Talk:The Real Thing (British band)

Band name; move disputed edit

This article was moved to "Real Thing" with the rationale that "moved The Real Thing (group) to Real Thing (group): all their albums are clearly credited to "Real Thing"". I don't think that has been established and would like to see consensus for this move. For example, the cover at File:YouToMeAreEverything.jpg is very clearly attributed to "The Real Thing". The band refers to themselves as "The Real Thing" on their official website ("The Real Thing is an English pop music group formed in 1970.") They are called "The Real Thing" at Allmusic. They are called "The Real Thing" in The Virgin Encyclopedia of 70s Music. --Moonriddengirl (talk) 00:22, 4 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

In addition, the British Hit Singles & Albums book - generally regarded as the 'bible' of British pop music - describes them as "The Real Thing". All more compelling evidence to me than record sleeves which, in my lengthy experience, are at best notoriously unreliable. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Derek R Bullamore (talkcontribs) 4 April 2011
Record sleeves are first hand information. Initially (1973 releases onwards), they did use the "The", but still *all* their studio albums (five, 1976-1980) are credited to "Real Thing" only, they deliberately dropped the "The", the band had a logo "Real Thing", just browse though the discogs entry http://www.discogs.com/artist/Real+Thing%2C+The
  • Real Thing (1976) (by Real Thing)
  • 4 From 8 (1977) (by Real Thing)
  • Step Into Our World (1978) (by Real Thing)
  • Can You Feel The Force (1979) (by Real Thing)
  • Saints Or Sinners? (1980) (by Real Thing)
  • The Real Thing Live (1998) (don't know, posthumous release?) — Preceding unsigned comment added by E-Kartoffel (talkcontribs) 4 April 2011
It seems that the band may have gone back and forth. Allmusic is missing a lot of their covers, but we can see the cover of at least one version of "Can You Feel the Force" there, and they are definitely billed there as "The Real Thing". The band's official website (linked above), wherein they refer to themselves as "The Real Thing", is contemporary. This 2008 and this 2006 compilation were released under "The Real Thing." Discog's main listing is under "The Real Thing". It may be appropriate to mention the name flipflop in the article, but I think per WP:COMMONNAME, this is the appropriate place for the listing, with a redirect from "Real Thing". --Moonriddengirl (talk) 12:38, 4 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

  • Oppose. As I understand it, this article should not use "band" in the title because it's creates confusion with The Real Thing (jazz band). Jenks24 (talk) 17:02, 18 October 2011 (UTC)Reply
  • Oppose. Per Jenks. Since there is more than one band with the name, band alone is not an adequate disambiguator, unless it is the primary topic for the name among all bands that use this name. That case has not been made here. --Born2cycle (talk) 18:47, 18 October 2011 (UTC)Reply
