Talk:Nicholas Bagenal

Disambiguation edit

The original page stated that Nicholas Bagenal, the "Welsh Politician" was sourced from the DNB. However, there is no trace of Bagenal or Bagnal in the original 1885 publication, vol 2 page 398 . In the 1901 DNB an entry was written by A. F. Pollard, on the soldier and Marshal of the Army on Ireland - not the Welsh politician. In the Concise DNB of 1992 (vol 1, p110) , again the entry for Nicholas Bagenal is the soldier who died in 1590.

In the revised ODNB an article on Bagenal appears, again as 'soldier';

The statement that Bagenal (1509-1590) was Custos Rotulorum of Anglesey between 1689–1690 cannot be correct, a hundred years after his death. Similarly the linked article stating that he was MP for Ynys Môn (UK Parliament constituency) in 1661 must also refer to another Nicholas Bagenal.

See also the genealogical information at the Peerage website, and at the Bagnall Village site.

Two articles are therefore needed:-

  • Nicholas Bagenal (d. 1590), the soldier and marshal of the army in Ireland; and
  • Nicholas Bagenal (fl 1660-1690) the Welsh politician.

Thanks for pointing this out. I have used DNB text to expand the article. Charles Matthews (talk) 08:30, 17 April 2011 (UTC)Reply
Do you have access to the History of Parliament text which should carry the biographical article on the Welsh politician, so we can create the page for the Ynys Mon MP? Honyng (talk) 08:58, 17 April 2011 (UTC)Reply
There is enough for a stub here; NB that the constituency changed its name from Anglesey only in the 1980s. More here. Charles Matthews (talk) 09:34, 17 April 2011 (UTC)Reply
