Nock authored more than 140 books and 1000 magazine articles, which are often considered to be less than authoritative because of his voluminous output.[by whom?] He tended to re-use data, text and anecdotes in different books, including paragraphs culled in their entirety (check similarities in "Steam Locomotive" 1957 & "British Steam Railways" 1962).[citation needed] Having said that, Nock's style is easily read and he explains engineering issues in layman's terms, making the subject more accessible. His continuation of E. L. Ahrons' work, continuing steam locomotive development from 1925, is much more friendly to the layman or armchair enthusiast than Ahrons' seminal work "The British Steam Railway Locomotive Volume 1 From 1825 to 1925".[according to whom?] If his work is treated as a general picture of railways in action, from the personal viewpoint of someone who was there and who interacted with railway personnel at various levels, both professionally and in his leisure time, his output is reasonably valid.[according to whom?] One of his most famous books was 'The Pocket Encyclopedia of British Steam Railways and Locomotives'

Got rewritten - I don't know which of his books are or are not notable - so if anyof this information should go back in, please do it.

However I don't have sources for much of the subjective comment, though his "readable" writing style is noted in the text under "legacy" as are his faults.

The books can be mostly found via the external link in the article - they are generally indexed in libraries (including on the net)- and so should be easy to find. Are there any "seminal" ones (that should be listed)? - (also see section above) - is anyone able to do some proper editorialising to create a list of his better works.?

More importantly the monographs on railway performance etc are not yet listed here - and with over 1000 this would be an obvious size issue - nevertheless the body of work is likely to be a useful source ..

Is there a list of his publications in The Engineer/The Railway Magazine that can be linked to - I really think we need a list .. Prof.Haddock (talk) 04:15, 19 January 2014 (UTC)
