Menon and Menon is a company based in Kolhapur, Maharashtra. They have been involved in the manufacturing of intricate automotive grey iron castings like cylinder blocks and heads for over 50 years. have facilities to not only cast these blocks and heads but also to machine these components as per the customer’s requirements. The Company have set up a Greenfield state-of-the-art foundry at Kagal, near Kolhapur, which brings world-class casting manufacturing facilities to India and it also effectively doubles our production capacity.[6][7][8] The Company currently produce castings for almost all the Indian automotive OEMs.[9] With the installation of this plant, they can offer large capacities for exports. They are supported by one of the best, most vibrant, and passionate teams in the industry. The Company belief in constantly updating their technology, improving the skills, and increasing their productivity has been able to give us an edge over the competition.[10] Meeting international standards of quality continues to be their primary focus. Mr. Chandran Menon was born on the 10th of May 1925 in a small village in Kerala.[17] Mr. Menon completed his 2 year technical diploma in Calicut, Kerala, and was appointed immediately as a shop floor technician at Hindustan Aeronautics, Bangalore.[18][19][20] Later in 1940, he joined as a Tool Room in charge with Ordinance Factory, Pune. In 1946, he moved to Kolhapur to explore better opportunities.[21] He worked with Utkurs and later with Yashwant Iron and Steelworks.[22] He had an ingrained drive to create and develop something on his own and that’s what kept him on the move. Mr. Menon established a company named Menon and Co at Udyamnagar, Kolhapur in 1954 for machining diesel engine components. A decade later, on January 19th 1964, a new company called Menon and Menon Engineering was formed at Vikramnagar, Kolhapur.[23][24] On 1st October 1969, the company was converted into a private limited company.[25] Mr. Menon was a self-made man and believed in sheer hard work and perseverance. He had the knack of recognizing and nurturing talent. He was a rugged, practical man. He was full of fatherly affection towards his people, which is a trait commonly seen in first-generation industrialists. Mr. Menon left his imprint on each field he laid his hands on. He believed in bravely turning adversity into an opportunity for prosperity in the future. Mr. Menon’s vision, spirit, and sheer grit not only ensured the growth of his own company and its people but also put Kolhapur on the industrial map of India.

Co. Founder Mr. Ram Menon

Mr. Ram Menon, after his graduation in Commerce, moved into Kolhapur in 1951, following his brother, Shri. Chandran Menon.[26] He began his career in the engineering industry as an employee in a foundry. In association with Shri. Chandran Menon, set upon the path of diversification and is the founder of Menon Pistons Ltd and Menon Bearings Ltd and Co-founder of Menon and Menon Ltd. Mr. Chandran Menon, even in his eighties, played an important role in the corporate affairs of the Menon group. He was the Chairman of the Menon group of companies which includes Menon and Menon, Menon Pistons, Menon Bearings, Menon Piston Rings, etc. Under his leadership, these companies are rated among the few leading manufacturers in the country in their respective fields.

Despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 Pandemic[27] and despite the fact that the operations of the company were fully closed for about 2 months and partially operational for another 2 months, we are happy to report an increase in Sales Revenue from Rs 364.86 Crores to Rs 393.15 Crores, an increase of around 7.75%.[28] We are happier to report that the EBITDA margin of the company increased from Rs 37.85 Crores to Rs 44.22 Crores, an increase of 16.83%.[29] This shows the improvements in the operational efficiencies of the company. These improvements will significantly improve the financial performance of the company in the years ahead. However, the company recorded book losses due to the generation of goodwill out of amalgamation order dated January 20, 2020.[30]

During the year the company experienced an unprecedented surge in demand from the domestic Tractor industry.[31] We expect the surge in demand to continue well into the ensuing year. Besides supplying Blocks and Heads to almost all the major Tractor OEMs operating in India, we also supply to M/s John Deere India Pvt. Ltd & Same Deutz-Fahr India Pvt. Ltd. who use our castings in their final products sold in India as well as exports.[32][33][34] During the year, your Company has generated wind power of around 20.89 Lakhs units as against 25.18 Lakhs Units from 125 MW WTG Wind mill located at Sadawaghapur, near Satara, Maharashtra.[35][36][37][38]

We produce Water Jacketed and Non-Water Jacketed Cylinder Blocks. We have the expertise in developing and manufacturing critical thin walls and intricate cylinder head castings used in EURO-III to EURO-VI engine applications. We also manufacture castings other than Cylinder Blocks and Cylinder Heads. The entire family of other castings consists of Housings, Compressor Crankcases, Gear cases, Discs, and Drive heads.[51][52][53]

Menon & Menon have been experimenting with various grades of aluminum required for the Aerospace industry.[63] They have submitted samples of an Aluminum Fin casting and Aluminum Tube casting required by a Missile manufacturing organization.[64][65] These were in the A357 grade. They have also conducted various trials with A 7075 - grade aluminum, realizing that this is the grade preferred by the Aerospace industry. Menon & Menon were trying to cast A7075 castings using sand casting/Die Casting techniques and subsequently Hipping and Heat Treating them to get the desired properties.[66] Menon & Menon even sent samples to the HAL Koraput facility for trials. These efforts are continuing.

Menon & Menon are also experimenting with stir casting technologies to produce Metal Matrix Composites to get the desired mechanical properties.[67] Menon & Menon have set up a small lab-scale facility at our Kagal plant to work on this initiative. Their attempt so far is to use our over 60 years of metal casting experience to make materials that meet Aerospace requirements.
