Kelley

"he learned of category theory from the topology text of John L. Kelley"

I used the Kelley Topology text as an undergraduate in the 1960's and have no memory of any mention of categories in this text. (Baire category is discussed but that is an entirely different and unrelated use of the word.) I just looked at the book and, while I didn't and won't go through every page, I am virtually certain that category theory is not mentioned in it. Unless somebody can point me to a place in the book where it is discussed, I intend to come back to the article and remove the reference to Kelley. Dagme (talk) 00:45, 30 January 2011 (UTC)

It sounds like a quote of what lawvere himself may have said. I would look for a source rather than deleting it. Tkuvho (talk) 10:09, 30 January 2011 (UTC)

The reference to Kelley does not sound like anything because it is text. If Lawvere said this, the author should document it. I am not going to look for a source. That is the responsibility of anyone who wants to justify retaining it. Removing the reference to Kelley will not make the article wrong or even substantially change it. The only effect will be the removal of an almost certain mistake. Maybe categories were mentioned in "Linear Topological Spaces", Kelley's functional analysis text (with Namioka).

Death

The announcement of Lawvere's death has been via the 'categories' mailing list, which doesn't seem to have a web archive that can be pointed to. Not sure what source can be used right now, but the announcement was made by his family, so it's not in doubt.
