They're all fair use pictures, not free ones (well, the satellite picture is, but we have two of those already). I know that the fair use criteria allows us to use some low-res photos, but I'm not sure if that extends to press photos like those (I can do everything else, but I don't do a lot in the image department). --Coredesat talk. ^_^ 00:09, 14 August 2006 (UTC)

True, didn't really expect much else. I'm not hot on FU either, though I think I will get much better soon. Any free images will likely appear on zh.wiki if anywhere (self-made). Oh and when the NRL pic comes off the main page (and is unprotected) can someone please crop it? PAGASA

I noticed that the Philippines has contributed names to JTWC for naming tropical storms/typhoons in the Western Pacific. Why then would they feel the need to change it when it enters their "area of responsibility"? Since they agreed to contribute these names in the first place, they should at least go with the current name to avoid confusion. Anybody know why they do it this way?Jlujan69 05:17, 14 August 2006 (UTC)

They feel that their residents will pay more attention to the warning if it is a name they recognize. The PAGASA name is only used in the Philippines and is not used by any other countries in official weather reports, so no confusion should arise. --Holderca1 17:58, 16 August 2006 (UTC)

Internation response

I am glad to talk with you about this entry.The major idea i wrote the international response is to rose the righteousness of people.When the Hurricane Katrina took place, nearly all the countries offered to aid the Americans. Comparing with the more poor chinese, they received nothing, I didn't see any reports which give a mere little commiseration. WP:NPOV, and WP:CITE, and WP:V, which means that it must be neutral, must be cited, and must be verifiable. It also violates style guidelines. Comparing the two, they are not very similar, Katrina caused more than $80 billion USD, Saomai caused $1.5 billion USD, Katrina killed over 1,800, Saomai killed over 300. When earthquake/tsunami struck southeast Asia, many countries offered aid. --Holderca1 18:07, 16 August 2006 (UTC)

I think the vast difference in casualties has to do with better prediction of the storm, and better evacuation of the areas that were determined to be affected. Malamockq 20:27, 16 August 2006 (UTC)

You are making a statement that is against your argument. If a Katrina like event hit China, the death toll would likely be in the tens of thousands due to lower building strength and more densly populated. --Holderca1 13:02, 31 August 2006 (UTC)

GA Sweeps Review: Pass

As part of the WikiProject Good Articles, we're doing sweeps to go over all of the current GAs and see if they still meet the GA criteria. I'm specifically going over all of the "Meteorology and atmospheric sciences" articles. I believe the article currently meets the criteria and should remain listed as a Good article.
