Its demise occurred when all its major advertisers, primarily record companies who regularly bought full-page ads, suddenly stopped advertising and the group, most of them unpaid volunteers, could no longer pay their printing bill. In 1981, Angus MacKenzie published an article in the Columbia Journalism Review entitled "Sabotaging the Dissident Press," which explained what had happened back in 1969. MacKenzie stated that members of the U.S. government Intelligence community had visited the advertisers whose ads were supporting the underground newspapers nationwide and prevailed on them to stop advertising. The alternative press quickly shrank to a handful. The Observer's closure was one of many.
