I like the Wife selling article too, I think one of my problems with it is that I've read The Mayor of Casterbridge, in which it plays a major role, so I knew it was real from the start. Galen Hall

Dincher, I would be glad to help promote the Galen Hall article to Class "B" and then Good Article status. I've got plenty of references for his time in Gainesville, but what I could really use are some good reference materials for Galen's time as PSU quarterback, Oklahoma OC, his arena football coaching and his time back in State College as OC for JoePa. I feel stupid - there used to be a big PDF history of the restoration of Knapps Covered Bridge online, which would have been great for getting that to FA, but now I cannot find it. I also expect to make an article on the 6 lakes within the park historically (Mud Pond, Lake Jean, Lake Rose, Lake Leigh, and the two ice dam lakes, one dry now and the the other Mountain Spring Lake), although the ice dam lakes are technically on Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission land now. The reviewer also thought it was rotated (easily fixable) and did not like the white car in the background. I tried a crop to get rid of the car, but then the image was too small to be QI. The Ghost Towns of North Mountain book has a fair amount on Ricketts various logging operations and a bit on the CPL. The best sources for the CPL would be the Thomas T. Taber logging railroad books. I also have a newspaper article from the Sun-Gazette on Ricketts (the ghost town) and how there are tours from the state park to the the ghost town. Ruhrfisch _><>°^° 02:08, 9 April 2010 (UTC)

Thanks - it is much shorter than Joseph Priestley House, the only other house article I have worked much on, so I was not sure. Ganoga Lake is private and there is a gate on the road now. There are a couple more color photos on Flickr that I could ask for a free license on. I kind of like the black and white - I am nearly 100% sure the man in the infobox image is William Reynolds Ricketts - but would also love to see the house in person (and take some pix). Raccoon Creek State Park

I just noticed this edit, which makes complete sense; it's literally the closest city, but Frankfort Springs is clearly the closest non-township municipality. RGSP / Bruce

Thanks for working on the trails - if you have access to Google books, several of them are also listed in hiking books - see this. I am trying to figure out where (if) to include the oil drilling fraud near what is now Lake Rose (in the HABS report, 1865-66). Ruhrfisch _><>°^° 19:07, 1 May 2010 (UTC)

I was thinking of a paragraph at the end of the early inhabitants section, after the Ricketts brothers built the stone house in 1852. It was before RB Ricketts bought the land from his father, so it seems better to include it there. I had also thought of adding it to the Sickler and Dodson squatters making cherry bed frames paragraph, because the one well was at Dodson's dam. I do not think this works well though, as Dodson was gone by about 1860 and does not seem to have had anything to do with the oil well fraud. I will try adding it.

I also think the RB Ricketts and the lumber era section could be written differently than the usual lumber era histories. It seems pretty clear that: a) the stone house was used as a tavern / inn from day one and that RB Ricketts continued this, even adding the wooden "ark" hotel wing to make the North Mountain House hotel; b) RB Ricketts was also trying very hard for many years to get someone to help him cut lumber on as much of land as possible, the main drawback being a lack of access - no major creeks, no railroads. Petrillo's book goes into great detail on all the different deals RBR was involved in that fell through before he finally succeeded with Trexler and Turrell and established the town of Ricketts. I think it is safe to say RB Ricketts needed the hotel finacially before that; c) The town of Ricketts was founded in 1890, the railroad reached Ganoga Lake by 1893, at which point the mills were in full operation. Not long after the sawmills were in full swing, RB Ricketts starts scaling back his hotel operations - tore down the wooden ark in 1897, closed the hotel altogether in 1903. d) Ricketts was also looking for other ways to make money - ice business on Ganoga Lake (1895 to 1915 or so), the dams built to make Lakes Rose and Leigh and Jean for hydroelectric power (around 1905 to 1907). In the one New York Times story there is a great quote from the colonel himself that he used to be land poor (i.e. he owned a lot of land, but it brought him little income) but after the hydroelectric scheme failed he was "dam poor"; and finally e) the lumber business was a steady one until the trees ran out about 1913 or so, at which point the town of Ricketts became a ghost town. I also want to mention in the article that parts of Ricketts town were in what is now the park (newpaper article from the Sun-Gazette), and also mention the other lumber operations in the area - Phillips Creek and the eastern park were logged by other firms - as well as the other ice making operations (Mountain Springs Lake was Ice Dam No. 2 originally).

OK, I have to be careful as the refs mention RB Ricketts finacial difficulties, but do not directly say he gave up the hotel business once he got money from lumber. I have been rereading the Petrrillo book, and the HABS and the NRHP forms - the NRHP form says "Despite profits, Ricketts became disenchanted with the hotel business and closed his hotel in 1903." and {etrillo's book on page 3 says "Ricketts was on the verge of financial disaster for two decades until the Lehigh Valley Railroad was constructed through his lands.". I changed the format of the bullet lists in Bruce so that the page size script would count the bullet points in the Trails section. When we started the expansion it was at 11 kB, were at 28 kB just before this, and after the format change we are at 30 kB. DYK needs 5x expansion generally (to 55 kB), although if we get it over 4x (44 kB) and it is basically ready for FAC I am guessing we could get an WP:IAR exception from the DYK rule. The RGSP article is 11 kB, Bruce is up to 35 kB, or just over 3x expansion. I need to finish the History - want to find out something baout the Benton Air Force Station (a radar base from WWII) and add the Red Rock Job Corps too (what the base became). Plus there is still an FAA radar dome there, but I need a RS for these. Also can add the new office, the dam removals, Hurricane Floyd and its effects on the park. Osceola Mills

Issue is fixed; it's just Clearfield. My source for so saying is this Census Bureau document. If you want to download it, you'll find it potentially useful: sort the "Name" column to get all instances of each municipality grouped together, and check the "County" column. The numbers in this column are the FIPS codes for the counties; you can find which is which simply by searching for a county name in the column, since of course its entry in the FIPS code column will be the FIPS code for the county. The other is the fact that the original park is now underwater, so something like DYK... that the original facilities for Buffalo Bill State Park in Wyoming have been underwater since the Buffalo Bill Dam was raised 25 feet (7.6 m) in 1983? Glad you liked that one - the dam part reminded me a bit of Little Pine SP - the original park there is the picnic area below the dam, and all the CCC-built stuff was washed away by Agnes in 1972 (only time the water ever went over the dam there). Good news on Buffalo Bill too. Harris Theater is kind of in limbo - one oppose with many objections, which we are in the second round of replying to. About half the objections were struck after the first round of our replies, just waiting for the second round to be looked at (for a couple of days now). So just waiting to see what else needs to be worked on some more. I have 7 or 8 pages of notes for Ricketts Glen and Ganoga Lake and the mansion from the video and new Col. Ricketts biography. Gull Point Observation Deck

Hi.

I would ask that you restore my addition of the georeference for the Gull Point observation deck. The Gull Point trail is poorly marked, especially at a fork. Locating the observation deck can be a frustrating experience, easily relieved with a GPS waypoint. Of course, the deck is open to the public when the trail is open, so I am not providing information that would be prohibited. I have high confidence in the quality of the coordinates provided, as I obtained them myself via GPS last fall.

The platform is clearly marked, but the trail isn't. Try it sometime. The park map lacks any georeferences besides an arrow pointing north.

By the way, public places like Presque Isle only exist today because they are travel destinations. Anyone searching the web for a place like Gull Point is probably expecting to go there.

Although the observation platform is shown on the official park map, it is not listed on the official park website that I can find, nor is it in the Wikipedia article currently. I also note that there is only one set of coordinates in the article, the USGS GNIS coordinates for the park. I think it would be better to contact the park office and ask that they improve the signage / trail blazes. Thanks, Ruhrfisch _><>°^° 01:52, 21 June 2010 (UTC)
