Recreated edit

I revived this for use in Autism (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views). See also Talk:Autism#New_portal-inline template (edit). Cheers, theFace 20:17, 23 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

Links in bold italics edit

I know that this template matches {{portal}}, but the links shouldn't really be stylized this way. Look at Farm to Market Road 28, and you'll see why. Imzadi 1979  07:47, 9 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

Here's a permanent link to that page. For the most part your right, but there are exceptions. On Open source video game when you try to use {{portal}} there the images push it out of the see also section. Use {{portal bar}} there and the images push a huge amount of whitespace into the See also section. Use a portals sub-section and {{Portal-inline}} there and it works. Bulleted automatically edit

Several pages that include more than one of these templates, (US Roads portal/Some other portal) often have the templates side by side, not bulleted which can be somewhat sloppy. Is there a way to update the formatting, instead of inserting bullets manually on the thousand pages that includes them? An example would be New Jersey Route 66, look at the "see also" section. Tinton5 (talk) 16:14, 18 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

Thumperward (talk · contribs) removed the automatic bullets on March 2, but hasn't updated the pages that transclude the template as promised/indicated/whatever. In the meaning time, I've been changing articles myself as I come across them Imzadi 1979  21:38, 18 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

Projects that do not use a See also section edit

The WP:MEDMOS deprecates See also sections, so another place option is necessary for portal links in general, including this format. There is a discussion at Wikipedia talk:Manual of Style/Medicine-related articles where we are trying to come to a consensus. Peter (Southwood) (talk): 08:14, 10 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

Text parameter edit

can we add a |text= parameter? this will allow me to get rid of {{portal-text-inline}}. thank you. Frietjes (talk) 17:48, 23 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

Done! Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 01:56, 26 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

edit

The logo part of this should be wrapped in a <span class="metadata"> or should maybe have "link=" added to it, either pointing at the portal page or pointing at nothing. Otherwise the logo shows up in the new media viewer and is confusing, especially on pages with many portals. --MarkTraceur (talk) 20:17, 29 May 2014 (UTC)Reply

Thanks, MarkTraceur! Our Help FAQ now documents the ‘metadata’ solution in more detail, with a few caveats. At this point, we would not recommend using the ‘link=’ option to disable Media Viewer for unsuitable images, unless they are intended to act as links -- because this may prevent users from reading important attribution or license information. Protected edit request on 2 February 2015 edit

Description of the problem:

Media Viewer shows images that are a part of the interface.

On, for example, this article when you click the image in the infobox and then click the "next image" arrow then you'll see this.

The article contains the following wikicode:

{{portal-inline|Biography}}

This template contains the image:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:Portal-inline

Description of the solution:

We can stop Media Viewer from displaying images that are a part of the interface with the methods described here.

Thank you!

This makes sense to me. However by the same logic, all images produced by the main template {{portal}} should be excluded as well. So I will make a comment on the talk page over there. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 12:41, 2 February 2015 (UTC)Reply
It seems that Module:Portal already does this. So I do not see this request as controversial. Code is on Template:Portal-inline/sandbox - does this look okay to you? — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 12:48, 2 February 2015 (UTC)Reply
@MSGJ: Yes, that is perfect. Thanks! Brandis76 (talk) 15:32, 2 February 2015 (UTC)Reply

Images edit

I can't tell when and where it came about, but can someone explain the rationale behind having images appear between the bullets and the portal names? I first noticed this template being used on Interstate 8 a few weeks ago and thought it was an anomaly, but then I saw it again today on Space Seed. I think the images are an unnecessary visual cue first of all, and they create a ruin of the text formatting second of all. On both the examples I mentioned, the otherwise useful links are bumped around and misaligned by the visual distraction. I can't think of any reason why we need to have a little image of a VW Beetle next to the text "1960s portal". --Laser brain (talk) 19:38, 11 February 2015 (UTC)Reply

User:Laser brain, you can try either portal bar, or plainlist if you don't like the bullets. Frietjes (talk) 18:25, 22 February 2015 (UTC)Reply
if you don't want the images at all, then use [[Portal:1960s portal|1960s portal]]. Frietjes (talk) 18:27, 22 February 2015 (UTC)Reply

Color edit

Are we able to change the font color for this when it's displayed in template with a dark background? I've tried everything and can't seem to figure it out. 🎓 Corkythehornetfan 🎓 20:20, 5 May 2016 (UTC)Reply

Nevermind. It's been resolved. 🎓 Corkythehornetfan 🎓 21:11, 17 May 2016 (UTC)Reply

Metadata edit

It appears that the entire output of this template, and not just the image, is metadata. If there aren't any objections, I'd like to apply the class="metadata" to the entire output, so that it's omitted from printer view and other alternative views. Matt Fitzpatrick (talk) 21:48, 15 July 2016 (UTC)Reply

It may be metadata, but hiding this text with CSS can be problematic, as in List of gaps in Interstate Highways, Moka pot, and doubtless many other examples. Since the template produces inline text and not a floating box, these pages include it as an item in a bulleted list, and possibly even in a sentence, which looks weird when it is hidden. jleedev (talk) 21:53, 4 August 2016 (UTC)Reply
@Matt Fitzpatrick: Could you revert the last change because when using template after bullet – that bullet displays in mobile view but with no content (that's not looking very nice). --Obsuser (talk) 17:40, 11 November 2016 (UTC)Reply
I've reverted the change. Thanks for pointing this out. Matt Fitzpatrick (talk) 18:36, 11 November 2016 (UTC)Reply

Presentational/unlinked portal icon vs linked portal icon edit

Would anyone object to me converting the portal icon in this template to an unlinked, presentational icon? What I'm asking is basically the equivalent of changing the template output on the line that follows to the one below it:

Seppi333 (Insert ) 22:38, 30 December 2018 (UTC)Reply

@Seppi333: For copyright reasons, the image needs to link to its description page. Qzekrom 💬 theythem 19:03, 18 March 2019 (UTC)Reply

Icon alt text edit

Per MOS:ICON#Remember accessibility for the visually impaired, the portal icon should probably (although not necessarily) include alt text with the portal name. As an alternative to the proposal in the section immediately above, it might be worthwhile to link the icon to the corresponding portal page via |link=PORTAL_PAGENAME instead of using the |link= code from above. Seppi333 (Insert ) 22:46, 30 December 2018 (UTC)Reply

@Seppi333: Since the portal name already appears next to the image, it should not be repeated in the alt text. I recommend making the alt text empty instead. Qzekrom 💬 theythem 19:02, 18 March 2019 (UTC)Reply

Short edit

To Mr. Stradivarius: the |short=anything parameter, according to Template:Portal-inline#Parameters, is in this template to remove "portal" from the output. That should make "(portal name) portal" appear as just "(portal name)". In the example at Template:Portal-inline#Using the name and short parameters, the "Sexuality portal" should appear as just "Sexuality", that is, "portal" should be removed when the "short" parameter is equal to "anything", isn't that correct?

If so, then there must be something needed in the Lua module at Module:Portal-inline that will remove "portal" when the "short" param is used. That is unless it would be better not to have the "short" parameter, in which case it can be removed from the documentation. Which way do you think we should go forward? Paine Ellsworth, ed.  put'r there  17:33, 9 February 2019 (UTC)Reply

To editor Dreamy Jazz: bringing this to your attention, since you created and developed the module. Should we get the module to pass the |short= parameter or should we remove it from the documentation? Paine Ellsworth, ed.  put'r there  11:45, 10 February 2019 (UTC)Reply

Paine Ellsworth, I believe that the code I wrote to convert it to a module has a problem. Fixing it now. Dreamy Jazz 🎷 talk to me | my contributions 11:48, 10 February 2019 (UTC)Reply
Paine Ellsworth problem fixed. I had got my boolean logic the wrong way round when I converted the template to a module. The module will append "portal" when the |small= parameter is not used or left empty as the template documentation states. Template-protected edit request on 18 March 2019 edit

The icon should have alt text "icon" (this is done at {{Portal}}). Qzekrom 💬 theythem 19:23, 18 March 2019 (UTC)Reply

Not done: it's not clear what changes you want to be made. Please mention the specific changes in a "change X to Y" format and provide a reliable source if appropriate. — JJMC89(T·C) 03:49, 19 March 2019 (UTC)Reply
@JJMC89: Per MOS:PDI, the icon in this template should have alt text |alt=icon if it is copyrighted, or blank alt text if it is public domain. Qzekrom 💬 theythem 23:14, 21 March 2019 (UTC)Reply
The issue is clear, but you still haven't specified the exact change that needs to be made. From what I can tell, you have to make updates for each image on the image subpages of Module:Portal. — JJMC89(T·C) 02:35, 22 March 2019 (UTC)Reply

Multiple portals? edit

This template is currently giving errors where multiple portals have been entered as parameters, e.g. [1]Fayenatic London 11:05, 5 November 2019 (UTC)Reply

@Fayenatic it has only ever been intended to link to one portal. It used to silently ignore other parameters, but in these two edits[2] to Module:Portal-inline I modified it to display an error message an add tracking to Category:Portal-inline template with more than one portal parameter. That allows any such errors to be tracked and fixed. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 15:46, 5 November 2019 (UTC)Reply
@BrownHairedGirl: Ah, I should have looked harder, as I know that is the sort of thing that you often do! Thanks. I see that the category is empty now. – Fayenatic London 16:53, 5 November 2019 (UTC)Reply
Thanks, Fayenatic. Your note was a helpful reminder, because I had forgotten to do the cleanup after one run of BHGbot. So I got to and fixed it. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 16:56, 5 November 2019 (UTC)Reply
