Said by who? edit

Movie studio executives are said to have been less than impressed at the prospect of releasing a passionate embrace between Farrell, then 28, and the then-14-year-old Q'Orianka. It is said that they ordered the scene to be trimmed to avoid releasing child pornography.

Some evidence please? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Brodey (talkcontribs) 19 January 2006

You got it:

"Sex and the Single Squaw by Jessica Winter December 19th, 2005 6:58 PM

Terrence Malick's The New World is an anxious object, a $30 million art movie about the much disputed and misappropriated tale of John Smith and Pocahontas, and as such it's appropriately rife with conflict: man versus the elements, hometown Indians versus English interlopers, nature-trance contemplation versus smokin' action sequences. Perhaps the most palpable tension for the filmmakers derived from the nature of the relationship between Jamestown settler Smith and Pocahontas, his Algonquian Indian ally and supposed lover. Reportedly, studio lawyers insisted that love scenes between Colin Farrell and then 14-year-old Q'orianka Kilcher be reshot to ensure compliance with child pornography laws."

"December 19, 2005 Colin Farrell makes child porn Filmmakers of The New World have apparently re-shot scenes where Collin Farrell makes out with a 14-year old Q'Orianka Kilcher because it's making lawyers nervous that they might be making child porn."

I've been covering Q'Orianka's involvement in this project since the filming of this movie and this story was widely circulated in the press. You should be able to find over a dozen web sources to confirm it with little effort. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.227.51.198 (talkcontribs) 27 January 2006

I would actually dispute that. The Village Voice source - a tounge-in-cheek opinion piece - says some scenes were "reportedly" re-shot. Reported by whom?! Can we really rely on a report of a report without any direct quote from anyone involved? And I don't think I need to tell you that the Superficial saying something "apparently" happened is NOT a credible source. I want to remove the passage, as it smacks of tabloid gossip, but I think I will rather remove the cite note, put in a citation needed tag, and give people a chance to find a more reliable source. Goodness. "Child" "pornography". What a world where a 14-years-old teenager is called a "child" and a scene with a loving embrace "pornography"! And these same people call pedophiles sick ...
When you have definitions like that, no wonder if "kiddie porn" is everywhere! Even the Victorians were not as uptight! --Florian Blaschke (talk) 16:12, 12 June 2015 (UTC)Reply

Name edit

Is

Why does she use her mother's surname rather than her father's? And is her father named in the article? Badagnani 00:41, 24 September 2007 (UTC)Reply
Because her father left before she was born.

How do you know her father left before she was born? DOESNT SHE HAVE A YUNGER BROTHER THAT IS ALSO FROM THE SAME FATHER ? I think this is a bunch of lies just to fit in HOLLYWOOD. Her father is a very good friend of mine ,and I come from the same place where he is from Cuzco Peru . In Cuzco we all know the true story about wachan he is a very well known medicine man and he is .Qoriankas reall father . this is a shame that you treat your father in this way , and you proclaim that you stand for the indigenous people right !!!!!!!!! Only if your father knew about your biography . He would be very sad ,because we all know how much he loves you . you should reconsider this bio of yours and write the right story about your father there is to much controversy of you in all the interviews and what people can read about you in this page ,other ways you should just say that he is dead . it seems thats what you want because it seem you just need people to know that you are an Inca native at least thats what you father gave you just because of that you should be grateful already My name is KIke and I am a very well known musician ,at this time Im traveling in the USA and people often ask me if I know about the peruvian Pochahontas . and I proudly answer this is my best friends daughter. until some one ask me to take a look at your bio and this is a great surprise for me and all the native people in the andes . I hope your father finds out about this by him self, because this is a very sad news for any parent . GOOD LUCK GOLDEN EAGLE

Her work for human rights, indigenous rights, women's rights, should be mentioned in the article. Badagnani 03:33, 15 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Pronounciation edit

How is her name pronounced? I heard it as "Kew-Orianka" Pictureuploader (talk) 10:44, 25 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Orthography: move edit

This page should be moved to Q'orianka Kilcher, which can be done by an admin only. The apostrophy in Quechua stands for a glottal stop. Q'uri (Q'ori in AMLQ orthography) means "gold", anka means "eagle". The pronunciation is something like "Kawree ahnkah", but after the first "Q" breath is interrupted for a moment. -- PhJ (talk) 10:55, 30 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

That is how it is pronounced in the Peruvian highlands. How does she say it when she's buying a burger in Nebraska? Varlaam (talk) 23:55, 17 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
Is "KAW-ree AHN-kah" not pronounceable enough to English tongues? The uvular ejective (which is not even glottalised in all forms of Quechua) is the only real difficulty in the name, and replacing it with a plain "K" is the only simplification needed to make it manageable for English speakers. In fact "KAW-ree AHN-kah KIL-cher" is the way she pronounces her own name in this video. --Florian Blaschke (talk) 22:56, 12 June 2015 (UTC)Reply

Howard Zinn edit

Just a minor edit, but I removed the adjective "leftist" from the sentence about historian Howard Zinn. His political ideologies are not important to this article. He was a historian and he wrote the book which the documentary Ms. Kilcher performed in was based upon. --- Tezcatlipoca, Oct 29, 4:10pm —Preceding unsigned comment added by 12.145.63.2 (talk) 20:09, 29 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

Yes, by all means lets whitewash the fact that she is supporting a radical leftist. Lets just call him an historian. Thats the wikipedia way. Whitewash the biographies of people who support the right causes. Smear those who you disagree with regardless of facts.75.80.58.166 (talk) 07:34, 25 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

Hilarious. Zinn was no more leftist than George Orwell and millions of people who resisted both the Nazis and Leninists, nor was he further on the left than the Tea Party is on the right. To say nothing of the distinction between radicalism (which respects democracy and human rights) and extremism (which does not care for such trifles). But in the eyes of many Americans, presumably, trade unions are a "radical leftist" idea. The IP obviously wishes to "redwash" Zinn by insinuating he was a "dirty commie" who worshipped Stalin. Of course, to the IP, that's not a smear because to them, all "lefties" are the same, freedom-hating mini-Stalins, and because they are clearly so far on the right that everyone left of Obama is a rabid bomb-throwing lunatic extremist. See red-baiting. The IP just wants to "rightwash" history by pretending that all left-leaning people are immoral, antidemocratic communists. --Florian Blaschke (talk) 16:29, 12 June 2015 (UTC)Reply

Confusing wording edit

The section The New World says the film had mixed reviews, but then immediately says it got positive reviews. Which is it? 136.159.160.122 (talk) 22:18, 4 July 2019 (UTC)Reply
