How many people took a bullet for the president? edit

In the article about Leslie_Coffelt, four agents are noted for taking a bullet for the president. Three at the Trueman shooting and Tim McCarthy. So who is right? As far as I understand, only Tim McCarthy really prevented a shooting at the president. At the Truman shooting, the President was in another room still. Correct me if I'm wrong :) --Smordi83 (talk) 15:14, 16 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

You're wrong. Truman's presence in another room is irrelevant...it WAS an assassination attempt on him. Coffelt, Birdzell, and Downs were all wounded (Coffelt fatally) during this assassination attempt. Thus, all 3 took bullets for Pres. Truman. McCarthy's distinction in this is that he was the only one of the 4 to take a hit while his President was being directly assaulted. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 96.247.47.85 (talk) 07:25, 29 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

I think the distinction is that there is a difference between being shot protecting the President and taking a bullet for the president. The difference is who is the shooter trying to kill with the bullet you were hit by. If the shooter aims at a secret service person then that person was certainly shot protecting the president, but you didn't take a bullet for him. To take a bullet for him you have to put yourself between the shooter and his intended target knowing that the bullet which hits you doesn't hit its intended target. I've been trying to resolve this (sort of), but I can't find any sources specifically backing up the statement that only four agents have been shot protecting the president. This source says "12 Secret Service agents, police officers, pilots and members of presidential cabinets have been injured or killed while on duty to protect the president." It mentions McCarthy and Leslie Coffelt by name. This source from Ghosts of DC names the other two officers at the Truman assassination attempt as Joseph Downs and Donald Birdzell. Coffelt, Birdzell, and Downs were all members of the White House Police Force, which has been part of the Secret Service since 1930, so it's fair to call them Secret Service agents. So now we have four shot while stopping a presidential assassin (I'm not going to make a distinction between taking a bullet meant for the president and taking a bullet in keeping an assassin away from the president). But is that all of them? The Vocativ article I linked doesn't specify how many of the killed or wounded were Secret Service. Five people were shot (one fatally) when Giuseppe Zangara tried to assassinate FDR in 1933, but no source I can find lists any of them as Secret Service agents. I'll have to do some more research. clpo13(talk) 22:22, 23 August 2016 (UTC)Reply
