In a previous, now archived section of this talk page, I had made a case for sub-headings. All the ones I added were removed by User:Elighthart who seems to think that he controls this article and has reverted almost everything I have done to it. Viva-Verdi (talk) 00:59, 12 October 2008 (UTC)

This article is at present a C. It contains a fair amount of good info but its organisation is greatly lacking. And some of the info is wrong or confusing. It requires:

• A proper introduction followed by a background, a history and description of the present building and a final section about its current status and use.

• References. There are only three properly formatted references. Where page numbers are inserted in the text, they need to be turned into proper references.

• The statement that the theatre was "designed by A....." and "designed by B....." is clumsy writing to say the very least. What does it mean? Does it mean that A and B designed it together? Does it mean that one was the architect and the other an interior designer? Does it mean that it was designed by one and built by the other? Or what? Please fix it.

• There is a statement that the space can hold several hundred, but when the orchestra is raised to the level of the stage, it can hold over 1,000. This doesn't sound right.

Here are some possibilities: When the orchestra pit is raised to the level of the auditorium (not the stage), then the building holds more people. Or, if the orchestra is not in a pit, but at a higher level, then lowering the orchestra level to the level of the auditorium would permit the building to hold more people. Either of these could be true, but it seems unlikely that having the orchestra at stage level create would create more space for audience. Please check this fact.

• What I want to know is, where is the Opera Theatre in relation to the palace itself? Is it freestanding? Was it built into the existing building? Is it a separate wing?

• There is a statement that it is entirely of wood, made to look like faux marble. Is this really true? Does it have external walls (which is the case, unless it was incorporated into an earlier structure)? Are these external walls of wood decorated as faux marble? The builind of the palce is limestone (as far as I recall). Is the whole exterior of the Opera really painted to look like marble? Or is this the interior that is being referred to?

This must refer to the inside shell of the building itself created inside a stone-faced structure, very typical of 18C opera houses. cf: La scala. Viva-Verdi (talk) 01:58, 15 August 2009 (UTC)

It's probably the interior. If so, then a good deal of the ornamentation might be stucco as well as wood. "Faux marble" might be just painted on, but on the other hand, the decorators might have used a more sophisticted technique of impregnating colours in plaster, and then polishing it.

• There is a statement that since its restoration, the building has been used for a variety of events. This, however, does not indicate the present situation, that the opera has a regular and ongoing program of performance, open to ordinary paying customers.

Rename to Royal Opera

Royal Opera is the name used in the 2000 edition of the official Versailles Visitor's Guide written by the curators Béatrix Saule and Daniel Meyer. Although the French version, Opéra Royal, is sometimes used in other English-language books, I thought it was better to give preference to the English version of the name. --Robert.Allen (talk) 19:36, 1 August 2015 (UTC)
