@Zoetropo: The page is inconsistent. The most common spelling of the count's name appears to be "Eudes", with "Odo" second and "Eozen" a very distant third. The accessible references provide no assistance. The standard treatment for rulers of Brittany in en-wiki appears to be to Anglicise the name (cf the navbox). Would you propose to change the names of certain Dukes of Brittany from Pierre (Pierre Mauclerc) to Peter? If you choose this path after the community agrees you would need to display the alternatives elsewhere at least once in the article so readers can track successfully to references, understand the "wiki' procedure you wish to follow, and understand that the different version are language and time differences. As to Pierre, I would change it because unlike Odo/Eudes, Pierre has become far more ubiquitous than its French origins But that is only a thought. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.167.61.200 (talk) 18:15, 8 January 2017 (UTC)Reply

@71.167.61.200: I wouldn't actively pursue renaming in other articles, but then I don't need to with respect to the Pierres: they already appear in en-wiki as Peter, viz Peter II, Duke of Brittany and Peter I, Duke of Brittany. This proposal is for internal article consistency, where the Odo is in the title and was originally used, but Eozen is used throughout (but not in accessible references); The "(Medieval Breton: Eudon Pentevr, Modern Breton: Eozen Penteur, French: Eudes/Éon de Penthièvre)" text would remain untouched. ^~Hydronium^~Hydroxide^~(Talk)~ 03:40, 11 January 2017 (UTC)Reply

This is a vexed question. The name "Eudon" occurring in 9th century legal documents is stated in a lexicon (http://www.wales.ac.uk/Resources/Documents/Research/BretonPatronymsBritishHeroicAge.pdf) to be "Eu" plus "Don" meaning "Good"+ "Natural-Gift", suggesting a derivation from Greek and Latin. Whereas the Frankish "Odo" means "possessor of wealth". Thus they are quite distinct names. Which of these names belongs to Odo of Bayeux is an interesting question as he had Breton connections, for instance his brother, then Viscount, Robert and he witnessed a charter by Eudon Penteur before he became bishop; moreover their father Herluin's Viscounty of Conteville is described in the French Wikipedia as follows: "The parish of Conteville was part of the exemption of Saint-Samson under the bishopric of Dol"; Herluin is also the name of an early 10th century Count of Ponthieu who sheltered the refugee monks of Landevennec abbey. I'm now inclined to use the early medieval name "Eudon" to distinguish the Count from the well-known Bishop. Zoetropo (talk) 06:34, 16 January 2017 (UTC)Reply
