Re: Murphy bed

I'm not citing, in the formal sense, pre-WWII comedies, but I am saying that the repeated use of Murphy beds as a prop in comedies - for over one hundred years now - probably contributed to a (perhaps cartoonish) perception of Murphy beds as potentially dangerous. It's something of a trope, which is why the article talks about their repeated use in film, and it's filled out by the fact that, on several occasions, news agencies have reported on actual accidents involving Murphy beds. The fact that most of the comedies are pre-WWII is immaterial; merely being old is not reason to disregard something. That, to my mind, makes it worthy of note - with a short couple of sentences; we're not talking about several paragraphs, here. Many things are dangerous when dropped (some are not; if you drop a penny on my head from an airplane, I will not die), but certain of those things show up repeatedly in fictional works, to the point where it's noteworthy. For instance, I'd think it rather irresponsible if we didn't include some mention of Wile E. Coyote in our coverage of anvils. (I don't know whether and how much coverage it gets at the moment, but I definitely believe it would be a glaring lack if we said nothing at all.) Chubbles (talk) 02:03, 3 February 2015 (UTC)

Re: St. John's IceCaps

Like the team that's taking up this identity, the Hamilton Bulldogs, the IceCaps will have two consecutive franchises taking up their identity in the same league. Since the Bulldogs' timeline lists both franchises as part of team history (AHL at least), I figured it would be apropos for the IceCaps to do the same thing. I hope you understand. I was trying to find examples, and it hadn't occurred to me that Hamilton fit the bill themselves. It does seem odd, though, to have this shared history, as typically articles stick with the single franchise. For example, neither the article for the current Winnipeg Jets nor the article for the previous version of the same name lists the other franchise in its infobox, so that's what I was thinking of. It's more about there being a franchise with the name in consecutive seasons than anything else...after the first Bulldogs franchise moved to Toronto, the former Quebec Citadelles took up that name (however, I will probably create a new article for the Bulldogs' OHL team, as they're in a different league and a different style of hockey). Hope you don't mind if I jump in here but this could go either way, though I would lean towards keeping it as one team for the time being and split latter if there is enough of a management difference. Hamilton is actually a special case where for one season it was two merged franchises and editors at the time objected to splitting them. In the end the newer franchise stayed and the one owned by Edmonton moved but left the 'team history behind. Because of the temporary merger much of the staff and players stayed through the transition. Other examples of multiple franchises - same name are the Maine Mariners of the AHL and the Fort Wayne Komets currently in the ECHL. Each is a different case but mostly those two are together because there wasn't really enough info to keep separate pages for each franchise. In the end it will probably come down to whether the AHL and fans want it to be the same team regardless of business with franchise histories and affiliations. I was referencing the citation that is actually on the end of that sentence: [1]. I will say that other references don't make the same distinction, however. Regarding the HHOF thing, I brought it up at the Ice Hockey wikiproject page here, and the reasoning I heard is largely couched in the fact that people will probably continue to add the info in, even if we remove or rephrase the addition about being an announcement and not yet an actual induction. As others noted, it's highly unlikely that any of the elected people will have their inductions cancelled, so I'm good with that. But that wikiproject talk page is a good venue should you ever have other questions or concerns about how certain things get done on hockey-related articles. I just find it interesting that there was a consensus in the past about adding people only after HOF induction, but suddenly that consensus is gone and people are doing what they want. I don't have a problem with hockey-related things. Whip It!

The point of adding that disambiguation was not because someone would confuse the song with the film, it's because the page "Whip It!" redirects to the film page. I don't think there are five notable songs with the exclamation mark in the title that would need to be added as "see also"s. It wasn't a see also template anyway. If your issue is that Whip It! redirects to the film page, change that redirect; since the only actual use of Whip It with an exclamation point is the song you linked to, I don't see why usage with an exclamation point should redirect to the film's entry in the first place. My edit summary did reference your edit as having been Good Faith, and if you thought that in the brevity allowed in edit summaries I was being sarcastic, that's your issue, not mine. Fact is, when you enter "Whip It" in the wikipedia search bar, you are given 7 suggestions: the film, this disamb page (which doesn't include the article you linked to) [2], songs by Devo, Nicki Minaj and yes, the one you linked to among other things. So picking just one item to include in the hatnote seemed odd, especially since no other article using this term includes that punctuation. To be fair, no, I suppose "5 songs" was an exaggeration, but I hadn't previously taken the time to count. If you looked at the edit history on the film's article you would see that the edit reverts by me are largely for overlinking, copyright vios, crazy excessive detail and in one case edits by someone who was subsequently blocked for their editing behavior. It certainly is. And as the article was just created by another editor this afternoon, and that new editor is currently adding secondary sources in good faith as they were asked to do, it sure seems disingenuous to nom it so promptly. Just because an article has primary sources doesn't make it useless or solely promotional, especially if it has more than primary sources. Hi! It seems we disagree on Boston Derby Dames Rankings in 2006, 2007, & 2008 as it related to WFTDA standings. In 2006, 2007, & 2008 leagues were ranked both Nationally and by Region. Please see titles of cited materials that state "National" rankings. You changed to be as "East", but this would be incorrect. Though they are considered an east coast team, the rankings cited were the National Rankings listings, so I have again changed those back to "WFTDA" rankings. Hi! I noticed you went back with new citations which I had not seen before, that's totally cool, and I will leave them as such. One thing though, is that the wikilink next to those numbers, the visible text now reads WFTDA, but it directs to the East Region article. So - if these are actually an overall WFTDA ranking, that designation in the table should link then to the WFTDA article (or possibly the Women's Flat Track Derby Association Rankings article instead). I was a founding member of Boston Roller Derby and also a founding WFTDA member. I skated with them for 7 years so I know the history well. Like you said, it's hard to find anything from WFTDA stating early rankings, so I did my best with other articles for reference. Just wanted to make sure people understood that WFTDA did start out with National Rankings, moved to regional, then to international. I announce in Toronto, and also was in Omaha on the broadcast at D1 this year, was wondering if we'd crossed paths. I have made those edits I was suggesting to how the links were working - directing the first 3 years to the rankings article. If you have a WFTDA background, the main WFTDA article needs some work; I have worked on it periodically, but again the early years it's hard to find suitable links sometimes. Capitals-Penguins rivalry link

Hey Echoedmyron, I created the page for the Caps-Pens rivalry, and for some reason, if the first "r" in "rivalry" is lowercase, it redirects to National Hockey League rivalries. If that same "r" is capitalized, it goes directly to the new page I created. Until "Capitals-Penguins rivalry" becomes no longer a redirect link, I think it's better to leave the link as "Capitals-Penguins Rivalry." I tried changing the name to make the first "r" lowercase, but wiki said I couldn't make the change. Apologies, I hadn't realized that was a link and mistook it at first glance for a heading. I've undone my edit as a result. As for getting the redirects fixed so that the article may be renamed, that could be tricky, as it seems there are a ton of existing redirects due to various hyphen formats etc. May need an admin (or at least someone more experienced at undoing redirects and article moves than I) to untangle it. Hello. Retired in 1974 or 1975 ? Not sure the ref #4 (www.apsleyvoice.com) is right (1975) : according to the ref #5 (www.hhof.com) it's late 1974 (and it's in WHA not NHL). Fair point, I hadn't noticed that the HHOF ref contradicts itself. Considering that he played for the Vancouver Blazers in 1974-75, and he signed with them as a free agent in March 1975 (per ref #5, bottom of the entry under "Career") it would seem that they erred when saying 1974 in the bio. Also considering that he played 50 games for the Michigan/Baltimore franchise, and then 10 games for Vancouver that season (backed up by Hockey Reference and Elite Prospects as well, although I didn't link to them), "late 1974" would be an impossibility I would think. Yes. (I didn't notice he signed in March 1975) I was wondering when had started and finished the WHA season. For me too, it seems impossible that he played 70 games before the end of 1974. If you have alternate information, you should probably bring that to the article talk page to discuss the details with other editors. On the talk page, there's a search function where you may search the talk page archives for previous discussion about his ashes to see if a prior consensus was reached. Roller derby bis

Thank you for thanking me! and for your recent post-edit; as in your previous revert, I am merely a casual fan doing copy-editing, while you actually know something about the sport and its history.

My two local teams seem to be dormant for the school year, and during the summer, they spent as much effort touting themselves for community service as they did as a sport. In the three bouts I attended, the ethos of "play everyone" seems to dominate over "win games," as we have a couple of great jammers but occasionally play jammers who have a lot of trouble staying on their skates. Another astonishing thing about researching and copy-editing the section on strategies is that we never seem to use them, though some of the visiting teams do. Indeed - for some teams strategies and competitiveness are secondary for sure. The game has evolved a lot in its relatively short modern history, and sometimes the strategies employed by higher-level teams take a while to trickle down to the local level. My league has appeared at WFTDA Playoffs in the past but after a couple of rebuilding years just missed the post-season cutoff this season. I'm heading to my fourth WFTDA Championships next month, where no doubt I'll see some new strategy that blows everyone's minds - and then we'll see it locally in a couple of seasons down the line. Well, yes - Herostratus does in fact say towards the end "But it's OK if you don't; I'm not going to change it. I believe in letting the person who (after all) did the actual writing work be given a kind of stare decisis privilege in minor matter like this." I only bring that up as the "American former" (or "retired", in this case) phrasing had been in the Kurvers article since at least 2013 (I didn't look back further than that to see when it appeared) and when you did the larger (and quite useful overall) edits that was something that got altered.

I'm personally firmly in the nationality-status-occupation camp, as were many of the others in that thread. I mean, Herostratus basically posits that to them - using the text attributed to Forsyth - "[player name] "....is a legendary American hockey player" (sounds OK) versus "...is an American legendary hockey player" (sounds stilted).", to which I disagree, especially in the context of describing former players, which is what we're doing here. Now, if only there was agreement as to whether the word "former" or "retired" could be agreed as the go-to term, that I could really get behind! Echoedmyron (talk) 23:05, 27 November 2018 (UTC)

Montreal Canadiens

I think you are misunderstanding my point on Montreal Canadiens. My objection is only with the "s" in Stanley Cups. I am perfectly happy with "Stanley Cup championships" or "Stanley Cup titles" as it does not pluralize a singular noun like "Stanley Cup". I've changed the wording to sound less clunky. Instead of "won the Stanley Cup 24 times" it is now "won 24 Stanley Cup championships" as is the case on the other team articles I was referring to. Hi there, do you remember making this edit on the Tenerife Airport Disaster article a few weeks ago? I thought it should say "was the deadliest accident", but you reverted and I came round to your way of thinking. Now I have made the same change ("was" to "is") in the World War II article and someone has immediately reverted me. Please see Talk — feel free to comment there if you want to fight my battle for me. I wonder, is there some guidance on this anywhere, in the MOS or some other tome of English grammar & style that we could use to back up our argument? The edit about Martin Brodeur is factually accurate, it should not have been deleted and it needs to be noted that it's never been addressed. The behavior subsequently stopped, so presumably the message was received. Now, since you don't use an account, there is the possibility someone else with your IP address did those edits, so you could always follow the links that were left on your talk page and create an account and edit productively. Larry Herndon

You swapped out the photo I inserted in the Larry Herndon article. As part of the WP:BRD process, I would like to discuss your revert. On Wikipedia, we prefer images that (a) focus on the person's face, and (b) are from the time period of greatest significance. In this case, the photo I added fulfills both off those objectives -- it focuses on the face and is from his time as a MLB player. Your preferred image is a blurry full-body shot in which Herndon's face is not even recognizable and which also dates from well outside the period of Herndon's significance. Care to explain? For ease of reference, both images are included here:

The image you used, the low resolution crop from a low quality Hostess card from the 70s, is blurry, far blurrier than the existing image. It has poor contrast as well. (Hostess card images are notoriously poor, and it always confuses me that they are eligible for use on wikipedia.) For some reason it also makes it appear as though his eyes are pointed in very different directions, and while the point of a wikipedia image is not necessarily to be flattering it's pretty bad - and to me, makes him unrecognizable. The image may give prominence to his face and be from his time as a player, but that doesn't make it superior to the full body shot of him as a coach in my eyes. Hello, I've just been looking into your revert of my edit on this article. My edit was simply based on the phrasing of the existing sentence, which still does not read clearly with the "and remains" clause. After reviewing the data however I think we're both wrong. My reading of the chart at Aviation Safety results in this ranking of most lethal United Airlines incidents:

It's possible I missed something, as the chart does not indicate multi-plane incidents nor include the total fatalities of such so I had to look into them individually. But if this is everything, the 1989 incident therefor was:

- the third most deadly of all UA incidents at the time, 
- the most deadly single-aircraft UA incident at the time,
- currently the 4th-most deadly of all UA incidents, 
- currently 2nd-most out of single plane UA incidents.

It would remain most deadly single plane incident only if you consider the Sep 11th attack a multi-plane incident, which I think is wrong: while the hijackings were coordinated, there was no interaction between the three involved planes. This agrees with how they are treated in the aviation-safety.net source.

If these facts are all correct, then we need to consider the existing notability discussion (Proposed trivia) on the talk page, which would suggest only the "most deadly single-aircraft UA incident at the time", and perhaps "currently 2nd-most" as the prior position is already being mentioned, are notable enough to

Your investigation here is impressive, however you are barking up the wrong tree. The sentence in question says "it was the deadliest single-aircraft accident". Terrorist attacks such as 9/11 are by definition not accidents, as they are intentional acts. Echoedmyron (talk) 00:07, 29 October 2023 (UTC)
