Sherway Gardens is a shopping complex which was originally built in 1971. [4] The mall's original structure covered 850,000 square ft and contained 127 stores.[5] Today, Sherway Gardens has expanded to 972,540 square ft with 215 stores becoming one of the largest malls in North America.[6] The two-story mall is located at 25 The West Mall, Etobicoke, Ontario. Through constant reconstruction, the shopping mall has become an “upscale fashion and lifestyle centre” complete with high class retailers, groomed gardens, and a multicultural food court.[7] The TTC and Mississauga Transit bus stops are conveniently located on the south side of the shopping centre, allowing shoppers to have easy access to modes of transportation.[8] On July 7, 2012, the Sherway Gardens management banned smoking on mall property in attempt to eliminate excessive litter and reduce pollution.[9]

Initial Construction edit

The Sherway Gardens mall, a $21.5 million project, was revealed to the public by Sherway Gardens Limited on February 24, 1971.[10] The mall was originally built in an “S” shape design.[11] Communal events and promotional activities took place at the center of the mall.[12] This location was exceptionally popular because of the 31ft high skylight featured there.[13] Similar to other shopping centres, Sherway Gardens contains fountains, lush indoor greenery, benches and couches to help maximize the experience and enjoyment of shopping.[14] Unlike the designs of other malls, such as the Toronto Eaton Centre, Sherway Gardens was built with “intimate low ceilings” which provides an inviting atmosphere for shoppers. Renovations edit

In 1975, to accommodate for 75 new retail spaces, the “S” layout was altered to resemble a figure eight.[16] A few years later, in 1987, Holt Renfrew (one of Sherway Gardens anchor retailers) was moved to a newly built wing on the north side of the mall.[17] The expansion allowed for 20 additional stores and was later referred to as the “fashion wing,” as it housed fashionable upscale retailers.[18] In 1989, the mall continued to expand leading to the construction of a new south wing.[19] The new south wing has a large 'tent-like' structure on its upper level.[20] The million dollar canopy, designed by Zeidler Roberts Partnership Architects, won the Canadian Consulting Engineering Award of Merit.[21] In 2000, the Cadillac Fairview Corporation overtook ownership of Sherway Gardens.[22] Today, the mall continues to expand and house new retailers.

Customer Experience edit

Mohammed Ismail El-Adly performed a study to determine the attractiveness factors within a mall from the shoppers perspective.[23] The concluding results showed that comfort, entertainment, diversity, mall essence, convenience, and luxury were the most attractive attributes to a shopper.[24]

Comfort: Sherway Gardens has earned the reputation of having the "safest, cleanest and most comfortable" environment in the GTA. [25] Its reputable features, such as lush gardens, luxurious black leather chairs, and “intimate low ceilings,” create an inviting atmosphere for shoppers. [26]

Entertainment: Fashion shows, community events, theatrical presentations and other promotional activities are held in the center of the mall, an area that can hold up to 300 in capacity.[27]Also, Sherway Gardens has a fine art gallery, Artworld of Sherway, as well as temporary exhibitions that feature local artists.[28]

Diversity and Mall Essence: Sherway Gardens consists of over 200 shops and services.[29] Sherway Gardens provides a plethora of restaurants, from Starbucks Coffee to McDonalds to The Pickle Barrel. In total, the mall offers 35 different food venues. The mall provides a variety of stores, ranging in price, style, and targeted age.

Convenience: Sherway Gardens is located off of Hwy. 427 or the QEW, creating easy access to and from the mall. Sherway Gardens also has a bus terminal on the south side of the mall, providing service from both TTC and Mississauga Transit routes.[30] The Sherway Shuttle is an additional convenience to customers because it offers free transportation within the mall.[31] Customer service provides many amenities to disabled customers. Accessibility features that are provided include:

  • Escalator in Food Court/Sporting Life wing
  • Wheelchairs (available at the Security Office at Door 3)
  • Handicap Assist Washrooms at Door 3

Luxury: The easy building layout allows for easy access in and around the mall.

Mall Hours edit

The current hours of operation of the mall are:

  • Monday to Friday 10 AM - 9 PM
  • Saturday 9:30 AM - 6 PM
  • Sunday 11 AM - 6 PM[33]

Film Shoots edit

Parts of Mean Girls and the The Sentinel (2006) were filmed using Sherway Gardens as a film setting.[34] Companies interested in using the mall as a location for their film shoots can go to the Sherway Garden's Website and contact a Sherway representative.

Other edit

Sherway Gardens Mall has a seasonal Farmers' Market, located in the North parking lot, every Friday 8am-2pm.[35]
