NHA?

edit

Did the NHA play outdoor games? If so, some coverage in the history section would be good, as it would provide background, as the immediate predecessor league to the NHL. -- 65.94.78.9 (talk) 13:30, 11 December 2013 (UTC)Reply

Possible, but pretty unlikely. All of the teams were playing in indoor arenas by that time, albeit on natural ice. Resolute 14:43, 11 December 2013 (UTC)Reply

Statistics

edit

I believe this edit gives undue weight to the statistical performance of players in outdoor games, and so should be reverted. What does everyone think? isaacl (talk) 06:04, 3 January 2014 (UTC)Reply

Agreed. It might well be worth writing a prose section of notable performances - i.e. Kiprusoff with the first shut out, Crosby's shootout goal, Zetterberg with four assists, etc., but a full statistical section is likely to balloon out of control in a real hurry. There is also a sampling bias since nobody has played more than two such games. Resolute 15:36, 3 January 2014 (UTC)Reply
Aside - Ty Conklin has played three! But seriously, that's an enormous chart that really amounts to a whole bunch of zeroes. Agreed that notable highlights are worth covering in prose. Even after the other 5 outdoor games this year - which would give such a chart a whole bunch MORE zeroes - it would be simple enough to say that so-and-so has the most goals / assists / points all time outdoors, rather than post the entire stats chart. Personally I think that type of information is better covered on dedicated hockey reference sites, but I appreciate there are many who like a bit of trivia to add colour to the article. isaacl (talk) 16:45, 3 January 2014 (UTC)Reply
I don't think that is trivia really. I mean the highlights and notable statistics. I wouldn't put the whole list. -DJSasso (talk) 16:55, 3 January 2014 (UTC)Reply
Given the small sample size and uneven participation opportunities, I do believe that leading in goals / assists / points is not a sufficiently significant indication of a player's skill during outdoor play, and so an item of undue weight in this article (it may be more relevant in the player's article). Nonetheless, I appreciate that some would like to see this information in the article. isaacl (talk) 17:24, 3 January 2014 (UTC)Reply
I don't think merely presenting it is an inference of skill, any more than someone scoring on their first ever shot or a goalie winning their first ever game. But due to the event's relative rarity it is still noteworthy beyond trivia, IMHO. Echoedmyron (talk) 17:47, 3 January 2014 (UTC)Reply
The specific example I was referring to in response to DJSasso was leading in various statistics, and not scoring a first goal and so forth. I don't believe in this case that rarity is an issue. isaacl (talk) 20:30, 3 January 2014 (UTC)Reply
I didn't actually say leading statistics. I meant things more like there is only one player who has played in 3 games. Or Kipper being the first shutout etc. These are the kinds of details that flesh out prose in such articles. -DJSasso (talk) 13:13, 5 January 2014 (UTC)Reply

Alumni games

edit

The alumni games should receive better coverage on this page and in the articles since it has become customary to hold these alumni games. Not every game is chronicled in the respective article, the best ones seems to be the Rangers/Flyers and Toronto/Detroit alumni games with full rosters and summary. There probably should also be a table here just for alumni games with dates and scores. Jmj713 (talk) 13:23, 28 February 2016 (UTC)Reply

Non-NHL (neutral site) market?

edit

What defines a non-NHL (neutral site) market? The Hosting statistics section states, "*No non-NHL (neutral site) market has yet hosted a regular season outdoor game." It was recently updated to add, "Notre Dame, Indiana will be the first non-NHL market to host an outdoor game when it hosts the 2019 Winter Classic." The 2019 NHL Winter Classic page notes that this is "95 miles (153 km) from the ostensible home team's base in Chicago". The 2014 NHL Winter Classic was played about 45 miles (72 km) from home; the 2018 NHL Stadium Series game will be played about 30 miles (48 km) from home. So what's a neutral site? -- Pemilligan (talk) 18:53, 1 January 2018 (UTC)Reply

tahoe games?

edit

someone pls explain to me -- if the tahoe games are intended "to compensate for the postponed winter classic and stadium series", why don't they just invite the 3 teams slated for THOSE?! it seems like insult to injury for the wild, blues and hurricanes to be told "maybe next year" while bringing in 4 NEW TEAMS!!!!

what gives? 66.30.47.138 (talk) 03:57, 2 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

would the person who deleted all this pls restore it! espn, reuters, fox news, etc all have the story.
thanks for restoring the info, but again, why weren't the ORIGINAL TEAMS invited first? or WERE they, but declined for w/e reason?
needs a quick mention in that section. 66.30.47.138 (talk) 07:27, 12 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

"mystery alaska experiment"

edit

the source in question is not actually calling the tahoe games that -- he is jokingly comparing them to the fictional town in an old movie.

i have changed the entries to "tahoe games". that can serve as a placeholder until we have an official name. 66.30.47.138 (talk) 23:47, 2 January 2021 (UTC)Reply
