NHL updates

I am trudging my way through the Pennsylvania National Historic Landmarks updating the infoboxes (trying to get all this done by July 4th to be patriotic and hopefully not kill myself in the process ;-) ). I modified the map page on Commons to indicate the map you used was Ram-Man's modification of a Census map and added a link to that alternate version. I would change all the other map descriptions to also indicate this to avoid more of these friendly reminders ;-). Korn means grain or seed (as the English word "corn" can too) so Körner is the plural = seeds. Brötchen is little bread or a roll. Not sure why I am in Gemran lesson mode today. State Park pictures

I went up to French Creek about two weeks ago and took a bunch of wildflower pictures, but afterward I realized I didn't have a good overall photo of the park. I went up there with the Appies today and fixed that. I also have some pictures of Hopewell I may upload from the first trip. I may go on another AMC trip to Hickory Run next weekend; are there any parks in SE PA you particularly desire photos for? Choess (talk) 00:59, 13 July 2008 (UTC)

Well, the Hickory Run trip was nixed due to car trouble (don't ask) but the Grundsau of Good Feeling has brought you an image of Marsh Creek State Park and added it to the article. Remember: keep your limbs, remove the tree's. Choess (talk) 02:56, 18 August 2008 (UTC)

Glad you like it and I see you have already added it to the South Williamsport article. I have one looking north too (of Williamsport), but it is better of the bridge and the single point urban interchange than it is of the city beyond. I have not cropped or uploaded it yet. Thanks for all of your work on removing quotes - what a pain. The Colton Point / Leonard Harrison map is slow but I am working on it. There is an odd shaped tract of private land in CPSP I need to draw by hand and I have to figure how to redo the southern border which is wrong in the Census base map. Got some pics of Crunchy Chips Former SP today - very cool place even if half the hemlocks are dead or dying from the wooly adelgid Ruhrfisch ><>°° 01:35, 17 July 2008 (UTC)
There were no signs of those chips there, or any other people, except for a DCNR truck that went by on the road. I know the pope is Catholic, not sure of the safety of groundhogs in NAs - might be crushed by a falling hemlock. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 02:09, 17 July 2008 (UTC)
I know trees are harvested in the state forests but in a Natural Area they seem to be left where they fall. The ones that fell across the path were sawed in two so hikers could get by. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 03:25, 17 July 2008 (UTC)

Infoboxes

I checked the Recent Changes for Westmoreland, saw that you did the cities and skipped to a different county. I should be getting around to Greene sometime in the next few days. Greene appears to be the last county after Westmoreland before Allegheny is up. Leonard Harrison State Park

Thanks for your work so far and moving the Grand Canyon article. I can work on it some between now and Saturday. I think the best thing would be to add to both parks when it is applicable to both, then go for FAC with Leonard Harrison first. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 02:04, 23 July 2008 (UTC)

I am not lost, but do find it a bit daunting to add stuff to what we already have - for example Owlett says Susquehannocks lived on the plateau on either side of the gorge, and I need to add specifics on the native trail, and more Owlett stuff on the Iroquois. I got the Pine Creek Path article started and think I can get a DYK out of it, plus I can link to it in the LHSP article. The CCC statue is up near the main overlook terrace. The rail trail map has some more on the trail I can add - will do so now. I have read 60 pages of Owlett and am ready to expand the lumber section - what a sad story though. There is nothing on the National Natural Landmark or animals besides birds. Also no Geology yet. Your additions look good and I have a few more things too (one fave - In 1932 a woman who had lived all her life in Wellsboro went to the park for the first time and her first reaction was to ask how long the gorge had been there!). I think we should get all the history in first, and then decide what and where to prune (for example tanneries are in twice and the log slide at LHSP is duplicated too). It might be we need to prune the first paragraph - we have so much specific info here that some of it might not be needed. We also might want to consider whether or not to include Colton Point info here, or only have it in the CPSP article (which would save some space too). I don't think we should cut yet, see how it all looks first when "done". I got some more pictures today and will upload them soon (next few days) - I am having computer issues so slower access than normal. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 01:36, 27 July 2008 (UTC)

The pics are all uploaded except for one. I am in the process of making a new panorama from the overlook, with the railings visible at either end. I may add the Otter vista view back when there is a Geology section as it shows the dissected plateau - the "mountain tops" are all the same height. Also it is a view south and the lead image is north. Agree the Flickr images are noting great, but thanks for looking. Will be fairly busy in real life this week. Thanks for startinmg it. Owlett has a whole chapter on Geology, complete with all of the rock layers, their ages, etc. Owlett also has some more on establishing the park - I thought I might add to the current Leonard Harrison section. Start with Nessmuk, who was the first to write of the Gorge and promote conservation there, the fact that it took him 5 hours to get to the gorge from Wellsboro back then (after a 6 mile buggy ride - had to hike in through brambles), plus more stuff once the park was donated to PA - Wellsboro still ran it until after WWII. Glad it looks OK. I do lots of edits and previews without saving initially - for a long tiume I had the Geology section up with the Gorge, but thought it looked funny there. I think it is OK to have the Gorge before History as it is the defining feature of the park (just like the name is a special case at Worlds End). Agree we can ask at PR or be told at FAC to move it if needed. Although it is slow, I can see using chunks of this in Colton Point and the Gorge and Pine Creek articles. Good plans all, now to win the lottery so I can do nothing but edit (and revert spam). Actually Pine Creek will be a bear - it is the largest creek in the US and three of its four main tribs (Little Pine, Babb and probably Marsh creeks) have enough to be FAs too, plus the gorge, the rail trail, the three state parks, multiple natural and wild areas, West Rim and other trails... (starts wimpering). There is a reason why Plunketts Creek is FA and Pine Creek is still start class. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 02:10, 5 August 2008 (UTC)

Pennsylvania municipalities

Hello ... Thanks for the advice about the PHMC webpage on key dates for municipalities[2]. As a matter of fact, I've been using that webpage all along. At first I cited it conscientiously, but as time wore on, as I was filling in settlement and incorporation dates in the infoboxes, I got lazy about citations.

There are some problematic municipalities:

  • Boroughs such as Seven Springs and Callimont attained borough status after that list was created.
  • For Mount Pleasant Township, the PHMC list says it was incorporated "Before 1773." You would think that an agency of the Pennsylvania government would be able to come up with a specific year. Geez, aren't there any records on when a chunk of land officially became a township? I guess not.
  • For Duquesne, the borough's website gives different dates than the PHMC list.
  • What is meant by "settled"? Does that mean when the first isolated farmhouse was built, or when lots and streets were laid out? If we use the latter definition, what does it mean to say that a "township" was settled on a certain date?
  • For some townships, it may be impossible to say when the first settler arrived. I am getting the impression that record keeping was poor or nonexistent on the frontier in the 18th century.

In any event, I'll fill in as many of the blanks in the infoboxes as I can for my home region, but I'll leave other parts of the state to other editors.

My next goal is to write at least one paragraph of history for every borough/city in Allegheny and Westmoreland Counties. (For example, I wrote the history section for Monessen, my parents' hometown.) I see that you've been busy with repetitive "tidying" tasks. Drats, this Wiki stuff is addictive. Lawrenceville

How can I start a discussion about Lawrenceville on its discussion page? In an encyclopedic article I feel a picture of downtown Lawrenceville would be more representative of the borough than the out of the way library. Of course I'd need to build a concensus on this and then find a picture of the beating heart of the metropolis. Amd194 (talk) 13:11, 6 August 2008 (UTC)

Misc

I have actually been to Ronneburg and replied on its talk page. I added a fair use template to the Leonard Harrison image and spent a while looking for a bigger version (no look, but the Wellsboro Electric Company has the same photo tinted blue here. I think I replied to everything else - still have a few things to add to History and then Dillon's book on "Pennsylvania's Grand Canyon" has a lot on wildlife and plants plus some from Owlett I need to add. You are very welcome. I made sure the Leonard Harrison SP "Modern era" section was in chronological order, but I am not sure I like it that way. What if the arrangement were more thematic and less strictly chronological? The first three paragraphs would stay about the same but add the CCC statue dedication to the end of the third paragraph. The fourth paragraph could be all the state stuff - taking over operation, expansion, name change, new facilities in the 1960s and today. A paragraph on rail service cutbacks, ending and the rail trail. Maybe one on NNL and protected areas, one on whitewater (with two NYT quotes) and scenic river, then the 20 Must See Parks as is. Perhaps move the Nessmuk marker sentence back to the Nessmuk sentence. Not sure what to do with the 1950 NYT quote - maybe put it back in the tourism section - continued after the war. I expanded the lead just now - still have to do Ecology. Was going to do some history (how the forest used to be, vanished animal species) then under state Natural Areea have the current plants and animals besides birds. Then the IBA pretty much as is. The PR nom is in. I will wait and see what any reviewers think of the modern era History section - when I reread it all today it did not seem so bad. It may be just moving the statue dedication date out to the CCC part and the Nessmuk marker date back to his section would also be better. I am pleased with the new old lumber photos. I checked a few talk pages and do not see any Worlds End groundhogs. I think three supports is the minimum required, but we also had Ealdgyth's OK of the refs (she almost never supports or opposes) and two other comments on images that could have opposed but did not. I plan to work on Hillsgrove Covered Bridge next, the next bridge in the queue is Sonestown Covered Bridge, then Buttonwood Covered Bridge (which I have a DYK hook for). I do not think it will take too long to improve Hillsgrove and Sonestown. I added some pictures to Colton Point State Park - I have to stitch some gorge panoramas and look more closely at those. I also have to scan some old pictures - I think the first two black and white photos here can be new - first is a log drive on Pine Creek from the shore CPSP is on today, second is the Shay Locomotive at one of the overlooks with the gorge behind. Yes, I actually dug out my notes on Hillsgrove Covered Bridge this afternoon, although since we worked so long on Leonard and I was just at Colton Point, I am still somewhat obsessed with those too. Plus Pat's great finds on Colton inspired me. I plan to get the bridge done enough to sumbit it to PR, then work on CP and finishing up the odds and ends from Leonard Harrison SP (Leonard bio and splash dam articles, perhaps making notes in addition to the refs).
I also think we need to address Ben MacDui's point about the long lead sentences for the state parks before the next park FAC. I am leaning towards moving the townships to a later sentence in the lead. Many of the state park first paragraphs end with the location, so that would be a posible place for the twps (and several do not have the twps in the lead at all, as you know - Delaware Canal, Bucktail, etc.). I have also wondered if we should put the location in the article somewhere besides the infobox and lead - one place I thought of was the Nearby state parks section, as that is already all about location. I think the lead should definitely mention the entire park is a NRHP historic district (and I agree a separate NRHP only article makes little sense). I also think there could be a CCC section - I read in Owlett or Dillon or perhaps the Spotlight that the CCC built the facilities in one year after the banner year for tourists in 1936. Apparently there was not much at the park before that - they also built the road to the park (on old lumber roads / rail grades). Off to do some PR then bridge work - thanks for the assessment. I uploaded the last of my recent Colton Point pictures - I wish I had one of one of the Four Mile Run waterfalls, but did not have time to hike down to any of them. I have some photos of Pine Creek within the gorge (at Darling Run, maybe 2-3 miles north of the parks) that might be good for the IBA section. What do you think of the current pictures? Deep Creek Lake State Park

Back in March, you moved Deep Creek Lake, Maryland to Deep Creek Lake State Park. I'm not sure that this is correct. While the state owns the lake and shoreline, it's my understanding that the lake itself is not considered part of the State Park. South Renovo

Looking at Image:Renovo, Pennsylvania.jpg, the picture was taken around 6 PM. The West Branch runs pretty much east west there and the shadows are such that we have to be looking south, I think it is South Renovo. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 21:33, 3 September 2008 (UTC)

Bridges

  • I found this with a little digging, which is probably enough detail to get another FA on Knapp's CB (eventually). Might take me a while to make a trip there and I was planning on working on Sonestown CB after Colton Point, then Buttonwood CB. Only poor Lairdsville has too little detail for FA - though even that should be capable of getting to GA. Actually Knapp's is the highest covered bridge above its creek in Pennsylvania, which sounds like a DYK hook to me ;-) Ruhrfisch ><>°° 01:37, 8 September 2008 (UTC)
    • Sorry to be slow in replying - as for Fuchs, I am being interviewed by him about Peer Review for the Signpost and have been slow answering the questions. DYK check

The DYK rules say it has to be a five-fold expansion, not counting infoboxes, tables, images, and refs. The rules are here and there is a character counter there too. Just from eyeballing it, it does not look like a fiovefold expansion in five days. Could you add more to expand it further? Ruhrfisch ><>°° 01:06, 15 September 2008 (UTC)
