Disputing Three Million Sales

edit

It's important to note that the source given for the three million sold figure says that this figure is alleged, and can not be confirmed. While I would not go so far as to say it's outright not true given that other sources put it in the ballpark of 10,000 or 20,000 thousand sold it seems unlikely that this casual statement is fact.

The TV Tennis Electrotennis was released in 1975. To put it in perspective, the 1976 Coleco Telstar series sold over one million consoles, and the Nintendo 1977 Color TV Game sold three million consoles in Japan. The TV Tennis Electrotennis does not have the benefit of successful followup consoles like Coleco and Nintendo, but you would expect more articles, photos, and general coverage of the TV Tennis Electrotennis if it really sold that well. Furthermore, it's not unusual for the first product in a given market to not sell well. Given the fact that the source of the three million statement itself felt unsure about the figure, it's hard not to doubt that number.

The Japanese article mentions 1万台 or 10,000 units. A quick search for テレビテニス売上 (TV Tennis sales) show this 1万 figure all over Japanese media. I feel confident that the number is nowhere 3,000,000 units. I could see 10,000 units sold and 20,000 units produced but 3M seems like a translation error gone wrong.
