Silicone Valley (disambiguation) → Silicone Valley – It seems unnecessary to have the present level of indirection. The former redirect at Silicone Valley was created under the (mistaken) assumption that there were no other valid topics besides Silicon Valley under this name. • Support per the very public discussion at Talk:Silicon Valley#Hatnote. This is one of several a priori reasonable setups, and the only one which guarantees that people spelling "Silicon Valley" correctly don't get a hatnote link to a porn-related article. Hans Adler 20:52, 13 January 2014 (UTC)
• Oppose: the move proposal misrepresents what happened. Silicone Valley (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views) was created as a redirect to San Fernando Valley. When it was brought to RfD, there was a consensus that the most common meaning was a misspelling of Silicon Valley. The closer agreed, I infer, with a comment in the RfD that the misspelling is much more common than the San Fernando Valley meaning, and redirected Silicone Valley to Silicon Valley. Now a third meaning has been identified [1], hence a disambiguation page is warranted. However, it hasn't been shown that the Dorćol meaning is the primary topic, or that there is no primary topic. I think it would be best if Silicone Valley redirected to Silicon Valley, with a hat-note on the Silicon Valley article pointing to [[Silicone Valley (disambiguation). —rybec 21:06, 13 January 2014 (UTC)
  • Well, you haven't really provided evidence that Silicon Valley is the primary meaning. It's not clear if "primary meaning" is supposed to include misspellings... Here's what google does for me: if I search "silicone valley" I get a page for silicon valley indeed, with a pointer for the silicone page [2]; but the proper page for silicone valley is mostly porn related [3]. Google won't however say anything about silicone valley if you search for silicon valley with the proper spelling, and the fist few pages of results under the proper spelling don't have anything about porn or the silicone pun. So I'm not seeing why Wikipedia should have such hints at top of the page for silicon valley... Someone searching for silicone valley might indeed be confused, but the likelihood of confusion in the opposite direction seems negligible enough that google doesn't think it worthwhile to consider hinting; so a hatnote at silicon valley is WP:UNDUE in my opinion. • Support - I'm in favor of pointing Silicone Valley at Silicon Valley. I finally did my own Google search and being located IN Silicon Valley was a little surprised at how often people misspell Silicon with an "E". If by "pointing at" you mean "redirecting to" then you oppose the move proposal. This proposal is to move Silicone Valley (disambiguation) over the Silicone Valley redirect, so that people entering the site through "Silicone Valley" would reach a disambiguation page. —rybec 23:05, 13 January 2014 (UTC)

• Oppose, people who look for Silicone Valley probably mean Silicon Valley (it is an easy mistake to make), and Silicon Valley is by far the most notable use of the term, enough to drown out all other uses. A redirect hatnote saying "for other uses see Silicone Valley (disambiguation)" would not be introducing anything unsavory to the article. - WPGA2345 - ☛ 22:25, 16 January 2014 (UTC)

Links to silicon and silicone

The super-prescriptive WP:MOSDAB (Include exactly one navigable (blue) link to efficiently guide readers to the most relevant article for that use of the ambiguous term. Do not wikilink any other words in the line.) is contradicted by WP:DABSTYLE which allows occasional exceptions: (Rarely should a bulleted entry have more than one navigable link; including more than one link can confuse the reader.) I'm claiming such an exception here for obvious reasons (we're talking about misspellings). Note that according to MOSDAB misspellings (like the Silicon Valley line) should actually go in a separate section, but that too seems unsuitable/overkill. We could of course use italics to emphasize the difference which (sigh of relief) MOSDAB doesn't prohibit (yet), but wiki links seem the most suitable method given that they provide the shortest path for the confused reader to find out the difference between the terms/notions. I fail to see how any of those links are relevant for disambiguating the term "Silicone Valley". That is, why would anyone want to navigate from the disambiguation page for "silicone valley" to these other unambiguous terms? older ≠ wiser 01:08, 14 January 2014 (UTC)

People may confuse "silicon" and "silicone", but they won't confuse "silicone breast implants" and "silicon chips". So no confusion can arise from dropping the links. I don't necessarily agree with the MOS requirement to drop such links, but it's not unreasonable and we don't have a special case here. Hans Adler 15:54, 14 January 2014 (UTC)
