Old pictures?

Might be worth including a few more historical pictures, especially those predating the 60's. (this is more a note to myself to start looking for older photographs) 98.5.44.98 (talk) 21:52, 24 July 2023 (UTC)

There are some extant ones, it's just a question of if pulling them from Columbus Metropolitan Library and uploading them here would result in copyright issues, or if they're fair use / public domain.

I'm on mobile right now, so can't do this directly, but I've been working to have these library photos uploaded to Wikipedia en-masse. We're at almost 100,000 images now. See here for some good old photos of the cathedral ready to use. ɱ (talk) 00:06, 25 July 2023 (UTC)

Oh, great. Would something like this [1] be able to be uploaded to Wikimedia on is own? +Herrmmann does not have a photo on his own page and so that would be quite a nice addition.

Additionally, there is this [2] set of really quality photos showing an intermediate period in the Cathedral's interior design before the renovations prompted by Vatican II.

It looks like generally, no, these images are marked as "In Copyright". The one exception is, you could upload them to the English Wikipedia itself, but only as a WP:FAIRUSE image. This means that if there is no other image, say, of Bishop Herrmann, that is free to use, you may use the image a minimal number of times, and "only if its presence would significantly increase readers' understanding of the article topic, and its omission would be detrimental to that understanding." See the above link for further qualifications. Bibliographical articles are great examples of a good use that is almost always accepted, as long as no other free image exists or could be taken. See here, but also see that even though the The Columbus Citizen-Journal closed, it is still under the ownership of the active E. W. Scripps Company. You can attempt to contact Scripps and ask if they still want to maintain copyright control over CCJ images, but I would be surprised if you hear a reply. It seems "PhotOhio" attempts to make money off of commercial uses of these images, which makes it less likely someone will want to give that up and make them all Public Domain. ɱ (talk) 18:36, 25 July 2023 (UTC)

Alternatively, there are also other copyright loopholes that can make images fall into the public domain. See Commons:Hirtle chart.
