Name selection edit

The name was selected after a careful search of possible candidates to it, so naming conflicts do not arise. I have to clarify that I'm trying to follow as close as possible the rules specified in the article guidelines. First I have to mention that in this case, the name Valle should not be translated to english (Valley), since it correspond to the name of a departmental entity, and not a geographical feature. Then, the word is a proper name, that should not be translated. Following that argument, the university name should not include the word the either. Then the possible name of University of the Valley is discarded for this institution, while several others can claim it. For this reason this disambiguation page was created. The Spanish name is more difficult to assert. In this case, several universities can qualify for the name, but some uses a full geographical feature in its name, which can be seen in the Universities of the Valley of Guatemala and of the Valley of Mexico. For this reason this disambiguation page was created. The hyperlink to the university from this page was changed to Universidad del Valle (Colombia), which follows the article guidelines. I hope this clarifies the situation. -Andremun (talk) 20:37, 17 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Feedback edit

Please add feedback comments in this section. The article has changed substantially and requires reassessment. Regards -Andremun (talk) 13:21, 19 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

  • I think the copy-edit template could be removed, the article doesn't have big problems in that regard. Also, the Noted people section should be converted to prose and maybe the list of rectors should be split into a separate list article. Overall, the main task would be to add more citations and I'd suggest using 2 columns in References section so it looks acceptable on lower resolution screens. --Canaima (talk) 22:29, 20 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Student Activism edit

This subject is controversial. I've tried to find out the best way to approach this issue, but I'll try to be impartial. As part of the university community, I'm against the radicalization of the student movement. I'll try to add some sources about this particular issue. I would appreciate any help in the contents of this section. Andremun (talk) 04:44, 1 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Maps edit

Files for the maps can be found in the following links: Melendez Campus and San Fernando Campus. I'll be glad to help in the translation of the names from Spanish. -Andremun (talk) 14:49, 22 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Diagrams edit

Some diagrams are needed for the Organization section. A general organization diagram can be found in this file. Other diagrams for the faculties, institutes, and other dependencies can be found in this file. I'll be glad to help in the translation of the names from Spanish. -Andremun (talk) 15:32, 29 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Some feedback edit

This article is so much better than it was last time I looked (around a month ago?). Good job Andremun! I decided to reply to your request for additional feedback on this page.

  • "Also, it is host for an excellence research center, 6 research centers, 3 research institutes, and 276 research groups." Something is not right with that sentence. For one, it doesn't really expound or clarify on what "excellence research center" means. Additionally "it is host for" doesn't really work (grammatically).
  • If you're trying to get this to GA (it is coming along nicely towards that direction), then I would suggest having at least 1 ref per paragraph (at least). The first paragraph of the "History" section doesn't have a ref in it at all. Ditto for the third paragraph (and there are several others at a quick glance).
  • "At this early stage, the university faced its first financial crisis, a situation that was preceded by the destitution of the rector Ramírez in 1949, and that almost ended in its closure in 1950." - You could probably expound upon how Ramírez was involved in the school's financial crisis. As the sentence is now, I'm not sure if Ramírez' financial stuff is correlated to the school's crisis or not. The sentence is kind of ambiguous.
  • Wherever you've said "begun" should be replaced with "began". I caught a couple of them, but there's more throughout the article. If you wanna say "begun", you have to preface that word with "had" (since begun is a past participal, and needs a supporting verb in front of it), otherwise use "began" (past tense verb). Are you a native Spanish speaker? Puedo hablar en espanol tambien.

I've only read the article through the "History" section. I have to go now, but I'll finish either tomorrow or in a couple days (depending on when I find the time). Right now the article is looking great. I like that you've sourced a lot of stuff. The most impressive thing to me is the great structure of the text. It flows pretty well and the ideas connect (from what I've seen). This is definitely an improved article from the last time I read it! Killiondude (talk) 08:09, 27 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Alright, I've got some time to continue my review of the page.

  • "The university also has eight satellite campuses in other cities of the Valle del Cauca Department and one in the Cauca Department." Did you mean to say "district" instead of "department"? Its unclear to me what the intended meaning is. Si necessites explicar en espanol (a me), puedes :-)
  • When you wikilink things, it is generally a rule that you wikilink the term the first time it comes up in the article. So when you wikilinked "rector" in the "Organization" section, it should actually not be linked there, but the first time much earlier in the article. Ditto for any other similar instances.

Gah. Okay. I'm still not done. I didn't get enough time (again) to finish... I'm not generally one who picks up something and doesn't finish, but that keeps happening with this article. I promise I'll finish reviewing it soon! Killiondude (talk) 08:56, 29 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Hello! Thanks for your feedback. Well, about the Cauca Department stuff. Colombia is divided in departments (which could be compared with the states in the US). The departments are divided in municipalities (compared to counties). Then, the university has small campuses in different cities in its area of influence. I hope this helps out. -Andremun (talk) 15:12, 29 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
Oh, okay. I didn't know that. Sorry. I'll continue with the feedback now.
  • "About 53% of the test takers obtain a score in the top 75% in that year's examination, and 40 in average achieve a top 10 place." Do you mean to say "top 75 percentile" and "top 10 percentile"? Because as of right now, that doesn't make sense... I would change it myself, but I just wanted to check to see what you meant here.
  • "The university signed 86 cooperation agreements with educative and governmental institutions around the globe..." What exactly are these agreements for? Studying abroad? Transferring? You could/should probably explain this.
  • You need to un-wikilink all the dates in the article... its a new(er) thing on WP, that they don't link a date unless its very necessary. I caught some of them, but could you get the rest?
  • The "Student groups" section either needs to be expanded or merged with something else... the same thing goes for other subsections that only have a few sentences in them (Per this policy).
Done! You have done an excellent job with this article. I think the next step is for you to get it Peer Reviewed (sorta like my review above, but probably more in depth). Once their concerns are met, this could probably easily pass a Good Article Review. Let me know if you need any help on this at all, I really liked reading about the university. Its nice to have stuff of this quality about subjects other than US and European related things. Killiondude (talk) 00:42, 30 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
Hello! Thanks for your feedback. I really appreciate the effort that you put in it. As for the ECAES comment, it would be top 75 percentile and top 10 place (not percentile). I want to make sure this information is well presented. As I understand, it means that more than the 50% of the students that take the test are on top of the 75 percentile. And 40 every year get a place in the top 10 of each major. I'm not exactly sure how many majors present the test, but I know that at least one student for each mayor gets in the top 10 of the years exam. I don't know if this clarifies the issue. Thank you again for the feedback. I'll recheck for the issues that you mentioned, and most of all, I'll try to finish the history section. -Andremun (talk) 03:23, 30 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Faculties of Agronomy, Commerce, and Infirmary edit

(In the History section). Should these be Agriculture, Business and Nursing respectively? Agronomy is a real field, but is rather too specific for a faculty, I think. Commerce is believable, but I would tend to go with Business. Infirmary is another name for 'hospital' in English, so this isn't right. I initially thought Medicine, but that comes later — could this be Nursing? Spudtater (talkcontribs) 17:53, 8 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

Hello! Thanks for your edits. I know what you mean. But at these early times, the faculties were named for these narrow fields, which later on would become departments or schools. I'll change the infirmary to nursing and commerce to business. I had to change the 40% to 40 again in the student profile, since this number would be wrong. I'm not sure how to change it to make this information clear. -Andremun (talk) 00:24, 11 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

Reassessment request edit

This is regarding the old request at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Universities/Assessment: looks to already have been re-assessed and we can't go higher than B. For further improvements, I would break that first paragraph into two paragraphs as it is way too long, and the "See also" section contains red links (see WP:SEEALSO). That's it from a quick scan. Article status edit

Andremun (talk · contribs) asked me to review the article. I said I would read it within the next few days, but that was several days ago now. I just had a chance to read through the first third of the article as a whole. It looks good so far, but I haven't had experience in getting things to GA class. I will note, however, that the [citation needed] tag will definitely be an issue for if this were to be reviewed for GA right now. So either a source has to be found, or the sentence modified to fit with whatever sources are available (or removed completely). Also, I would advice starting a peer review before taking this to WP:GAN. Its not required, but it definitely helps. I'll still try to read through the rest of the article, but I just wanted to give this little bit of info. Killiondude (talk) 06:30, 10 July 2009 (UTC)Reply
