Viral?

edit

I would agree that "What Does the Fox Say?" has gone viral. However that's a really mushy term and probably shouldn't be used in this article without being defined. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 98.232.26.108 (talk) 16:30, 7 September 2013 (UTC)Reply

"over 40 million views in 3 weeks", specific enough for ya? :p Divinity76 (talk) 13:50, 20 September 2013 (UTC)Reply

The term "viral" is defined in the corresponding wikipedia article, which is hotlinked to in this article. So no problem. unsigned — Preceding unsigned comment added by 194.19.102.35 (talk) 10:46, 30 September 2013 (UTC)Reply

Pronunciation

edit

Can someone knowledgeable about Norwegian explain how "Ylvis" should be pronounced? —Arthaey (talk) 23:44, 10 September 2013 (UTC)Reply

I also think the article should say how to pronounce that, it's one of the main things I still want to know about them, how to say their duo's name, or the name "Ylvisåker". Walterego (talk) 13:57, 11 September 2013 (UTC)Reply
I don't know IPA, but it's pronounced like "Elvis", only with the y-sound from "synchronize" instead of the e. You can hear them say it themselves here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zW87HkQ-510&t=4m25s — Preceding unsigned comment added by 84.208.134.213 (talk) 00:13, 13 September 2013 (UTC)Reply
Ylvisåker is pronounced "Ylvisoker" with an "o" like in "overall" or "open". BTW have removed discussion of international spelling from this article, and instead linked to the relevant wikipedia page for the scandinavian 'Å' character. 194.19.102.35 (talk) 11:32, 30 September 2013 (UTC)Reply
On Jimmy Fallon last night he prounounced it like 'Eel-vis' — Preceding unsigned comment added by 50.47.16.42 (talk) 19:43, 10 October 2013 (UTC)Reply
Roughly [ˈʉl.ʋɪs], and their surname [ˈʉl.ʋɪs.ˈ(ʔ)ɔː.kɨr]. High central rounded vowel has a boxy kind of rounding, high central unrounded vowel should be lowered and is quite schwa-like. This, I think, approximates the pronunciation in Standard Østnorsk / educated Oslo speech. Can't really provide a citation, but now you know :) 5.67.189.133 (talk) 16:10, 15 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

Is the name, in fact, etymologically RELATED to the name Elvis? As in, Johann vs. John or Pierre vs. Peter?

Does "-aker" break off, in the way that various "-ssen" or "-dottir" suffixes do? Is the name overall something like "Elvisson" in English?

I assumed it was a STAGE NAME until reading the article.... 209.172.25.140 (talk) 02:26, 30 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

The name isn't related to Elvis (as far as I know). That was just an example on how to pronounce it (and replacing the E with Y). The ending -åker means field in Norwegian. No idea what Ylvis- comes from, but it could be a name of an old person that lived on that field, or it could be some (old norse) combination of yl/ylv and vis/is or something. As said, I have no idea. But that said, it wouldn't surprise me at all if the brothers did in fact choose Ylvis because of the how similar to Elvis it is spelled. -Rinellie (talk) 22:06, 12 October 2014 (UTC)Reply

Trailer parodies

edit

Another area of their comedy work is the production of fake movie/tv show trailers. I only know of three (in English, at least) -- Jaques et Florine, The Sixties, and Maximum Gardening (see http://ylvisinenglish.wordpress.com/fake-trailers/). The Sixties seems perhaps a parody of Mad Men (going by what I've heard of the show; never seen it myself), and Maximum Gardening is a mockumentary of gardening as an "extreme" sport, while Jaques et Florine pokes fun of both pretentious "art films" and movie critics. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.66.77.13 (talk) 03:46, 21 February 2014 (UTC)Reply

Singles is all dashes

edit

That "Singles" chart is a bit silly because they only had the one hit song. The matrix is all dashes except for that one line. Chris Arnesen 14:11, 26 June 2014 (UTC)Reply
