Possible wider usage

I am willing to create a separate, fully-translated version of the template for world-wide, general topographical use, called something like "Template:Height (topographical)" or "Template:Height (terrain)", but only if it will be used as it would be a fair bit of work. --Bermicourt (talk) 21:33, 3 September 2008 (UTC)

Trivial use

I have had a look at a couple of uses of this template, and they were effectively a complicated way of appending an non-breaking space and "m", and putting the thousands separator in. Hi Rich. The purpose of this template is solely to streamline the transfer of geographical articles from German Wikipedia; otherwise every time it occurs, the translator has to stop and insert the English Wiki equivalent, slowing down the process and introducing errors. The template is very widely used as may be seen by the over 2,500 articles linked to it. A more viable alternative might be to use it as a shim (if that's the right word) that is then substituted as has been done for other such templates. I'm very happy with those sorts of changes as long as the template remains in place. What I really don't want to do is spend time replacing templates when I'm importing and translating articles. But happy with a team effort. Bermicourt (talk) 21:11, 26 March 2020 (UTC)

I want to display "above sea level" in all instances

Not putting in "list=true" causes the template to not say "above sea level", so on second and subsequent uses I have to chose one of:

1) use "list=true" so the reader won't have to be like "NHN... now what was that again?", but usually we don't keep linking to a term, and it looks a bit odd for a list, or

2) Not use "list=true", then you have the converse problem and benefit, or

3) Not using the template and just writing "above sea level" in text, which fine, except maybe the template should be used for maintenance purposes or something, or

4) Write like "above sea level NHN" and link NHN to Normalhöhennull, but then you don't have the template plus that is kludgy.

It seems that, link or not, why would you not want to display "above sea level" even if you don't want to keep linking to Normalhöhennull? It's the English Wikipedia. I mean this is not a huge deal, I'm just saying. Herostratus (talk) 05:49, 30 August 2024 (UTC)

Oh and also the article I came across in it had the obsolete "DE-NN" rather than "DE-NHN" which I suppose could be fixed. Hmmm it might be better to make so you have to specifically write "list-false" the editor did not use it even on the first use (tsk) and you can't google "nn" and I was totally at sea. Better to make the link always be there rather rather than not have it at first use. Herostratus (talk) 06:05, 30 August 2024 (UTC)
