Major Errors

edit

Can a moderator please read through the "Seven Network" & "Nine Network" page introductions?

They're absolutely incorrect and a dogs breakfast!

Someone is being bias towards a network.

(e.g.) "Nine won the 2016 ratings year" ... "Seven losing ground" etc.

Cringe-worthy. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Lukerox96 (talkcontribs) 15:20, 9 July 2017 (UTC)Reply

Ratings

edit

NBN currently advertise themselves as the highest rating television network --bacco007 12:01, 28 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

It is still the highest rating on a national scale (All cities except Perth it has rated high). Ch7 Won the first 3 Ratings Weeks and Drew the 4th. Since then Nine has won every single week of ratings. --Boochan 16:18, 14 July 2005 (UTC)Reply

Ah, alright then. Thanks for clarifying that. -- Daverocks 07:31, 31 July 2005 (UTC)Reply

Recent demise in ratings & related changes deserve some sort of comment - Should 'highest rating' be qualified as it would appear that Nine has lost this title for 06 --Stickyweb 07:53, 1 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Nine formally owned a stake in EMTV, Papua New Guinea's main television station -- Is this supposed to be "formerly"? --Paul 16:52, 24 November 2005 (UTC)Reply

Channel Nine is now the highest rated network in the 5 cap cities, somone should fix that in the first paragraph.
It's no longer true Nine is the highest rated network. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Qantasthetig (talkcontribs) 13:40, 21 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

POV statememt

edit

The opening sentence in the article begins: "The Nine Network is Australia's most well known and respected television network..."

This seems like a very POV statement. I am going to re-word it, hope there are no objections :) - Akamad 13:31, September 9, 2005 (UTC)

Hmmm, there has been some major editing by an anon in the last several minutes, it seems like the kind of thing that might get reverted (he/she deleted the history section for one thing). But I am not familiar with this article, so I myself won't be reverting, just in case the edits are valid (it's late and I'm tired and can't be bothered checking both versions of the article). And because of this, I didn't re-word the opening sentence :) - Akamad 13:37, September 9, 2005 (UTC)

The Missing History Section

History

edit

This is just plain wrong - the history provided is the history of the Channel 7 network136.153.2.2 08:05, 6 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

The network originated as an alliance of stations owned and operated by Fairfax (in Sydney) and the Herald & Weekly Times (in Melbourne).

I'd argue that the network did not originate until 1963 after Packer's Consolidated Press purchased a controlling interest in GTV9 [1] Prior to this there WAS no network. Any reference to HSV7 does not belong in a discussion of the Nine Network --Stickyweb 08:19, 1 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

The Melbourne station was sold to Fairfax following Murdoch's takeover of H&WT; Fairfax in turn relinquished ownership of the Sydney and Melbourne flagships through the disastrous privatisation by Warwick Fairfax Jr.

The buyer was the Qintex group, controlled by colourful entrepreneur Christopher Skase, a former Australian Financial Review journalist who had leveraged ownership of a small mining company to acquire specialist retail assets (eg the upmarket jeweller Hardy Bros) and then move into property development, notably the three Mirage resorts in Queensland and Hawaii.

Qintex already held a station in Brisbane; following acquisition of the Sydney and Melbourne flagships it purchased stations in other capital cities.

Qintex collapsed ingloriously after an unsuccessful takeover of MGM/UA, the Hollywood studio that has been recurrently bought and sold by Kirk Kerkorian.

Qintex never owned the Nine Network, it was sold to Alan Bond for $1billion and Packer bought it back for $250million --bacco007 12:04, 28 December 2005 (UTC)Reply
What we have here is the history of the 7 Network, not Nine Network. -- Evilio 16:22 1/10/06

Deleted Criticism Section

Criticism

edit

Due to the relatively small TV audience market in Australia, the three commercial stations (Seven, Nine and Ten) have often been criticised for their lack of respect for their audiences. Primetime programs are often rescheduled without warning so as to avoid competing with the popular programs on other channels. In such cases, stations will usually air old or 'poor' programs which have no likelyhood of ratings success. Also, at times when stations have successes such as CSI; programs may be used as a 'Golden Goose', re/scheduled when stations need a ratings success. Often programs and/or ideas become over-exposed.

New Nine Logo & Slogan

Can someone replace the logos on this page? At the moment all they're poor mocks. The Nine is out of shape, the fonts used on the news and sports logos is wrong.

The Nine logo in the infobox is actually according to the logo on PBL's site http://pbl.com.au/businesses/default.aspx. If anyone has the right font for WWOS and NEWS, make a better copy ~ Trisreed my talk my contribs 11:40, 14 July 2006 (UTC)Reply
Triseed, look at the proportions of the Nine logo. It looks poor the way the white gaps are different sizes and is unsuitable for use. It's unprofessional and is best if the a smaller size is used until a quality mock is created. Otherwise, dont use one at all. Bobbybigtop 16:41, 14 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Speaking of which, should the logo used in the ratings for last year and other previous years for Channel Nine be the old logo? Technally, the logo is an anachronism on those pages, but it may cause confusion to non-Australians if we do change it. ZanderSchubert 04:03, 12 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Removed Content

edit

The Below is removed, it contains POV please remove the POV and make the text fit an encyclopedia before re-adding.

This is also reflected with the poor treatment of cult television, including Farscape, which is strange, since Nine helped create it back in 1999, and as of 2006, not even a full season has aired. Any time it does, it is usually three in the morning.

Due to this habit of purchasing ALL of a season(or several seasons, sometimes a whole multiple season series) and using only a part at random, denying a constant stream of the show, the station is known by: Channel "Nein!" - denying a normal approach to programming, of all of a show, each week, in order. (It is also akin to the Soup Nazi from Seinfeld, who denies customers their order if they make any sudden moves he doesn't like.)

They either play just one, a massive clump and then nothing, play them out of order, or leaves massive gaps of time between episodes. It has done the same thing to:

   * Star Trek:The Next Generation
   * Star Trek:Deep Space Nine
   * Star Trek:Voyager
   * Babylon 5
   * [Justice League]

Among countless others.

Outrageous Fortune: they play it whenever they feel like it (Dec. 2007), and then say "coming up next, an all new episode of Outrageous Fortune." who is removing the history section?

edit

somebody keeps on removing the history section!

It is incorrect. It is that of the Seven Network. It needs to be rewritten therefore it has been removed. - Mike Beckham 04:49, 8 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

== Criticism Section ==I watched Revolution right through to the second last episode. As it came on too late for me I had to record it for later but when I attempted to play the last episode there was a message to say that it could be viewed later. Even though the TV guide in the magazine and the on TV screen guide gave it at the usual time they moved it without notice. I am afraid that I can no longer watch this channel while there so many other reliable channels to watch. In toowoomba if the weather is not perfect, Win is the first channel to lose signal. It can get so bad that we have you change channels which don't seem to have the same problems. Content has changed to fix POV problems. If you have a problem discuss it here. Do not just revert as you may break the No 3 Revert rule. Also see WP:NPOV. - Mike Beckham 10:11, 12 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

I take issue with the Criticism section being the first section of the page. This is an informative page about the Nine Network, and having it above information about Nine's actual broadcasting surely smacks of an imbalance of opinions. Can we move somewhere more appropriate on the page?

In addition, I detect a problem with the following passage under the Criticism heading:

Another example was during October 2006 when the highly popular 6th series of the HBO drama The Sopranos was moved from a 10.40pm Wednesday time slot to 12.05am on a Tuesday morning with virtually no warning. Typically such late programming generally means the episode will run late making recording on digital set-top boxes and VCR's almost impossible. As a display of further contempt for the Nine Audience Nine's Executive Len Downs was quoted on The Age Website (19th Oct') "We're not programming for VCR's". He says the late starts are often attributed to the station running additional evening newsbreaks when there is a lot of news around. "What I do at home is use a three-hour cassette," he says.

The extract (1) fails to mention the low ratings that The Sopranos has achieved, (2) demonstrates bias and lack of justification in the opinionated statement that Nine show "contempt" to viewers, and (3) appears to be motivated more by the author's personal viewing taste than the desire to be informative (i.e. the passage comes across as being written by a disgruntled fan of The Sopranos). Surely this should be heavily edited or deleted. Cyril Washbrook 12:42, 28 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Previously, there was this addition to the Criticism section:

Compared with their commercial network rivals, the Nine Network consistently has a large proportion of their viewers in the 50+ age demographic [3].

I fail to see how that's a criticism. Deleted, although can be reinstated if someone has a compelling argument for its retention. Cyril Washbrook 05:54, 7 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Affiliates? Part of the Network?

edit

I'm confused by this article. I was under the impression that "Nine Network" refers to those stations which take the Channel Nine branding (that is, Sydney/Melbourne/Brisbane/Adelaide/Perth/Darwin), and the rest (that aren't branded "Channel Nine") are counted as affiliates. Just because Perth and Adelaide's stations aren't owned by PBL doesn't mean they're mere affiliates of the Nine Network. They are a part of the Nine Network. - Mark 11:27, 25 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

You are exactly right. Since PBL doesn't even own Nine anymore, its even more justified to write in the other cities. It's a national network, thus should include affils. I've updated the infobox to include this. 203.206.104.225 17:05, 16 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Video Program Guide

edit

The VPG is basically a stop-gap measure in place of full 7-day program guide information; I think the assertion that it is a seperate channel is misleading. Seeing as it is effectively a datacast (akin to Digital 44) I suggest that the 'free to air channels ' section be removed/altered seeing as the Nine Guide isn't really a channel. timgraham 07:08, 22 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Southern Cross

I have removed the Southern Cross logo because, even though Channel Nine Adelaide is a Southern Cross station, it never uses the logo, name or ID of Southern Cross broadcasting. (I don’t think they even use the logo for NWS produced programmes.) ZanderSchubert 08:09, 18 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

The balls are back!

Just wondering if anyone noticed that during the 1 vs. 100 episode tonight (May 21), the Channel Nine promos featured a spinning Channel 9 Logo cube but on the side of the cube was the 9 dots! History Section

edit

May I please request that someone create a history section for this article. Thanks. Stickeylabel 23:56, 2 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

I have started it very pithily: there needs to be more info about shows, past ownership, its past popularity, and so on, but it is an OK start... Also, while we are on it, where is the press about NBN being integrated into Channel Nine proper? ZanderSchubert 10:10, 7 June 2007 (UTC)Reply
I have cleaned up the section, and removed uncited information. Information about NBN is still speculative, so it's best not to include it in the history section just yet. Stickeylabel 11:27, 7 June 2007 (UTC)Reply
May I again request that someone expands the history section to something as large as Seven Network#History or Network Ten#History? There is alot of history at the network, including the death of Kerry Packer. Thanks. Stickeylabel 23:37, 28 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

"Before its formation, TCN-9 was then affiliated with HSV-7 (due to the fact that they were both Australia's first television stations, having been opened in 1956[2])" - the reference cited does not actually state that the reason TCN-9 and HSV-7 were aligned is because they were first in their respective markets. As I understand it the affiliation arrangement was more due to the commercial rivalries between newspaper proprietors that owned the various channels. Andjb (talk) 07:02, 11 August 2012 (UTC)Reply

Channel Nine Availability

edit

In my opinion, this article is about the Channel Nine Network rather than the PBL corporation, and, as a result, should include NWS-9 Perth and STW-9 Adelaide. After all, people in Adelaide and Perth may not even be aware that they aren't covered by the Nine Network like the rest of the metro areas. I have added the info relevant to both "Availability" sections, but feel free to change it. ZanderSchubert 01:18, 27 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

I have reverted this as the Nine Network is for owned-and-operated stations only. STW and NWS are merely affiliates of whom use similar branding. Stickeylabel 05:27, 27 July 2007 (UTC)Reply
To say that the Nine Network is only for owned-and-operated defeats the idea of a network - they don't need to be owned by PBL. At the very least there should be mention of the fact that the stations in Adelaide and Perth are called Nine and known as such. It's fair enough that it needs to be an accurate article but moving STW and NWS away is just going to confuse people! It doesn't make much sense that the section doesn't include mention of any of the regional affiliates (NBN, WIN, Imparja, etc).timgraham 06:04, 27 July 2007 (UTC)Reply
That's a good point timgraham, I have now updated the availability to include mention of STW and NWS: Nine Network#Availability. Stickeylabel 10:31, 27 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Schedule

edit

Why is the Schedule Half Melbourne/ Half Sydney. Friday Nights is written for non-NRL states but Saturday is for NRL states. It's a bit messy - Mike Beckham 09:11, 19 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Perhaps it should the section should be split into two, a bit like at Prime Television.. timgraham 09:41, 19 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Wikipedia is not a directory. The schedule clearly states that "The above represents Nine's usual primetime schedule. It does not reflect one-off events, and program starting times may vary from those shown. For up-to-date information, see the Nine Network's online television guide.". The schedule should not be region specific, as Wikipedia is not an online television guide, users should instead visit the official television schedule for region specific information. The schedule is merely a method of ambiguously representing the genre break-up of the Nine Network's primetime schedule, and the shows that are broadcast on the Nine Network. Stickeylabel 09:56, 19 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Right. But that does not answer why its 1/2 Sydney and 1/2 Melbourne. Some consistency would be nice! - Mike Beckham 09:59, 19 September 2007 (UTC)Reply
The guide correctly reflects the Nine Sydney schedule. A Friday Night Movie (This week is Suddenly 30) is shown at 7:30pm in Sydney on Friday Nights, and Rugby League is shown on Saturdays. This is according to the Nine Network's official online television guide. Stickeylabel 10:07, 19 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Many Logos?

edit

The article says that Nine has had many logos, but it looks like nine has had two logos, used alternately.129.96.234.232 (talk) 03:10, 6 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

  • Two things: firstly, the logos changed subtly while still keeping the same basic shape (have a look here for an example) so it has had more than two logos, they just look very similar. Secondly, "X has had many logos" is the generic text that they always put in logo sections, and no-one has gotten around to reword it so it doesn't sound, well, stale and generic. Feel free to change it if you wish, but keep it simple: the logos should explain enough anyway by themselves. ZanderSchubert (talk) 00:45, 7 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

Future Programming

edit

Can I suggest this be cleaned up seeing as we have already entered the 2008 ratings season? The section suggests Nine's programming targets a younger audience but since the source was published (June 1, 2007) Nine have made little mention of said programming (except for 2 shows) and even on-sold one programme, Gossip Girl to Foxtel [5]. I keep seeing edits that Gossip Girl will later repeat on Nine but there isn't a reliable source to prove this [6]. I think this show should be removed from this article as it isn't even premiering on Nine and I think it's misleading.Bdenwinter (talk) 10:05, 26 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

logo changes

edit

Again, as with the Seven and SBS pages, where are the dates for those logo changes derived from? Who can say that the logo changed on 1 January 1970 or 1 January 1980 because I don't think it did. And also during much of the '80s even though Nine only used a "dot"-less in their idents, the official logo was still with the dots, as this was shown in the station's external marketing and was evident when watching parts of presentation from that period eg. program promos had the full dot logo, but the station Id didn't. Andjb (talk) 13:41, 25 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

I've been wondering that myself. Maybe based on http://www.austvhistory.com but I have no idea. Bidgee (talk) 14:05, 25 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

I have removed the specific dates from the "Logos" section, due to the incessant reversions going on. In future I will revert any additions of these dates that do not provide specific references to reliable sources to support those dates. - Mark 07:56, 21 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

The logo shown for "1977-1988" is not strictly correct. While Channel 9 used only the numerical "9" component in its station IDs, the network did continue to use the "dotted" 9 logo in other material, such as on-air promos and graphics, printed material such as advertising and office stationary, and other promotional material such as on fleet cars etc. (For reference, see [7], [8], [9], [10]) Andjb (talk) 02:52, 24 April 2010 (UTC)Reply

In 1984, Nine also varied the logo to include two sets of dots (one on each side of the "9") to promote its stereo signal but this logo was not long-lived. Andjb (talk) 17:20, 23 April 2010 (UTC)Reply

This article totally avoids mentioning any Packers - Frank, Kerry, Jamie... amazing! No Packers, no Channel 9! They created its whole culture. To Frank and Kerry, 9 was their pride and joy - and a monster money-maker. They were hands-on proprietors - read The Rise and Rise of Kerry Packer - and where is the One Day Cricket??? Could someone also please fix 'tacktless'? in Turnaround. Is it supposed to be 'tacky' + 'tactless' or what? (and what would tabloid journalism become if any tact were involved?'Bluedawe 22:49, 8 June 2010 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by Bluedawe (talkcontribs)

I'm guessing that someone from the station itself is writing this and doesnt want the station affiliated with the more shadier aspects of the packer family (relations with mr. netanyahu jr. etc). this is - indeed - a travesty since it adds color, especially were a whole chapter devoted to the graham kennedy affair vis-a-vis being dependant on what a phobe hates most.

I'm not familiar with this subject entirely, but there are far too many occasions where opinions are made on it versus Seven Network. Wikipedia isn't an opinion store, nor is it a battleground for network dominance. Phrases like "Nine loses to seven" and several related terms violate this policy. Request move

edit

I just wondered whether it would be worth requesting an article move from name: "Nine Network" to something like "Nine (Australian television network)". See Template:Requested move for options. Gregkaye (talk) 12:25, 2 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

Network ownership

edit

@Drewpalazzolo: I noticed you have re-added Stan as the owner of the Nine Network? I'm wondering what is your reasoning behind this? Stan is indeed a part of Nine Entertainment Company, but it is not the parent of the Nine Network; both Stan and the Nine Network are separate components of their parent NEC. It's shown on NEC's website, and this article by ABC News about the NEC-Fairfax merger states: "The new entity [created by the merge], which will simply be called "Nine", will own the free-to-air Nine Network [...] a majority stake in Domain, streaming service Stan and a 54.5 per cent stake in radio network Macquarie Media."Nick Mitchell 98 talk 02:36, 6 September 2019 (UTC)Reply

High quality article

Such brilliance...

Nine's other popular recurring sporting events include the State of Origin series, Gillette Twenty20 until Nine lost the rights in 2018, Gillette Series Cricket until Nine lost the rights in 2018, and Test cricket until Nine lost the rights in 2018. and formerly the Australian Swimming Championships until Nine lost the rights in 2009.

In 2014, Nine News website moved from its ninemsn website to a brand-only website become 9'snews.com.au, which are still in use to this day.

The Olympic news on Today and Nine News don't broadcast live streaming due to the IOC rights instead it replaces the message board until Olympic news finishes and returning to normal programming.

Definitely not indiscriminate aspie rubbish...

In 2013, the Nine Network switched their captioning provider from Red Bee Media to Ai-Media.

Language used in the history section

edit

The 'History' section of this article is still very POV and really feels as if it's being manicured by corporate/marking personnel within the network. I suggest that it should be made more objective. It stands out so starkly against typical factual Wikipedia writing. I am really not sure who it's trying to fool... --Kyerussell (talk) 07:41, 23 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

New station id format

edit

I find the recent station channel I d s design and current program I d showing are intrusive to the viewing experience. They are too large and too bright. They are distracting. Need to be reduced in size and brightness by at least 50%. Little point having a big screen with all these pop up advertising too. DJJBEN (talk) 09:08, 13 June 2023 (UTC)Reply

There is a special person on this show that is loved by all and specially by the people travelling on the cross country bus day tours she is the most kind hearted person you can find on this earth she has a heart of gold and looks after most people on those trips, it would be nice to largely represent her on your show, she deserves it by all means. I would say that every traveler and also other parties would say she is the best. Her name is Samantha C or Sam for short. I am just another 81 year old that travels a lot and seen her actions she deserves some accolade when possible, we all admire her certitude and services to us old. New logo?

edit

Does Nine have a new logo that replaces the 3D logo for consistency? Also please remove the spam and commentary from the talk page. Jordf32123 (talk) 05:01, 24 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

The promo logo is different to the bug logo which is being phased out. The new logo appears to be flat but with a slight gradient, and seems to taking a similar approach to Foxtel's de-gentrification. Jordf32123 (talk) 11:50, 12 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
