Spoilers

edit

I don't know what constitutes spoilers so I only included what would probably be found on the movie cover. I suppose wikipedia is not the place, but I have to comment on the unease that permeates the movie, and how you both hate and hope for Milland. You even catch a glimpse of why he could be great, and what he sees in the alcohol. --Ignignot 17:27, 3 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

Reference to novel may be inaccurate

edit

I happen to own the novel and I believe the reference in this article to the author/protagonist having an "affair" with someone in college is inaccurate. I recall it more as a homosexual infatuation. Can anyone reference a specific page in the book where it is described as an affair? A great book but I'd hate to have to pour through it again for that reference.--Mantanmoreland 23:47, 3 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Homosexuality is a sub-theme to the novel that was left out (censorship being what it was in the 1940s)of the film. Don's alcoholism is partly motivated by insecurity over his latent homosexuality. In the book and not the film: the medical orderly "Bim" makes a pass at Don. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Opusv5 (talkcontribs) 19:53, 6 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

They managed to introduce the issue anyway, in a way that got by the censors. Don's first words to the bartender early in the film are to ask for his hand in marriage, jokingly. Wastrel Way (talk) Eric

Rental store in SF?

edit

There is a movie rental store on Valencia Street in San Francisco named "Lost Weekend". Can anyone confirm that the store is named after this film? --130.20.185.186 (talk) 08:32, 14 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

It's trivia in any case. Bmclaughlin9 (talk) 13:58, 14 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

Reception

edit

It would be interesting to see what some of the critics said about it. Valetude (talk) 09:06, 21 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

"But all the pawnshops are closed for Yom Kippur."

edit

This is an interesting side bit to the film. Is the implication that all of the pawnbrokers in New York at the time were supposed to be Jewish? That would be a pretty remarkable affirmation to make.Partnerfrance (talk) 20:00, 13 March 2018 (UTC)Reply

I was also befuddled by that - in particular the line (paraphrasing here): "We have an arrangement; they close on Yom Kippur, and we don't open on St. Patrick's." Who are they? Who are we? And what are they agreeing to not open on St. Patrick's Day? LegalTech (talk) 18:52, 26 August 2019 (UTC)Reply

Jewish pawnbrokers (Yom Kippur) and presumably Irish pawnbrokers (St Patrick's Day). From memory, the name of the other pawnbroker is Irish. Hanoi Road (talk) 16:24, 3 September 2019 (UTC)Reply

Proposed deletion of 'Film Noir' in lede.

edit

Film Noir defines a subculture of film that broadly deals with serious crime/murder/detective adaptations, an example being The Maltese Falcon. The Lost Weekend is not remotely in that category. I propose deletion of this term. Any objections? Hanoi Road (talk) 16:29, 3 September 2019 (UTC)Reply

Hanoi Road, no objections. It looks like "drama" is the primary genre for the film. Erik (talk | contrib) (ping me) 16:46, 3 September 2019 (UTC)Reply
"Drama" is fine, but it does have quite a number of film noir elements. A large part of the story is told in flashbacks, and Don's character is clearly hopeless. Don steals the cleaning woman's money, if you want some crime, however minor. It is classified as film noir on several internet sites devoted to the genre. The wikipedia article addresses the issue, saying "the problem of classification: one of the first American films to be described as a film noir, it has largely disappeared from considerations of the field." (That could probably be better phrased.) Wastrel Way (talk) Eric

– Nominated for seven Academy Awards and winner of four — Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Director and Best Screenplay, this production also won Best Film at New York Film Critics Circle Awards, Golden Globes, Cannes Film Festival and numerous other awards. Thus, it is the clear WP:PRIMARYTOPIC — created in March 2002 and remained primary until December 2007 when it was unilaterally moved to The Lost Weekend (film). There are only four other entries titled "The Lost Weekend" — the out-of-print novel upon which the film is based, two redirects to TV episodes and a stub for a 1985 album. As for the disambiguation page, there are 12 entries listed upon The Lost Weekend disambiguation page, with six using "The Lost Weekend" and six using "Lost Weekend". Thus, it would seem, per WP:THE, since the main title header The Lost Weekend is not predominant, it would be more intuitive as Lost Weekend. — Roman Spinner (talkcontribs) 06:01, 14 April 2023 (UTC)Reply

  • Support 2nd per WP:DABNAME. Crouch, Swale (talk) 18:12, 14 April 2023 (UTC)Reply
  • Oppose first move. The film is definitely the most notable topic with the name, and it gets more usage than any single other topic with the name, but it doesn't get more usage than all the others combined. See the Wikinav data for March [1]: the dab entry for the film got 118 clicks, with the entries for Lennon, the song and the novel getting respectively 36, 26 and 19 clicks (the other entries would have each received less than 10 hits; the total views of the dab page for the same period were 311 [2]). However, most of the contending topics use the form without a definite article, so if you're in favour of applying WP:SMALLDIFFS here, then the film will almost certainly be the primary topic. I support the move of the dab page to Lost Weekend, per WP:DABNAME. – Uanfala (talk) 21:39, 14 April 2023 (UTC)Reply
Since the Oscar-winning Best Picture–Actor–Director–Screenplay is the WP:PRIMARYTOPIC for "The Lost Weekend", it would be counterintuitive for The Lost Weekend to redirect to the Lost Weekend disambiguation page. Users researching the iconic film should be able to access it directly, while those searching for "Lost Weekend" would go likewise directly to the Lost Weekend dab page. A hatnote atop the film's entry would, of course, also point to the Lost Weekend dab. —Roman Spinner (talkcontribs) 17:02, 15 April 2023 (UTC)Reply
