According to the German article and http://geboren.am/person/Uwe_Hohn he was born in Neuruppin not Rheinsberg. He is also listed under Söhne und Töchter Neuruppins (sons and daughter of Neuruppin) http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neuruppin#Pers.C3.B6nlichkeiten.

Intrigued by this story of the man who threw too far, I looked for supplementary material. I found one assertion that another person actually threw more than 100m as early as 1966, using an unorthodox technique:

"In 1966 the javelin was thrown over 100 meters (328 feet) by a Spaniard who employed a discus style turn before the throw. This throwing style was deemed unsafe and subsequently banned by the International Amateur Athletic Federation (IAAF). The 100 meter mark was once again broken in 1984. The IAAF then adopted new rules to ensure shorter flight times. "

That's from a web site that appears to be related to a children's book about aerodynamics. (javelin aerodynamics) I haven't seen another source with the name of the 1966 thrower, however.

I can imagine the IAAF had some discussion about the safety issue of +100m throws. It might be nice to include a quote about that, if anyone can dig up something relevant from the '80s.
