Boundary

In a correction, an unknown user (66.32.236.129) wrote as an editing point: "(Corrected that it is the western boundary of Leon and Gadsen counties. Not Wakulla.)"

Gadsden County is not bounded on its west by the Ochlockonee River. The river runs on Gadsen's east seperating that county from Leon County. Also, Wakulla IS bounded on on the west by this river. 25px Noles1984

History

Could it be correct that Ft. Stansbury was ever on the Ochlockonee River? There are many references to that 1840s fort in a location perhaps 20 miles east of the river, and a few miles north of Wakulla Springs, but none I've ever seen for its first being on the Ochlockonee. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Serotino (talk • contribs) 16:59, 29 March 2009 (UTC)

Length

I've seen references for the length of the river of 125, 190, 260, and 300 miles. I've gone with the length given in the cited book, but I have to ask - what is the length of the Ochlockonee River?! - The Bushranger (talk) 21:49, 30 March 2010 (UTC)

I just did a calculation with GIS data and got 150.9 miles which could be sourced to the National Atlas ([1]), that does not include Ochlockonee Bay which would add another 6-7 miles. I'm ok with going with the book citation though. Kmusser (talk) 13:19, 31 March 2010 (UTC)

Well, the length given by the Water Resources Atlas of Florida, which should be "semi-official", is the one I've decided to go with, at least for now. - The Bushranger (talk) 15:10, 31 March 2010 (UTC)

Tidal Influence

"with tidal influences extending upstream 15 miles (24 km) from the river's mouth" This statement, though pulled from a reference, is not entirely accurate. Depending on discharge from Lake Talquin, the Ochlockonee regularly flows upstream at high tide as far inland as Roberts Landing (~23 river-miles from the mouth), and the river backs up at least as far inland as Mack Lake (~24 miles). To put it more accurately, the tidal influence extends perhaps 27-30 miles upstream.

Name: Ocklocknee or Ocklockonee?

In my travels around the watershed (I'm a hydrologist), I note that the bridges in Georgia spell it without the third "o", and the locals (Cairo & Thomasville) also pronounce it without the third "o", while in Florida, the signs add the "o" (I'm unsure how it's pronounced there).
