Requested move
editAlthough it is useful to have a disambiguation page for this term, it seems clear that Rail transport is the primary topic. It is therefore proposed to move this page to Railroad (disambiguation) and to make Railroad a redirect to rail transport. Please comment below. --Russ (talk) 15:29, 1 June 2008 (UTC)
- Oppose resultant re-redirect, neutral on rename. It's clear that there is no primary topic. If the move is done, Railroad should remain a disambiguation page. That being said, there's no harm in the move if the redirect were protected. — Arthur Rubin (talk) 14:05, 4 June 2008 (UTC)
- Could you please explain why you say it is "clear" that there is no primary topic? Nearly all the pages linking to Railroad would have to be re-targeted to Rail transport if this were the case. And it seems clear to me, just from looking at the topics, that most of them are simply special cases or subsets of Rail transport. --Russ (talk) 10:53, 8 June 2008 (UTC)
- Even if most of them were "simply special cases or subsets of Rail transport, there might still not be a primary topic, if different subsets were intended. But I really don't see it is accurate. — Arthur Rubin (talk) 15:18, 8 June 2008 (UTC)
- I guess I'm just not understanding you. Could you explain why you come to these conclusions, instead of just saying what your conclusions are? --Russ (talk) 21:08, 8 June 2008 (UTC)

- Support - primary topic; this is a perfect case for primary topic. The Evil Spartan (talk) 14:34, 7 June 2008 (UTC)
- Support "rail transport" (which is actually a bit of a foreign usage to me, being a descendant of a railroad family) was exactly what I was looking for when I came to this page today. --Gvsualan (talk) 16:12, 7 June 2008 (UTC)
- Support unless clarified why there is clearly no primary topic? The above explanation was unclear to me, and it certainly seems, to me, that the primary topic would be Rail transport. Since I am not an expert in this field, though, I am certainly open to hearing why that may be false. I think that we should still have this page at Railroad (disambiguation), but it seems like all of the links on the page would be the desired topic of many fewer people than Rail transport would be.-- Natalya 21:11, 8 June 2008 (UTC)
- support - even the wiktionary page for "Railroad" lists the meaning of rail transport as the primary meaning. I find it interesting, however, that the fourth verb definition listed there is not mentioned here. Slambo (Speak) 22:17, 8 June 2008 (UTC)
- Perhaps there's just not an encyclopedic article on it yet? Unless there's an article (or related one), after all, disambiguation pages shouldn't have dictionary defitions on them. I hadn't thought of that meaning of it before, though - it's interesting. -- Natalya 01:43, 9 June 2008 (UTC)

Meanings of the word relating to rail transport
editAs I see it, railroad and railway are quite synonymous. In my opinion, in the context of the heading displayed above, Wiktionary gives three different meanings for these words:
- A permanent road consisting of fixed metal rail.
In my mind, close enough to Track (rail transport)
- A single, privately or publicly owned property comprising one or more such roads and usually associated assets.
I'd say something close to Railway company, but not quite. Some tinkering with the article and it would do, IMHO.
- A single transportation system fitted to travel on rails, usually operated with trains.
As I view a system, everything that goes under the header of Rail transport does not take part in the same (railway)system.
That being said, can someone convince me that instead of redirectin Railroad and Railway here, redirecting them to Rail transport is logical or helpful to the user? -Junior Woodchuck (talk) 16:45, 16 January 2014 (UTC)
Proposed merge
edit"Railways" is merely the common plural of "Railway". There is no need for two separate pages here. bd2412 T 16:00, 25 November 2015 (UTC)
