disco, and dance-pop song composed by Kim Do-hoon, Park Woo-sang, and Hwasa. The Korean version runs for two minutes and 59 seconds, while the Japanese version runs for three minutes and one second. It is composed in the key of A minor and at the tempo of 120 BPM.[146] The title represents either the Korean expression for the "act of lazily enjoying one’s free time"[147] or Korean onomatopoeic phrase for the sound a guitar makes.[148] Lyrical themes of the song includes those of isolation, quarantine, and wanting to have fun during the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as reminiscing for "pre-COVID-19 times, where most... did not have to spend time at home."[147][149] During an interview with Korean media outlet TVing, Mamamoo described the song as one "that expresses the desire to play 'Dinga Dinga' together in times when we have to maintain social distancing and live lonely daily lives."[150]

Promotion and live performances edit

As it was considered a "pre-release single," the group did not attend weekly music shows to promote the single upon its release. The first televised performance of the song occurred came on November 3, 2020 as part of their Mnet comeback show Monologue, which serves as the prize they earned for winning 2019 reality-competition show Queendom.[151] Following the release of the Travel EP, they performed it several music programs, including M Countdown on November 5,[152] Music Bank on November 6,[153] and Show! Music Core on November 7.[154] On December 6, they performed it, along with "Aya" at the 2020 Mnet Asian Music Awards.[155] Mamamoo performed "Dingga" on March 28, 2021 as part of their KCON:TACT Season 3 performance on the final day of the online festival.[156]

Music video edit

The official music video for "Dingga" was uploaded to YouTube on October 20, 2020 at 6:00 PM KST, in conjunction with the release of the single itself. Like several of their previous singles, the clip was posted to both the group's official channel and the 1theK distribution channel.[157][158] Teen Vogue described it as "punchy" and "fun," featuring scenes including "roller derby, diners, and arcades as the members joyfully dance and hang out with each other."[147] Seoul Beats noted the use of retro elements, including "disco balls and neon signs," in many scenes of the video, as well as the dance break, which is not included in the official audio of the track and is a music video exclusive.[149] As of September 2021, the music video has garnered over 84.32 million views at 2.6 million likes on YouTube.

The music video for the song's Japanese version was published through the Mamamoo Japan Official YouTube channel on February 1, 2021, featuring the same scenes as the original video except rerecorded in Japanese.[159]

Commercial performance edit

Upon its release, "Dingga" entered various South Korean real-time music streaming charts, peaking at number two on Bugs, three on Genie Music, and ten on Melon, and it topped iTunes songs charts in 12 regions worldwide.[160] The song debuted at number 20 on the Gaon Digital Chart for the 43rd issued week of 2020, also placing at number five on the Gaon Download Chart and number 40 on the Gaon Streaming Chart.[161][162][163] In its fourth week of charting, it peaked at number seven on the Gaon Digital Chart, earning 20.2 million Gaon index points that week.[164] The song also peaked at number five on the Billboard Korea K-pop Hot 100.[68] Additionally, "Dingga" peaked at number 59 on the Billboard Japan Hot 100 and number 21 on the RIAS Top Streaming Chart in Singapore.[90][165]

"Dingga" peaked at number 47 on the US iTunes Song chart on October 21, one day after its release, and charted for four days.[166] It later debuted and peaked at number eight on the Billboard World Digital Songs Sales chart, on the chart issue dated October 31, 2020, and spent three consecutive weeks on the chart.[167] It thus became the group's ninth top-ten entry on the chart.[168] As of September 2021, "Dingga" has generated 45.3 million streams on Spotify, with the Japanese version accounting for almost 3% (1.2 million) of total streams.[169]
