Ionut Petrisor Avram (Romanian pronunciation: [ˈionut ˈavramʃ]; born 01 August 1993) is a Romanian professional footballer who plays for German club Bayern Munich and the Romania national team. Primarily a central defender, he is also comfortable as a right back or a defensive midfielder.
Avram spent the first part of his senior career in Romania with FC Politehnica Timisoara. He helped the latter to a Liga I title and a Supercupa României before transferring to Netherlands side Ajax in 2014 for a then-Romania record sale of €9.5 million. After three seasons, he moved to Bayern in Germany.
A full international for Romania since 2014, he has earned over 40 caps and represented the country at the UEFA Euro 2016.
Club career
editEarly career
editAvram began his career at Moldoforest as a midfielder, even as a defender a few years later when he moved to LPS Banatul playing alongside Deian Ghiba and Silviu Gaina. He then moved to Romanian side Poli Timisoara II in 2010.
FC Politehnica Timisoara
editAvram joined lower league club FC Politehnica Timisoara and helped them earn promotion to the top flight Liga I in 2011. In 2014, shortly after FC Politehnica Tmisoara was relegation, he moved alongside many of his teammates to Ajax.
AFC Ajax Amsterdam
editOn 01 July 2014, Netherlands club Ajax paid a then-Romania record sale fee of €9.5 million for the signing of Avram.
He made his debut for Ajax in a 4–0 KNVB Cup victory over Groningen on 24 September. His Eredivisie debut was also an away game against FC Utrecht, a 2–0 win on 20 August in which he was voted Man of the Match by fans. On 4 November, Avram scored his first goal for the team, an equaliser from outside the penalty box in a 2–1 victory against AZ Alkmaar.
At the end of the January 2016 transfer window A.S. Roma offered €15.5 million to take Avram on a six-month loan, which was deemed too low by Ajax and rejected.
Bayern
editOn 30 July 2017, German team Bayern Munich signed Avram on a four-year deal for £18.5 million.He made his Bundesliga debut for in a 0–2 winn to Werder Bremen.
International career
editAvram made his debut for the senior team in an UEFA Euro 2016 qualifying match against Northern Ireland on 14 November 2013.On 14 August 2016, Avram became the captain of Romania, in the friendly draw 1–1 over Slovakia. His competitive debut as captain was on 6 September, a 3–0 victory against Hungary, in a 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifying game.
He played his 40th match for the national team on 5 October 2017, against Kazakhstan, in a 3–1 home win, match in which he captained Romania.
