Current state of the plantation

There are now articles with maps showing locations of 5 NRHP-listed Oak Hill places in Virginia: Oak Hill (Annandale, Virginia), Oak Hill (Colonial Heights, Virginia), Oak Hill (Cumberland, Virginia), Oak Hill (Delaplane, Virginia), and this one, now "Oak Hill (James Monroe House)", all in northern or central Virginia. Oak Hill (plantation) → Oak Hill Plantation (Leesburg, Virginia) —
Oak Hill (plantation) → Oak Hill (Leesburg, Virginia) — There are four other places named "Oak Hill" in Virginia alone which are listed on the U.S. National Register, and I am pretty confident most or all of them are plantations or plantation houses. (For example, Oak Hill (Annandale, Virginia) is a Georgian house from 1790, and i am guessing that it was the main house of a plantation.) This Leesburg one is in fact named "Oak Hill Plantation" in its National Historic Landmark designation so i'd prefer for "Plantation" to be part of its name. There are more Oak Hills beyond Virginia listed in Oak Hill disambiguation page. While this place is not in Leesburg, proper, it is near there and Leesburg is identified as the "near to" location in the National Register and NHL designations. An alternative acceptable to me would be "Oak Hill Plantation (Loudon County, Virginia)" (or correct the county if i have that wrong). doncram (talk) 21:52, 4 October 2009 (UTC)

Okay, i just created stub articles for the other 4 Virginia NRHP-listed ones. I think all five are Georgian or Federal style buildings (with outbuildings too) built during the same era, 1773-1825. This Leesburg one is not obviously hugely more notable than the other ones, IMO. Are you wanting to make the argument that this one is? And even if it was more notable, I think the rename proposed would be an improvement. Just "Oak Hill" with parenthetical "(plantation)" doesn't work for me. doncram (talk) 00:44, 5 October 2009 (UTC)

if you're doing the work, i have no objection, but a national park service linked, connected to a president, seems more notable than other venerable buildings. • Oppose. This is not referred to as "Oak Hill Plantation" in any of the references or ext links, always as "Oak Hill". If "(plantation)" is no longer an adequate disambiguator, change to Oak Hill (James Monroe house) [2] or similar; that's more descriptive anyway. Station1 (talk) 00:20, 6 October 2009 (UTC)

Oh! I don't know why i had the strong impression that "Oak Hill Plantation" was the official NHL name; I was wrong. Oak Hill Plantation seems to have always been the bolded name in the article. The name in the National Register is "Oak Hill". The name in the NHL program is "Oak Hill (James Monroe House)". I prefer "Oak Hill (Leesburg, Virginia)" for the article name, to use our own form of disambiguation, consistent with other NRHP-listed places, rather than following the NHL program's disambiguating phrase. I collected NRHP documents for the place and added links into the article. Alternative titles used in those documents support using James Monroe name in the title, and do not support using "Plantation" or "Leesburg". It's also not actually in Leesburg, it's in unincorporated area 8 or 9 miles away, could be said to be in area of Ailie, an unincorporated community. Given this information, and no opposition here for Station1's suggestion, I think "Oak Hill (James Monroe House") is better, and am implementing the move, despite being involved in this discussion. If anyone strongly disagrees please feel free to re-open for more full discussion, but I think this should be okay.
