editThere is some talk about Rock Band references being unimportant. Most songs included in the game have references to the game in their article, so we should either remove all references or try to reference all the songs for continuity. I for one know personally have found out about a great deal about new artists and songs through the game, and I find the references helpful. But it should be decided one way or the other to either reference all the songs, or remove all references. Hardlined (talk) 17:10, 24 July 2008 (UTC)
Alternative rock
editSpin says it "hit #1 on the U.S. mainstream and alternative rock charts", which it did. Spin does not say it is a "mainstream rock" or "alternative rock" song.
Charting is not an independent reliable source saying the song is a particular genre. In this case, being on the "alternative rock" chart means the song was receiving fairly heavy airplay on radio stations that Billboard has classified as alternative or modern rock.
I understand that there is an impulse to say, "It's R.E.M., therefore it's alternative rock." That is not a good way to generate content for Wikipedia. The next impulse is to go looking for a source that says (or seems to say) it is what we want to say it is. That's not a good method either.
Wikipedia should summarize what independent reliable sources say about a topic, which may or may not match what individual editors would want to say about a topic. - SummerPhDv2.0 13:16, 20 February 2020 (UTC)
- SummerPhDv2.0, This is not an example of "It's R.E.M., therefore it's alternative" nor "I personally think it sounds alternative" but a third-party, reliable source. Note that hip hop songs appear on hip hop charts and country songs appear on country charts: these are perfectly valid ways of making claims about the genre or style of music. ―Justin (koavf)❤T☮C☺M☯ 13:25, 20 February 2020 (UTC)
- Rather than have this discussion several times across several articles, do you think having a post at WT:ALBUM and asking editors at WT:SONG would be useful? ―Justin (koavf)❤T☮C☺M☯ 13:26, 20 February 2020 (UTC)
- Per your suggestion, I have started a discussion at Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Songs#Genre_based_on_charts. - SummerPhDv2.0 14:03, 20 February 2020 (UTC)
