editI'm getting ready to beef up this article a bit. For anyone who might be interested, here are some useful sources:
Phonology, Critical Concepts in Linguistics, Volume 1. Written by M.A.K. Halliday In chapter three of this work there is a fairly thorough treatment of the layout of Xu Shen's Shuowen Jiezi. I think it would be a good resource for a section on Xu Shen's methods. Very sparse biographical Information
Chinese Lexicography: A History from 1046 BC to 1911. Written by Yong Heming. An exhaustive source on the history of Chinese writing. Written by a Chinese scholar in English. Goes much more in depth, giving the cultural and historical situations that led to the dictionaries creation. Also references a biography of Xu Shen in the classic "Book of the Later Han" (5th century). I should be able to find a translation.
Language and Society as seen by Xu Shen, an Ancient Chinese Lexicographer. Written by Xu Guozhang. This is an article published in the International Journal of the Sociology of Language. Volume 1990, Issue 8. B.C. apparently has this in its collection.
Original work by Xu Shen himself: There are several different titles which I have come across. The most important is obviously the dictionary itself. Xu Shen wrote a preface which would be fruitful to read... maybe I can find it in English... or even modern Chinese. He also wrote an interpretative dictionary of the 5 Classics. Not sure if this will be of much use besides as a topic in its own right on the page. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Seeaphone (talk • contribs) 02:10, 23 February 2017 (UTC)
