Schoolboy Vandalism edit

What happened to the original "Panicker" article, on which many people had worked over a long time? It was not perfect, by any means, but conveyed more information about the modern and historical use of the name than the grandiose caste-based account by the sixteen-year-old known as "Manu rocks" who replaced it on 19/11/06. He has managed to erase the whole history of the article before substituting his own.

According to the new editor, Panickers were "greatly respected" "warriors" of the Nair caste, holding an "extremely respectable" position in society, as well as "aristocratic families" from the lower castes and other members of the "nobility" and Christian "commanders"

This romanticised tale has little to do with the situation in the past couple of centuries. Its defects are not remedied by the absurd conclusion that, "All these caste divisions are absent today and have no meaning." NRPanikker 07:59, 25 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

I was the administrator who deleted the article totally last week. After looking at the removed versions I have restored almost everything except those that Geekoshy pasted in from another website. Also I have reverted to the last version before the copied text. Kimchi.sg 08:19, 25 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Section deleted for redundancy edit

The section, 'English word' was repetition of info already covered in the main part of the article. 192.30.202.20 22:30, 30 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Rather more than that has been deleted. NRPanikker 01:32, 5 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

By "more than that", do you mean, within that section or something outside the section? Within the section, the 'more' that has been deleted was something in line with what you complained about in your your previous comment as the romanticized view. (Then there was also that part that tried to say Panciker is not one who panicks! That should not have been there at all.) Outside the section, there was only a slight change made to condense the lines at the beginning of the article. 192.30.202.20 15:49, 11 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Unilateral Change of Article Title edit

Dear Hijjins, Your third strike appears to be changing the Panicker article to Panikar, with the claim that the latter is the correct transliteration of the Malayalam name. As most people know, the spelling of names in English is idiosyncratic: there is no "correct" spelling even for native English names, let alone foreign names like this one. NRPanikker (talk) 18:07, 6 April 2008 (UTC)

That is true, but Panikar is closer to the original Malayalam than Panicker, especially the "ck" which is not the standard translation for "ka" or even "kka". The "er" is also incorrect since it is supposed to be "ar". The only problem is with the hard "n" sound, which can be shown as a either a double "nn" or the "n subscript dot" (as in Pāṇini). Transliteration is also Wikipedia policy http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Naming_conventions_%28people_of_India_and_Sri_Lanka%29#Naming_and_transliterationHijjins (talk) 07:01, 9 April 2008 (UTC)

If Wikipedia has a policy of transliterating foreign names, that must be "a custom more honoured in the breach than the observance." It would be a licence to vandalise for every opinionated ignoramus, of which we have not a few already. NRPanikker (talk) 13:36, 9 April 2008 (UTC)

stop this immature behaviour!!! edit

I don't know why some users are removing me addition of panicker genealogy??? please stop doing unconstructive edits. if it further continues I will contact an admin or a bureaucrat. Mathew102 (talk) 11:43, 9 September 2015 (UTC)Reply

The so-called "genealogy" was entirely unverified by a reliable source. It was also poorly written, devoid of context, and full of trivial assertions. It is also unclear what encyclopedic significance this one branch of the family has if any. Please read WP:VERIFY and WP:NOT. Furthermore, please refrain from shouting and threatening other editors, and discuss calmly. Voceditenore (talk) 12:59, 9 September 2015 (UTC)Reply
Mathew102 is now blocked as a self-admitted WP:SOCK of a blocked user. Any and all edits by them may be reverted at will. Beeblebrox (talk) 20:17, 9 September 2015 (UTC)Reply

Misuse of the article edit

@Mr.TinjuRaj: I edited the list in the article for the reasons I stated in my edit summaries, and you've restored the material that I removed. Wikipedia is neutral (see WP:NPOV) and has no interest, in any list of people, in indicating those people in the list who happen to be members of one arbitrary ethnic group, giving it undue weight. This is especially true in the absence of any sources to verify your designations: see WP:V. There is also no justification for inserting "Ms." in front of arbitrary members in the list: see WP:HONORIFIC. There is no reason for singling out Lalita Panicker for information beyond the basics of what she is, in comparison to the other people in the list. Unless you can justify any of these, taking Wikipedia's policies and guidelines into account, I'll be restoring my last version. Largoplazo (talk) 10:26, 24 April 2018 (UTC)Reply

@Mr.TinjuRaj: None of this responds to the objections that User:Utcursch and I have raised. Largoplazo (talk) 15:46, 26 April 2018 (UTC)Reply
Also, Mr.TinjuRaj: please do not add non-existent articles to the list; see Wikipedia:Write the article first. utcursch | talk 15:49, 26 April 2018 (UTC)Reply
In case this makes it more clear for you, this article is titled "Panicker", not "Panicker with special emphasis on which of them are Ezhava". Your behavior is like going to List of people with surname Smith and putting "Jew" after the names of all of the people listed who happen to be Jewish, or "White" after the names of all the white ones. Largoplazo (talk) 15:51, 26 April 2018 (UTC)Reply

Arbitrary Exclusions edit

I have modified the lead paragraph to remove the pretence that all Panikkers are Hindus and moreover members of a particular caste with aristocratic pretensions. Kerala is a country with a strong communist tradition and many of its residents disclaim all religious and caste affiliations. NRPanikker (talk) 10:49, 26 February 2019 (UTC)Reply

Delusions of Grandeur edit

I have removed the unreferenced claim that the Panicker name was equivalent to a knighthood. Centuries ago it was an honour, of sorts, and hereditary, as was almost everything in those times. To find anything equivalent in the British system of honours would be difficult: it may resemble "Esquire," which any male has been able to use instead of "Mr" since the 19th century but in earlier times represented a distinct rank in society. In modern times it might correspond to becoming a Member of the Order of the British Empire (M.B.E.), if that distinction was hereditary. It implies that some distant ancestor was a good chap, but not especially brave or pious. There are hundreds of Indian names like this, which had some specific meaning in a particular place centuries ago, but people nowadays can call themselves whatever they want.

This claim of being Knights and Captains at War looks absurd when coupled with an assertion of being "OBC." No doubt that is why someone keeps removing the expansion of the abbreviation. NRPanikker (talk) 01:52, 2 October 2019 (UTC)Reply

Edit war from nair sock puppets edit

Panicker edit

Semi-protection: High level of IP vandalism. Kalangot (talk) 09:44, 2 October 2019 (UTC)Reply

It is unfortunate that the caste-based communal strife that bedevils India has spilled over into Wikipedia. It seems that I am being accused of being a sockpuppet and a member of the Nair caste by a user who seems not to be registered here. Does he even know what a sock puppet is? As he is barely literate, I suspect not. I am editing under my own name, and have not removed any referenced information, but I have changed what does not correspond to the information in the reference itself. I note that currently the page has been taken back to a much earlier version, without the two most recent references. I will not respond to the caste accusation. I am going to leave this playground to the children. NRPanikker (talk) 12:47, 2 October 2019 (UTC)Reply
Postscript: I see that the complainant has himself been blocked for being a sock puppet. Never mind, a professional slasher has pushed the whole page back several years. NRPanikker (talk) 04:31, 1 January 2020 (UTC)Reply

Religious Censorship edit

I note that the list of notable people with this surname has had all the Christians removed, e.g. Raimundo Panikkar and Archbishop Mar Ivanios, who are notable enough to have their own articles here. NRPanikker (talk) 18:13, 18 July 2020 (UTC)Reply

This idiocy has progressed. The article now claims that Panicker is "an ethnic group belonging to the Hindu religion." Such bigotry may go down well with the Aryan Hordes but is foreign to Kerala. NRPanikker (talk) 18:31, 25 November 2020 (UTC)Reply

Revert edit

Restored the known stable October version to revert POV pushes and disruptive edits from the sock puppets who are now blocked and tagged also please make a reference to a reliable source on the content you provide for the betterment of this article.
