It seems clear that Tukmakov was awarded the GM title in 1972, as both his FIDE rating card and Chess Personalia (Gaige, 1987) agree on this year. Curiously the first official FIDE rating list in July 1971 has a "g" by his name, seemingly indicating that he was already a GM at that time. I don't fully understand those July 1971 listings, because logically, it must have been the 1972 Skopje FIDE Congress that ratified his title. Siegen's 1970 FIDE Congress proposed the new Dorazil system for awarding titles based on tournament results and he may have had the necessary results on that system already, or at least shortly thereafter - eg. 2nd to Fischer at Buenos Aires 1970, 2nd at the 1970 USSR Ch., 4th= ahead of Tal, Spassky at Alekhine Mem 1971 etc. This may explain why he was credited with the title in these early lists. However, Sunnucks (2nd Ed.) is another entry for 1972 and I am usually pursuaded by Kazic's official record of FIDE events when it comes to these early titles - he too says 1972. On a side but somewhat related note, Brittle heaven, if you have information on requirements for the GM title from around 1970 and later it would be great if you would add some details to Grandmaster (chess)#Official status (1950 onwards). I added some details on the rules changes from 1950 through 1965 as those were the only years I had a source for. Then the article basically has a 45 year gap until today. It's particularly unfortunate that it doesn't cover the introduction of Elo ratings-based requirements. Quale (talk) 05:39, 18 November 2010 (UTC)Reply
