He was also a specialist in Middle East affairs, having served there, and is known as the translator of The Travels of Ibn Jubayr (London, 1952)]

But on Ibn Jubayr, it says the English translator was Roland Broadhurst. Also

He may also have been the model for the Brigadier in Dr Who in the 1970s. which seems very unlikely.
