previous positions edit

previous positions held reads like a resume for Navin Chawla. Being an encyclopedia does not mean unnecessary details should be included. If some one is interested in summarising the section, fine by me. I will delete the entire section after 1 week. Please let me know if someone wants to challenge this. thank you. Kc27 (talk) 23:21, 2 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

Go ahead and delete it. It sure looks like a resume. Maybe a one line inclusion about his career path can be done for eg. "he worked as a bureaucrat for the governments of various states and union territories".--Sodabottle (talk) 14:24, 4 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

The whole purpose of a biographical profile is to have all details in place. I have only recently come across this entry and do not agree that the entire details have been deleted. While I agree that it should not read as a CV, it needs to be expanded. I will be making an attempt in the next few days. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Vermakk (talkcontribs) 11:02, 2 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

I completely agree that what Mr.Chawla accomplished through his long service in IAS needs a mention. I did not have the interest to go through the CV that was in place then. If you want to add his previous positions section keeping wiki style in mind and with proper refereneces you are welcome to do so at your leisure. Kc27 (talk) 02:32, 3 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

revisions by vermakk edit

I noticed that there was a massive deletion of article's content by user vermakk. This was data referenced from reputable sources. Therefore I am reverting the article to its original state before deletions. If the user wants a discussion about the matter, please go ahead and start one here. Kc27 (talk) 00:47, 3 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

Please do not start again by deleting any content. Challenge any sources in the discussion forum and we can work on it. Restoring to the original content can be a pain and I will appreciate it if deletions are discussed prior to any action. Kc27 (talk) 02:29, 3 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

REGARDING ARTICLE - NAVIN CHAWLA edit

Initial Comments The Wikipedia Guidelines for Biographies of living persons (BLPs) are very clear - "Biographies of living persons (BLPs) must be written conservatively and with regard for the subject's privacy. Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, not a tabloid: it is not our job to be sensationalist, or to be the primary vehicle for the spread of titillating claims about people's lives, and the possibility of harm to living subjects must always be considered when exercising editorial judgment." The guidelines also give clear indications as under: Avoid gossip and feedback loops "....be wary of feedback loops, in which material in a Wikipedia article gets picked up by a source, which is later cited in the Wikipedia article to support the original edit." Misuse of primary sources "Exercise caution in using primary sources. Do not use trial transcripts, other court records, or other public documents to support assertions about a living person, unless a reliable secondary source has published the material." COMMENTS REGARDING ENTRY Initial Paras "Navin Chawla (born 30 July 1945, New Delhi) is a controversial Indian bureaucrat (References 1 & 2)." COMMENTS The first reference relates to land allotment at Jaipur. The second reference relates to the NDA representation against Chawla. The NDA representation and the controversies regarding the land allotment have both been dealt with in great detail in the section "Controversies and Political Opposition". There no need for this duplication and needs to be deleted. At the most these references 1 & 2 can be moved into the "Controversies and Political Opposition" section. "Best known for his pro-Sanjay Gandhi actions as Secretary to Lieutenant Governor of Delhi during Indian Emergency (References 3,4,5 & 6)." COMMENTS Reference 3 relates to the NDA/BJP representation against Chawla. Reference 4 is an article by Kuldip Nayar with an unsourced quote from the Shah Commission. There is no reference to Navin Chawla. Reference 5 is an article by Swapan Dasgupta regarding the Emergency and the Shah Commission. There is a reference to Navin Chawla even though there is no quote. Reference 6 is an article by Khushwant Singh about the Emergency with a reference to Navin Chawla. All these references relate to the Emergency and do not contain any direct reference or quotation about Navin Chawla. In any case the role of Navin Chawla during the emergency has been adequately and comprehensively outlined in the "Controversies and Political Opposition" section, hence this is just a duplication and needs to be deleted. At the most the references can be moved to the "Controversies and Political Opposition" section. "The Shah Commission, an independent commission headed by former Chief Justice of India, J.C. Shah and charged with inquiring into atrocities during emergency period, commented in its final report that Navin Chawla is "unfit to hold any public office which demands an attitude of fair play and consideration for others." (References 8,9,10,11 and 12)." COMMENTS Reference 8 is an article by A. Surya Prakash in which he quotes the Shah Commission Report regarding Chawla. Reference 9 is an article by B.S. Raghavan in which he mentions the emergency and Chawla and also the land allotment case. Reference 10 is an article of A. Surya Prakash which is practically a copy of reference 8 with an unsourced quote from the Shah Commission regarding Chawla. Reference 11 is an article which mentions the Shah Commission's comments and Chawla. Reference 12 is a news report regarding BJP raising the Chawla as Election Commissioner issue in Parliament. These references all deal with unsourced quotes of the Shah Commission regarding Navin Chawla. In any case the role of Chawla during the Emergency and the Shah Commission have been dealt with adequately in the "Controversies and Political Opposition" section. This is just duplication which needs to be deleted. At the most these references can be moved into the Controversies and Political Opposition Section. All your comments are about duplication of information in the first paragraph. By wiki standards, best known information about a person or a place has to be included in the first paragraph. By your own admission, Navin Chawla has been a controversial figure in Indian politics and this information is vital in this article. Also, Navin Chawla is more famous as an emergency figure than as an election commissioner. This has been confirmed from various sources as detailed in the article. These sources are reputable journalists and newspapers- Suryaprakash, Raghavan, Kushwant Singh, Indian Express, Hindu etc. Comments about Navin Chawla by Shaw Commission have been widely quoted in the print media and show the ability or characteristic of the person in regard to his actions during emergency. Agreed that these actions date back to 1977, but still these were the most important facts in Chawla's life and I believe that, by wiki standards, they have to be included in the first paragraph. If you want sources of what is published by these people or companies, it's beyond the scope of Wikipedia and I don't think this is the right channel to fight. I do not agree with your view that all information in the first paragraph needs to deleted. Kc27 (talk) 14:09, 5 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

I do not agree with your contention. Even you say "these actions date back to 1977". I will soon be attempting a revision keeping your reservations in mind. I will only be changing the order of the information and will not make any deletions. I will also retain each of the References already there. Vermakk (talk) 12:37, 17 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

Yes, the actions date back to 1977, but still they are the most important facts in the life and career of Navin Chawla. I do not understand what kind of order you want to change except to relegate these important facts to a corner of the article. Anyway, feel free to post the changes and we can work on it. You can also contribute to other sections {as you wanted about previous positions} to make this article better. cheers!!! Kc27 (talk) 18:23, 17 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

Shah Commission edit

As Shah commission's remarks about Navin Chawla have been widely quoted in Indian media since they were made(spanning three decades now), I included them in the introduction to Chawla's article. It also seems fair to me to include any criticism of the Shah commission itself and its fate as decided by the congress government later on. I cannot find a reliable source of what happened to Shah commission and its findings. Most literature simply suggests that it was buried by the later congress governments. Some news reports suggest that its powers and legality were curbed by court decisions. http://www.indianexpress.com/ie/daily/20000704/ina04002.html If all information is included here, it will be cumbersome and also non-relevant. Therefore, if any one can summarize Shah commission's fate in succinct sentences, with proper reference, of course, it would be a great help. Thank you.Kc27 (talk) 20:50, 18 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

"Controversial" in BLP edit

Should the "controversial" adjective be a part of the first sentence in the lead? Discussions in some other pages (like Talk:Narendra Modi#POV Lead Section) seem to indicate that in BLPs such references should be delegated further down the article. Should it really be at the top?
